You should send a small surface task force to raid the Kuril islands. With the bombing he may assume you may be invading. Several destroyers and maybe a light cruiser or two. He may take the bait and transfer forces there and away from places important to you.
@gillynt7 күн бұрын
I love this idea. I was toying with what I could do there to further distract him up there. I have reason to believe he has air units on Hokkaido and possibly one of the southern Kuril islands. But it's possible that small enough ships can sneak through undetected and also evade any bombs/torpedoes that might come if discovered. It's definitely something I'll seriously consider.

No sounds for the discussion so skipped it. Good of your opponent to keep fighting despite things going rapidly downhill. It's fun to see the Allies start driving back and it will be good practice for you if you fight a skilled Japanese player in the future, and just give you experience with the island hopping dynamic. Also your opponent has to practice too, and can see how far he can get before defeat. It will be fun to see where he makes his stand because his pilot pool must be completely shot by now.

A shrinking Japanese pilot pool is my goal. As for how good my opponent is, I know he doesn't use the same strategies as some players, but he has more experience than I do. So I imagine that he knows some things I don't--whether or not that's true. As for island hopping dynamic, I plan to start looking into using barges at some point. It's something I've been thinking about recently. Never tried that before.

There are some surviving bases and dot bases in the eastern DEI. Can you load up some small ships or APD's and get a base working deep in enemy territory. If you get it up to level 1-2 you can get fighters in from Darwin and threaten that whole area. Also it may force him to act with carriers.

Regarding *Victorious*, she was historically temporarily re-flagged as the USS Robbin and deployed to SOPAC on loan while the Essex class began to come off the slipways. Honestly would just concentrate it with the other CVs and use all that strength for a big raid on Truk depending on how degraded his Solomons/NG bases are.

The zigxag position form Prome to Toungoo seems like a good defensive position in Burma. That 1400AV can probably stand up to the Japanese in that hex even with the Rangoon force added to it, and his airforce is infrior to your own.

Meh, night bombing of ships is a complete waste of supply. The strafing attack with fighters was the only successful ship attack you've made, but why not try and port strike Tavoy? I guess it really doesn't matter now that Rangoon is taken.
@gillynt2 ай бұрын
My airfields Prome and Bassein are pretty full as is. To add my bombers would be overstacked. And maybe I didn't show it (sorry if not), but he has about 140+ fighters at Tavoy. It's possible he's got them all on CAP.
@Rayrard2 ай бұрын
It really doesnt matter if he is producing airframes... the Japanese airforce simply cannot take the losses they've taken. More than 800 Tojos destroyed. The Japanese pilot quality is crashing rapidly and your planes and pilots are improving.
@Rayrard2 ай бұрын
In no way should you withdraw even a hex (except cede Rangoon of course). Even if he gets Rangoon he can't go anywhere. He has no bombardment target anymore, Rangoon is destroyed, and you have total air superiority. He cannot dislodge your troops from any hex besides Rangoon, especially if you have units consolidate. If you retreat you make the loss of all the troops, planes, and British ships 100% worthless. The Japanese are losing the attrition war in Burma.
@gillynt2 ай бұрын
I appreciate this feedback. Makes me rethink what I'm actually working on during the current turn. Very timely that I read this right now actually. Reviewing the situation just north of Rangoon, as of February 3, I have made a couple of changes that will help (fingers crossed) and hold the line where it is.
@jacobmartin11002 ай бұрын
I don't think you should give up Prome. You hold command of the air over everywhere except Rangoon and can thus hold the clear terrain ahead of Prome or the hex itself. Prome is a lynchpin which connects Burma to India, and losing it means you lose access to reinforcements from the Raj overland (at least as easily as anything marching overland from the Raj can be). The new defensive line is probably sensible for the north, but you can't just give up Prome like that, not after forcing him to bleed over Rangoon. He won't have the shore bombardment, he has more than lost the air war and will continue to do so, you will only gain more troops in India who can be brought to bear in Burma, and your strength in bombers will only grow, allowing you to dominate clear terrain and slow his advance. Ceding Prome surrenders these advantages and puts you on the back foot in a way that is not desirable. With the forces presently available trying to relieve Rangoon, you could easily hold Prome while keeping the armor in reserve, reconstituting the forces from Rangoon, and shoring up the rest of the defensive line, all the while receiving a steady stream of supplies and troops from India.
@gillynt2 ай бұрын
I love it Jacob. Great advice. I am pulling out of Rangoon, if he lets me. Otherwise, those guys will be trashed and have to rail to safety at Prome. Additionally, I'll have to pull back in other areas. However, I love your advice to hold Prome. And I like your points about air dominance. Even with Rangoon, he will have trouble bringing air power in, as I can keep all bases from Moulmein north in a destroyed state. With forts and better supply, Prome should be defensible, as you say. Thank you very much!

