What finishing product and steps are you using?
@cursed_to_toil4 ай бұрын
@@walterkonrad3054 for this, I only sanded and it to 600 and then I just used a wood paste wax for lowes. Wood with good Chatoyancy doesn’t need much to become very brilliant

I like what you are doing with your inserts. I have done some using mother of pearl. Also I have turned a lot of Bog Oak but prefer it to show it's age and little fissures rather than covering everything with shiny CA. To each their own.
@cursed_to_toil4 ай бұрын
@@alanmorrison7076 you sort of need the CA finish in order to have the inlay do it’s thing properly, otherwise there’s a lot of inconsistencies throughout the pen and it takes away from the wood and the inlay. I also like the natural feel of the wood but once you get into some extensive inlay work, the CA finish becomes incredibly vital to the durability and overall look of the pen.
@cursed_to_toil4 ай бұрын
I’ll add to that, the Bog Oak is obviously just as porous and open grained as regular oak and putting a CA finish almost ALWAYS results in greyish imperfections throughout the pen due to the grain pores. I have done quite a lot of work into learning how to apply the finish so that it results in a pure black finish with beautiful grain on closer inspection. Had I not done that work, I’d never work with bog oak and inlay together because the end product is not sufficient in my opinion. I’ve tossed many bog oak pens because the finish was imperfect. It’s been incredibly frustrating but also motivating to try different things until I got it down. Most tighter grain woods and burls still have a smooth glassy finish with a proper application of the friction polish or the wax and so I opt into CA because it is less work for what I’m doing. I have a pointing wand I did with a friction polish and inlay that was really cool!
@alanmorrison70764 ай бұрын
@@cursed_to_toil Thanks for your replies. I understand your comments regarding CA lodging in the fissures of Bog Oak. Not too sure what you mean about needing to use CA because of the inlays. I am interested as I have a couple of patterns I would like to try using mother of pearl ( I do a lot of segmenting)........Another comment about finishing comes from a chap from Ukraine who has turned over 1000 Bog Oak pens and his only finish is Walnut oil. I have seen photographs of his pens and they look fantastic. I just buff my Bog Oak pens with White Diamond and Ren. Wax.

Where do you get your Opals from! If I may ask I know it's crushed Opals but the place I get them from there not that fine like yours
@cursed_to_toil4 ай бұрын
@@Mikey-Crafts I produce them myself and also sell them in my Etsy store. CursedToToil Superior Opal. My product is also much cleaner than other suppliers since I crush and clean it all by hand. Other suppliers buy it precrushed and results in a product that has “dead-spots” where there is not brilliance. Mine is free of that entirely

Wonderful looking pens. That inlay technique is great. Other pens I saw you make you used a powder with a CA glue in guessing. I jist started making pens about 2 months ago and did one with some inlay. Turned out good for using some nail polish to fill in my groves I made. I am always looking for new ways to make them pop. Can I ask what that powder is? Maybe chat with you sometime to discuss pen techniques.

Sure, the inlay I’m using is a crushed Bello Opal. It’s a lab made opal that I produce and sell in my Etsy store. But there is nothing like it for the end result for inlay. But it is on the pricey side of inlay (about $10/gram) But it’s definitely worth the practice because their the coolest looking pens I’ve ever seen not being boastful but man they just look incredible with a good inlay and finish on them.

Ok... listen... You just saved me! I'm a disabled single Mother and I don't make enough to live on my own yet. I'm hoping if I can make things, I can work around my disability. I'm new to wood turning and I love my WEN but I cannot turn that wheel!!! Now having been raised in a traditional family, I had to work very hard to get out of the kitchen to get into the garage and all my life being told how dangerous everything was and when men run to take over when I just hold the measuring tape has given me a healthy dose of fear and insecurity! It wasn't until recently that I realized... Men don't know what they're doing anymore than I am, they're just willing to just try methods until the solution ultimately works. Sometimes I struggle with feeling so out of my element and I wonder why I'm attempting this until this video! I didn't occur to me that men would struggle with this wheel as well! This is solution saved my business let alone my spirits. Such a simple fix, I did it myself, finally no man came to rescue me (because I kicked them all out of my garage) I didn't cry for once AND I just hollowed out my blank and it didn't even hurt! I'm liberated. Thank you for this ray of hope! More please!

Awesome! I got it and will have it out in the morning 😉👍 I look forward to seeing what you make if you can tag me in it. Quick tip is to watch your heat when sanding down and making a design of various sized dots or holes is much easier than the lines to start out. And with lines, I use a diamond cutting wheel for the lines and the control the slow burning cuts it makes

I process and sell the opal in my Etsy store at CursedToToil under superior opal. But I do use other inlay materials though, nothing really compares to the brilliance that Bello opal gives. My store sells 3 sizes. 0.75mm, 1.5mm, and 2.5mm. The 0.75 and 1.5mm are great for the low profile designs. The 2.5mm, if it fits looks awesome as well!
