Tell me , on page 8 of the manual for the 817 it says "The FBA-28 battery holder is designed for use solely with Alkaline type “AA” cells. Do not attempt to use Ni-Cd or other rechargeable cells in the FBA-28, because it does not contain the protection circuitry required when using rechargeable cells" so how come u can use rechargable batteries in it
@TheNoCodeTech
@TheNoCodeTech 6 күн бұрын
I believe the manual states not to use rechargeables because the 817 doesn't contain the circuitry to properly recharge using the FBA-28. I do not use the 818 to recharge. I recharge in an EBL recharged. Thank you. :edit- spelling

I've got two of those Yaesu "Dry Cell" battery trays/cases/holders, and this particular model works in both my VX-170 (from 2007) and my recently purchased FT-60. But I've only loaded them with standard "Alkaline" cells. In the past, with other Yaesu HT's, they seem to work fine with either standard cells OR rechargeable cells. I've never heard from any of my fellow "Ham" operators any issues like your having here. GOOD LUCK

Yeah I did this too a long time ago, although I scored along each side by using an engineer's back marking gauge and flipped the whole central spine out. I reckon your way is a better method to achieve the same end. Then it dawned on me that I had created two rows of very low internal resistance cells separated by two thin layers of shrink wrap and the whole cell casings are positive. Later I found the radio cutting out which was down to the cells still resisting the springs after the occasional jolt. I tried using dry film lubricant on the shrink wrap, then I gave up and chalked it down to yet another Yaesu goof with these radios. One of those cells in the video has damaged shrink wrap at one end ...

I believe that may work but you should not use it with the desktop battery charger because that particular battery case does not protect against overcharge. You would have to charge the batteries individually/separately with their own battery charger. Also, the recent Yaesu Ft-60 North America model - the 12V side connector is used to operate the radio only and will not charge the batteries.

If you use 6 batteries × 1.5 V = 9 volts , the original yaesu battery is 7.5 volts so you have to put 1 dummy battery to get the right voltage.

I have the same radio and I also bought one of those battery case and I didn't have any issues I didn't have to do any modifications, I tried with regular batteries and Energizer rechargeable batteties and it worked just fine. Don't buy those Chinese batteries some are oversized a little fatter, use energizer batteries.

Hey @TheNoCodeTech I'd like to mod the radio to be able to recharge it from the DC jack input as well, not just the cradle, so it's easier to use in the filed. Was thinking maybe that's something you've looked into already. Cheers.

No yeah fo sho mate. Something about the wiring on the tray supposedly prevents this from happening, I'm not entirely sure on that at the moment. But yeah, I wish there was a way to disable the charge option from accidentally being set in the menu, but to be honest that menu is so whack anyway. lol Hey man, thank you for watching. Keep on being awesome!

Measuring the voltage out of the package doesn’t tell you anything about the amount of charge they have, because lithium ion batteries have a very flat discharge curve. They will read near 1.5 volts until they are nearly discharged. That also renders the battery level indicator in most devices useless when using these batteries in place of alkaline batteries.

Great review, thank you. This additional power method will definitely open up this radio's usage spectrum and hopefully many users will dust it down and get it back into the field. I find Duracell pretty good, but I have also opted for 18650 2800mAh in a separate try which works really well. Great to see so many 817/8 users on here.

They have to be either nicad or nimh (the only widely available chemistries which produce 1.2v per cell) and these are compatible with chargers. If they were lithium AA cells, they will just not charge. Most of the lithium rechargeable AA cells physically won't charge in a regular charger.

As an 817 user, power management when portable has always been a challenge. The supplied battery is only good enough for maybe an hour or so at best, so getting more power to your radio is paramount. I started to use 3500mAh 11.1v Lipo for model aircraft and they worked very well, however they needed to sit outside of the radio. LADDA from IKEA seem to be fairly well recommended, however as you have said, getting them into the tray can be a problem. There are two things that can help with this which I am about to try, so might be worth giving it a go. Lay a piece of sandpaper on a flat surface and run the try over it, keeping is as flat as possible, this sands down all the edges and bottom, allowing for a little bit of wiggle room when putting the tray into the radio, secondly, populate the tray when its in the radio, I don't know why, but this definitely helps. There is a 3rd option but a bit more tricky and that is to dremel the inside of each corner where the batteries pinch. Once working, make sure that the green wire is cut on the tray, not the radio, and this will allow your batteries to be charged via the charging circuit from the radio when plugged into the wall, that way you don't have to remove them each time. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eavaf5SffpiZe9U Thank you for taking the time to share your experiences.
