@@InglebardGamingit’s a possibility. The newer Mega Drive core is one of the most accurate cores available. I read it was developed from a full de-capping of Mega Drive hardware. Then there’s the possibility that glitches observed also exist on real hardware too. I’ve seen plenty of people questioning visual anomalies on MiSTer which are accurate to original hardware. Of course, it could actually be an inaccuracy in the core. Most cores are so good now, it’s practically impossible to tell if a glitch is supposed to be there without a direct A-B comparison to original hardware. Which is a pretty great problem to have.

This idea of "Arcade is the original so automatically better than home ports" is so beyond me. The Genesis music is way better. Feels like this makes people forget to actually listen, and just compare Arcade with Genesis. But that's just IMO.

My original MiSTer setup probably cost me about £400 in total to put together, and it was probably the best gaming investment I ever made. I didn't even own a USB keyboard so I that includes all hidden costs and extra controllers / adaptors that I couldn't resist. I went for a Multisystem because it had a consolised form factor, an RGB SCART port, a power switch and didn't look like an amateur electronics project. I still have all my real hardware hooked up (the MiSTer slotted into the chain like everything else) but I'd be lying if I said much of it gets used these days. For my use case (arcade / retro enthusiast with no interest in save states/ advanced emulator functions or using modern display) I can't imagine another gaming device ever meeting my needs as well. Users like me are now getting a second MiSTer because holy hell a complete MiSTer Pi worked out to something like £148 delivered - it's no longer something behind a somewhat 'elitist' or boutique paywall. Regardless, I'm keen to see how your MiSTer Pi ownership influences / enhances your comparison videos. I think the combination of your keen eye and distain for the evangelical branch of the community could result in some very entertaining work.

Regarding any layer priority issues in the GBA core (or others)... I recommend you start writing down any issues you noticed and file bug reports with the devs... as they may be able to fix it. I have seen many an update with the description being fixing an issue in one particular game... so I know they do often care and sometimes fix things. I can't speak for others but I've not really noticed any FPGA snobs. In fact, both of them predominant MiSTer KZbinrs (PCN and VGE) go out of their way to not disparage software-based emulation and mention that they use it quite often themselves. I think most of us are use-all-the-tools kinda folks... so I apologize on behalf of any of the FPGA snobs you have encountered. I avoid all social media except for KZbin... and a few Discord-based communities.

Nice video. I'm receiving my Mister Pi kit next week, and the one from QMTech a few weeks later. I'm currently playing Goldeneye on the original N64, and it's awesome, but either my Ultra HDMI mod, the Everdrive or the console itself are starting to glitch out (I suspect the Everdrive, though). But I can barely wait to test NES/GB/SNES/PS1/N64/Saturn on the Mister. Then, maybe, I can put my PS1, Saturn and N64 into storage somewhere, to de-clutter my gaming room.

I saw that you were talking a lot about latency. While playing Alien - Resurrection on the original PS1 (SD card modded, connected to a Retrotink 5 Pro), there are some instanced where an alien waits for you immediately after opening a door. On a midrange Samsung QLED with 20 ms latency, I could kill those in 50% of instances with a direct shotgun blast in the face, even if I knew exactly when the aliens would appear. Now, with an LG C3, which has ~7 ms latency, I can kill them in 90% of cases. It's all about the lag, and those 13 ms difference between my old and new TV are a huge deal. I used a DS4 with a Brook PS1/PS2 wireless adapter, so that would add another ~15 ms.

From the stuff I've tested so far, I can tell you that you'll probably be very happy with it. You'll want to enable fast USB polling if your controller of choice supports it for even better response times. And yeah, the TV you're using can make a huge difference. I've had some older LCDs that were insanely bad with their lag time. But even the cheap Hi-Sense big screen I have now is pretty good in game mode. I doubt I'll ever hook it up to my or any CRT since it just doesn't feel like it's necessary.

@@InglebardGaming I'll probably use a dualsense in wireless mode, which can support an insane polling rate (don't know yet how that will work out with #that BT/wifi dongle). There is a reboot button on top of the Mister and MiSter Pi so you really do not have to pull the power out. A real advantage is that its so small you can have it sitting near your TV in your lounge and it wont be noticed like a PC.

The reboot button doesn't turn the power off, it just restarts the system. You can also do that from the on-screen display menu. But there is no way in the menu or on the mister pi to turn it all the way off and leave it that way. You have to unplug it, turn off a power strip, or use an ac adapter with a power switch on the cable, as I mentioned in the video.

