Fortunate enough to hear this band in the late 70's and 80's 7-8 times and the combo he had afterwards. Once I was close enough I could have shook hands with Maynard during the performance. The recordings don't give it justice. The power and volume coming off that stage was crazy.

I have seen Maynard and his band at least 4 times. I got to meet drummer Peter Erskine at one gig in Sarasota, Florida where he taught us all how to correctly snap our fingers (jazz style). His sax/flute player Bobby Militello used to play in a band in Detroit. My parents have a signed album of his.

Wonderful! Used to play this in Jazz Ensemble as senior high school back in '85. I played this as the drummer. We had a trumpet player that was a huge Maynard fan. His nick name was "Babyfat," he hit these high notes and was just rippin'! This was always the last song of any concerts that we did. Always brough the house down. Awesome times!

He lived in Ojai, CA, and would do free concerts at Ojai HS in the gym. late 70s early 80s. See Maynard and band in the gym. Great.

In the mid 70's when we were starting in band, every trumpet player wanted to grow up to be Maynard, Chuck, Miles, Doc, or Bill (Chase). Took me a few years to realize trumpet wasn't for me (everyone else knew straight away). So I switched and found my chops were much better geared for trombone. We played this song in jazz band in high school. Brings back fun memories.

I was lucky enough to see Weather Report in Ann Arbor MI when Jaco Pastorius was on bass and Peter Erskin was on drums. They blew the roof off the Michigan Theater for over two hours. One of the encore pieces was Birdland. The original version, written by them was on the album "Heavy Weather."

A friend and I went to a concert of his at a small venue in Frisco once, back in the '80's. I liked it, but she could not understand why every horn/flute was "miked". "New Vintage" is still a favorite album of mine, as is "Conquistador"

Mr. Ferguson came to our regional band workshop in 1980, held at State College, Pa. Let's not forget Chuck Mangione.

Like many others in the comments section, I saw him live in late 70's at a free outdoor show in Baltimore. Great show and made me an instantaneous fan. Love this cover of Weather Report!

You correct, Eric Traub on Tenor. I was playing at a club in Houston about 1980. “Rockefeller’s originally a bank. Those three Eric, MIGS and Bobby Militello. Great sax section!

I saw Maynard's band in 1975 in Peabody Mass and was hooked. I saw his band several times between the 70s and. 90s I remember seeing his daughter sitting on the sidelines reading a romance novel!

An alto flute in the Maynard Ferguson band is like a dog whistle at the Super Bowl. It's meaningless.
