Hey my brother I’m jealous I’ve been trying to get my better half to go winter camping with me for a few years. She says if it’s below 50 it’s a no go 😂. I’m not a fan of camping alone and I enjoy company while sitting around the fire. About 3 years ago I bought a small 5 acre, over grown with brush, wooded property in SE PA. I’ve got a tent that accommodates two queen air mattresses and a buddy heater with the hose to attach a 20lb propane cylinder. There is no electric no toilet besides a bucket with a toilet seat lid. I probably can’t afford this property but I remind myself what therapy would cost each month and in my head it offsets the cost. If you ever make it this way let me know I’ll get you set up for a weekend of being spoiled with the private camp. My tent stays up for a month at a time since I stay out there as often as possible.

Haha winter camping isn’t for everyone! People look at me like I’m crazy when I tell them I enjoy it haha! But that sounds like a very cool set up and I am definitely jealous! The next time I’m in PA I will definitely take you up on that offer. I really appreciate that!

I told my dad about this video. He said when was 5 or 6 years old, his grandpa Sam drove him over there in his model A. Quite a hill going down to the river he said. He said there was a store porch that all the old timers told stories and he loved it. Great memory for him!

That’s very cool! Thank you for sharing that! When I was researching it a lot of people talked about the store and how it was pretty much the center of the community. Thanks for watching!

I had not thought of adding wire to the lighter for a lanyard attachment point. Got me thinking of wrapping a few feet of snare wire under the duct tape. Duo-purpose falls into my idea of a more efficient kit for my bag. Also one other mod I do is place a zip tie under the lip of the red thumb button so it can’t get accidentally pressed and leak the gas from it. Keep the videos coming!

That’s a great idea I’ll try that out sometime!

The whole time I was watching I was thinking about the families of those buried there, and was relieved to hear they had been moved and not just covered and forgotten. Very interesting video.
@RootsandRuinsOutdoors18 күн бұрын
Thanks for watching! But yes thankfully they were moved, there were quite a few cemeteries that were moved during those reservoir projects. It’s a very interesting deep dive!

Thanks! Surprisingly there’s quite a few ghost towns in the reservoirs around Indiana! Winter is the best time to check them out so you definitely should!

Good reminders to your viewers to take a breath and breathe before panicking and to use a method to self rescue. To the viewers don’t forget to leave a plan with someone at home so if you aren’t able to find your way out there is a good place to start looking for you.
@RootsandRuinsOutdoors28 күн бұрын
Absolutely, good point! There’s so many cases of people going missing and no one knows until weeks later. 100% leave a detailed plan with dates before heading out.

I tell ya what.. back in 2014 I was hunting the Manistee National forest for the first time. I was 44. It started snowing on my way into where I was gonna sit from the night before. Well around noon i was gonna head out to the road and go check on my buddy.. we now had almost 8" of snow. Im walkin and walkin and like man, wth!? Finally a few more feet and I walk up onto the tree and make shift blind where I had set the morning... from the opposite direction I had left it.. I had walked a ginormous circle. I did not realize I had been lost until then. By the grace of God I walked back up to my blind.. I was able to get back to the road after that.. but with the fresh snow I didnt recognize anything and just assumed I would hit the road. Its the first time in my life I was lost in the woods. Its easy to get losr. I didnt belueve it till then.

That’s a great story showing exactly what can happen! I think we all underestimate our ability to get lost sometimes. I know I’ve been turned around a couple times thankfully it was easy to get back on course, but it wakes you up nonetheless!

I have the old Cairn and Cairn 2, as well as the day pack. All with strappettes, great EDC or weekend pack.
@RootsandRuinsOutdoors29 күн бұрын
I agree, mountainsmith makes great gear. The strappettes are even compatible with their duffel bags as well.

There is a no-sew method of adding a better Kifaru hip belt to replace the Mountainsmith.
@RootsandRuinsOutdoors29 күн бұрын
I’ll have to look into those. My one gripe about the pack is its hip belt. I oftentimes just don’t use it.
@mountaintownnaturalist264628 күн бұрын
@ The founder of Mountainsmith developed the Omni belt design used in the Lumbar Day pack. He then sold Mountainsmith and started Kifaru, where he kept doing the Omni belt. The old Lumbar Day pack accepted the 1” tensioning webbing straps for years until MS did the next to the last model. That one (and so far as I know, the current one) had 3/4” triglide hardware. The triglides in both instances were anchored to webbing loops on the pack. My solution was to get 1” triglides and anchor them to the webbing loops. Works great, and I have carried a camera/long lens, binoculars, a journal, and a 32 oz kleen kanteen throughout the States and overseas with that belt and an after market over-the-shoulder strap.

That tan USMC sustainment pouch is designed to carry a lot of food which is heavy so don’t be afraid to put some weight in it if you have to.
@RootsandRuinsOutdoorsАй бұрын
Oh yea they are tough, but I may be asking too much of the webbing at that point haha