@InglebardGaming

Whether or not it's superior at all depends on the accuracy of the core. Some GBA games that run fine on certain emulators have glitches or issues in the MiSTer core, for example. I'm not knocking it or any of the developers working on them. It's just not automatically better, everything depends on humans entering info so there's always room for error.

For anyone wondering about the performance of the Saturn Core, its still in active development by someone in a Country currently under attack/invasion from an aggressor nation to it's North. So, the fact that it exists at all is impressive, but, its being worked on, and it will be as close as SRG can get it (which is to say, probably 99.99% accurate) when its finally finished. The PS1 core is very mature, and the N64 one is considered completed, but they're still adding some new tweaks too it.

The main reason I'd consider a FPGA solution would be Sega Saturn, as from PS1 and below, we can even surpass original hardware/game design input lag using solutions such as runahead and preemptive frames. Capcom games, specially arcade ones are notorious for having input delay in order to give the moves/punches/kicks more weight, this is also true for the likes of King of Fighter games, and while this is OK, these games just feel better with that out of the equation, specially nowadays. As for the Saturn, there are a few games we can reduce input delay in Retroarch (Beetle Core), but this core still eats a ton of CPU cycles and maybe in the near future, it will be as feasible as the PS1 in this regard, but today, I can only see the FGPA as the go-to solution (not considering real hardware, of course) for great Saturn emulation with the least input delay possible. Still, I'm not picking one as I'm not THAT into it enough, but IF I was to pick one, Saturn would be the only reason. Even though I'm really happy with the current state of Saturn emulation in Retroarch (Mednafen/Beetle Core).
@InglebardGaming
@InglebardGaming 7 күн бұрын
Yeah, Saturn is a great reason to consider one of these now. While Saturn emulation is basically fine these days through stuff like Beetle Saturn, a mister pi setup with everything you need is competitive with a bunch of other solutions and has the bonus of reduced input delay.
@roberto1519
@roberto1519 6 күн бұрын
@@InglebardGaming Other benefits from solutions such as Retroarch is its portability, we can share the same settings and control remaps across a wide range of devices. Software emulation also allows for increased performance, for instance, the best Road Rash is the original 3DO version, but it's the slowest compared to the ports, now we can increase the base console CPU hundreds of times, making the game smooth as butter, with runahead/preemptive frames, if the CPU can handle all that, it's way better than the original console. All the above are but a few examples where I think software emulation is just more convenient and more powerful, this is not touching NDS, PS2, PSP, Xbox, Dreamcast and other systems that are only possible with this approach, at least for the foreseeable future. But again, I have a soft spot for the Saturn and would be really nice to have a FPGA with a small Saturn console case on top of that.
@InglebardGaming
@InglebardGaming 3 күн бұрын
Don't get me wrong, I love Retroarch and other emulators that are out there these days, but some of the solutions for less input delay definitely aren't perfect. Run ahead and preemptive frames both cause glitches in a LOT of games for various systems. And I love a lot of the Android portable devices (the Odin 2 is fantastic), I just wish someone could do something about the severe control delay in Android. It doesn't matter for all games, but it makes a big difference in some. In general software emulation is great for the most part and the only way to play games from newer systems, other than on real hardware. I don't think all of the systems you mentioned are beyond the scope of what MiSTer can EVER do, I know someone's been working on a DS core, for example. But who knows, and eventually people will move on to boards with other chips that might make the other systems possible. While I like the Mister Pi, overall, there are a lot of instances where I still prefer software emulation, but both approaches will change more over time. You already have things like the 'turbo' N64 core that can run games at higher frame rates than real hardware, for example.
@roberto1519
@roberto1519 2 күн бұрын
@@InglebardGaming No, you're totally right, I'm not saying software emulation is perfect at all. Yes, the overclocking and other aspects I mentioned are definitely doable on the likes of FPGA, it's just that it's not available today, but it can certainly happen. As for runahead and other approaches to reduce input lag, it WILL cause glitches if we set a number that will surpass the internal emulator+game latency frames, for instance, if we set runahead to 4 in SMW, it will indeed cause a few glitches (most notably frames skipped), while the safe zone would be 3 for this game, but not all games will work with 3, some should be set to 2 and some to 1, specially arcade shooters, they already have low latency by design. It's a matter of trying each game, if you noticed frames being skipped, it's time to lower the setting.

