You are the first one I watch touching something that bothered me a lot for years: the overexposed or "too much light" issue. When I was painting miniatures, I tended to paint them too dark just because I had too much light on them.

Thank you! This video is so straightforward and helpful, just what I was needing. This summer I moved across country and changed from a dinging room studio in which the available, artificial lighting was consistent all day and night to a living room studio with a nine-foot length of five-feet-tall, north-facing windows, something I had thought was an ideal in the art world, but have been thoroughly confused by what is happening with my paintings. One is too cool, another is too harsh, another is too warm, and they look different at different times of day or when I flip on or off different artificial lights in the room. I have ruined a couple old favorites from my previous studio by "correcting" them here, only to discover that it was the lighting of that particular hour that had made the painting seem "incorrect" in the first place. It's felt like learning to paint all over again! I knew the lighting (or rather my understanding of the lighting) was the issue, but didn't know how to fix it. I also knew that there are such things as warm bulbs, cool bulbs, Kelvin, CFI, Lux, and light sensors -- I had seen all of that in videos before, but this is the first video that has really pulled it together in a way that makes sense. Your explanations are straightforward and clear, but also showing the differences with your paintings, the different light settings back and forth, helped pull these ideas together for me. I will subscribe and also look up your artwork! The wolf and winter creek paintings that you showed here are beautiful.

This is by far the best studio lighting tutorial I’ve seen. I’ve been a plein air painter for 20 years but have been trying to work in a studio for the past year. The lighting is absolutely maddening. This video should really help me get things set up completely. The only thing not really covered was how to avoid glare, which is a huge problem I am having.

I’m having trouble with glare also, hence I’m watching videos on lighting also. I’ve wondered if the soft boxes eliminate this. I have the overhead 5000k fluorescent lights. I haven’t tried lamps as I thought it might worsen the glare, but will give it a try.

What is the lumen for your light bulbs? On most product page they only listed the lumen, no lux. So I wouldn't know before I purchased it. I also tried to look for bulbs with 6500K because I want to match my monitor temperature, but all of those bulbs only came with CRI 80. The CRI 95 bulbs are all between 2700K to 5000K.

FWTW - watts and light levels are virtually unrelated. Lux is the measure of light intensity, as you correctly point out. Watts, are energy, and are only distantly related to light intensity. My kiln, 11,000 watts, is not an effective light source in my garage at night. With the lights off, it does glow, but it would be difficult to read by... Unfortunately, over the last 150 years, we've been told that the wattage of a lightbulb was equivalent to its brightness. Really, people should be looking at lux or lumens. Great video otherwise, my partner will love the soon to be re-lit studio space I'm going to make for her.

Dear Derek, thank you very much for this great, informative and practical video. You said the light should be 1500 - 2000 lux. I can not see "lux" on bulb information instead lumen information is given. Does 1500 -2000 lux countable as almost equal to 1500-2000 lumen for a very small space? I have a very small studio and it is almost impossible to work with natural day light. And these details are very important for me. Thank you again

I use this same technique to feed the squirrels in my backyard. Although it took me months to have a select few that will regularly come and take a nut from my hand. I have a female with one arm missing, probably from a predator attack, who will take from my hand and stay at my feet to eat. We call her mama. Also as mentioned in the video, do not over feed wild animals as it will interfere with their natural foraging instincts. ❤🐿

@wildrealmspublishing

All treated wood runs the risk of impurities. I only gesso one side of the board this reduces the risk as fluids also travel the path of least resistance. Used masonite for over 25 years now and have not had a single issue. Hope that helps 😉
