I was just in a park yesterday and a black capped chickadee landed on a branch so close to me. I happened to have seeds on me, and I was so excited when it actually flew into my hand to get the seeds! So amazing!

I been hand feeding scrub jays for years. Finally moved to a place where they have chickadees. I had played a chickadees song from my phone and two flew out of no where responding back. They were really interested in it like little small feathered dophines. It made me laugh so hard. Great video.

Had my first experience at this today. A number of Chickadees come to the bird feeder that is out in the yard. Over the last few months I noticed that they were not shy when I would be passing nearby to the feeder and would continue to feed with little hesitation. It occurred to me that they would likely be courageous enough to take food from a hand and so I took some seed and stood near the feeders. They took notice of me but continues at the feeders. I took the feeders down and returned with my seed-filled hand extended and after a few minutes one of them did a mock approach or two and then landed and it picked out a black sunflower seed and flew away. I stayed, holding still and waited some more and after a few more minutes the bird returned and took another sunflower seed. They seem to have zero interest in the other seed types. I noticed in your video here that you were feeding them solely the same black sunflower seeds. I realized as I was feeding them that I need to go pick up some sunflower seeds and your video just confirms it. Cheers and keep birding!

So weird, the chickadees at my feeder have the option of some white sunflower seeds (not sure exactly what kind, but de-shelled) and another feeder with black oil and almost every bird in the area including the chickadees prefer the white seeds. Even books I have seem to say they love black oil, but it doesn't seem to be the case for me. Only the Scrub Jay and House Finches sometimes eat them here.
@wildrealmspublishing3 жыл бұрын
@@Uollie it is because it is un-shelled, no work involved ;)
@Uollie3 жыл бұрын
@@wildrealmspublishing Oh is that it? I can't say I personally inspected each seed to check out the differences, I just trusted some bird books I bought that recommended black oil and un-shelled to attract various backyard birds. I'll try to let the un-shelled empty and leave the black oil out and see what happens!

I am just really taking notice of all the birds around me. And, the chickadee is one I'm so wanting to see. Im used to hearing one but haven't seen it yet... This morning I heard 2 singing back & forth to each other! I'm hoping I'll get to see them soon & try feeding them down the road if they seem open to that. :)

Thanks for the tips, there is a flock that hang out in my yard most of the day so I need to try this with them. They have been pretty skittish I think because of the many raccoons, possums, bob cats that have been hanging out in my yard as well. I have been putting out food and water due to the crazy heat here in Seattle this summer but I will wane them off of it. I have maybe 50-60 plants and shrubs so they do also forage on the property but they have been getting bossed around by other birds like wood peckers, robins, jays and so on.

At some point you begin to realize its not really you they are wary of any more, because they start looking at anything and everything EXCEPT you. Birds always have a healthy amount of distrust, er, respect, for other birds especially when it comes to competing for food. You DO begin to develop a bond with some. I have the complete trust of two chickadees. I can push up with my hand suddenly and it will simply flutter in place for a split second before re-settling on my hand. I never tire of them.

I use this same technique to feed the squirrels in my backyard. Although it took me months to have a select few that will regularly come and take a nut from my hand. I have a female with one arm missing, probably from a predator attack, who will take from my hand and stay at my feet to eat. We call her mama. Also as mentioned in the video, do not over feed wild animals as it will interfere with their natural foraging instincts. ❤🐿

I like to put unshelled peanuts in there and watch them decide which to take. It's comical. They will pickup a seed, look around, pickup a peanut and go back and forth trying to decide for a few seconds before taking off with the peanut most of the time