But, your 100% right, it is not error free, and FPGA is not instantly perfection. The community is great to investigate things when people highlight them though. Lots of audio improvements, that hopefully get ported onto software emulators also. Lots of cool people around Discord too. Always good to stay clear of the snobs. Absolutely love the Saturn. My all time favourite console. I still have my original model 1 PAL and model 2 NTSC-J consoles hooked up to a CRT. Regularly play through the likes of Panzer Dragoon Saga, Burning Rangers, Deep Fear, NiGHTS, etc, etc. So many incredible games that so few ever played. So sad. We we're rather fortunate in the UK/Europe in that Sega of Europe fought real hard for us Saturn fans. Often ignoring SoA or even going completely around them in the case of Sonic R. SoE were at the mercy of SoA's decisions so we missed out on many games that would've sold tremendously here because they weren't 'right' for the US market. This trait would plague SoA for years. For example, Valkryria Chronicles 3 on the PSP was never localised due to 'poor sales' of VC2 in the US. However it was one of the best selling PSP in Europe, receiving a 'PSP Essentials' release. But no, it sold 'poorly' in the US so no VC3 for Europe. The UK official Saturn mag were absolute champions for approaching SoE to get disc 1 of Panzer Saga onto the magazine cover as they insisted people needed to play it. It was a losing battle but they fought ferociously.

Absolutely agree that Galaxy Force II is the pinnacle of sprite based super scalers. Power Drift is also easily up there too but then it never came out on the Genesis (tho PC Engine version is quite impressive for what it is). Super Monaco GP on Genesis can't come close to arcade in graphics but in game play and fun factor, it ran circles around the arcade. The real hidden gem of this game is the career mode. You can spend hours and hours playing this to build your driver and car to go for that world championship. And tho the graphics paled compared to the arcade, it did a pretty decent job with all the on-screen displays, sense of speed, excellent controls, and great sound effects. I think the arcade Turbo Outrun doesn't get enough credit... I played it so much back in the days (while waiting for my turn for SFII ;-) and I might even say I like it more than Outrun. Most people assume Outrun is the king of driving games but give Turbo Outrun another try - if you get the timing right for when to use turbo to blast through the road obstacles, it's really amusing and the sense of speed is higher than Outrun. Plus, this can go either way, but I prefer F40 over Testarossa😜

There wouldn't have been a tremendous difference in performance between that and 4mhz anyway, you're talking about a 10% cpu speed difference with no speedup in processing on supporting chips (vdp, etc).

Nice review! Got one coming for Chrimbo. And that music... love it. Used to listen to a now-defunct SwitchRPG podcast that introed and outroed with that music. What is that tune, please?

Agree that the mega drives sounds and music were basically the arcade just scratchy - The snes ones were redone exclusively for the snes

Love the PC Engine, but there's no question that the Megadrive was always superior in every way possible.

The PCE does have an advantage in on-screen colors, but that wasn't well utilized in most of its titles.

The Genesis dithering is far less abrasive on a CRT, especially 13-19”, as was common when the game was new.

Having played the game extensively on a 13 inch crt for years, I completely disagree. Dithering was VERY obvious on it.

The 24 bits reference might be based on the 24 bits address bus of the Motorola 68000 used in the console.

Not at pointless. This is very important knowledge. Honestly, I prefer the NES version. Less detail in the art, but the colors pop so much better to me.

Inglebard, do you actually like Battletoads as a game? My first time playing the game was when it was first released as a rental. Years passed, I played a bit through Nesticle and later the Rare Replay compilation came out and I was able to revisit the game, played it a bit and put it away. It wasn't until 2020 that I was able to actually beat the NES game through the collection. Even with rewind it was still TOUGH. I wanted to go through every version before playing the new 2020 game, which I feel missed the mark. The only surviving experience from playing the 2020 was the metal soundtrack, which I still listen to this day.

Hey, sorry for the late reply, I didn't see your comment. As a game, I'm not a huge fan. I can appreciate the visuals and the variety on offer, but I feel like it's overly difficult and punishing. There are just way too many surprise deaths and one-hit kills for a game with an energy bar. Yeah, with practice you'll get better, but it just goes way harder than top tier games, in my opinion. Back in the day, if I were reviewing it, I'd probably have given it a 6 / 10.

The arcade ran at a higher resolution and has more RAM than the 3DO and every other home console at that time, so of course it looks better and has more details. No home console at that time could perfectly replicate the arcade version, but the 3DO came the closest and all my friends and I absolutely loved it! We played the crap out of the 3DO version and quickly tossed the Genesis and SNES versions aside.