I think your play is good for the Allies except the British navy. Your play elsewhere is fine, even if it's more cautious. I do think your one turn of naval strafing was devastating and you hit a bunch of his ships. You can probably get the DD's and CL's if he operates from Moulmein. I think if he operates from Tavoy he is going to have fuel issues because he will have to operate at full speed constantly to cover the 5-6 hexes to Rangoon. I think it ends up being moot since Rangoon will fall eventually but hopefully you can defeat the Imperial Guards in the next couple turns and stabilize the front.

That CLAA was a good escort ship... not sure why your threw it away when you knew Japanese CA's were present in the area (bombardments). The Japanese probably had the CA force on maximum react and they reacted when you drove your fleet into the Rangoon hex, so the CL's retreated while the big boys stepped up. It may have been a great time for a carrier strike given how weak the mini-KB seems to be in the area, and the air superiority you have over Pegu and Moulmein.

Also, please stop attacking Wuchan or else your 2000 AV advantage will evaporate. You can't take a city with level 5 forts and 4 Japanese divisions with Chinese troops. You should just keep that 3500AV in place beseiging the city for months. You already accomplished your mission with the Chinese offensive and now you are just giving him free ground points.
@e.najorodnerolf26882 ай бұрын
Well to be fair he doesn't really know How to use the British Navy's ships cause it's not as modern as the American ships and the ijn ships like their heavy cruisers are more superior than the British when it comes to fire power, But it still hurts to see them perish, the first month's of the Bay of Bengal campaign was a smooth ride then suddenly turned into a bumpy one with the mission to resupply Rangoon.

Yes I guess Friedrich did that on purpose to keep the Japanese player happy. I saw no navy search and strike from him for months in that area. He is using his strike and dive bombers for ground and strikes what is nonsense. But he won the war months ago so this is more for entertainment.
@gillynt2 ай бұрын
I do have naval search that is supposed to cover that whole area between Port Blair and south of Moulmein. But the British naval and air forces are underperforming, even though they've been practicing war for over 3 years now.
@Rayrard2 ай бұрын
I agree with the other poster that you stopped pressuring him on the map. At least before he was paranoid about the Marshalls and Rabaul and now there are no invasions. He can almost focus 100% on the Indian Ocean in the last 2 weeks which is an advantage for him to get local superiority at least on land but also move KB to the Indian Ocean if he wants to.
@gillynt2 ай бұрын
Sure, but I've still got the initiative in these areas. If nothing else, I have air superiority in the three Pacific theaters, and I'm consolidating that superiority now. As for invasion action, these are being developed. Anywhere in the Solomons or Central Pacific that I've got in my sights, can't be effectively reinforced anymore. Plus, other than the VPs that I want to get from as many bases as I can, I could even bypass some of the islands. It may not make as good entertainment for the viewer, but I'm working on logistics and base-building for my new forward bases, to make my next leap defensible.
@Rayrard2 ай бұрын
I got caught up finally. The anticipation of the carriers was kind of a debby downer. Maybe it's the old Indian Ocean curse but the moment Allied ships enter the Indian Ocean you somehow find a way for Japanese torpedoes to hit you
@gillynt2 ай бұрын
Yeah, it's a mix of bad dice rolls (I think because of what I've seen from other RN ship results in campaigns that I'm not commanding) and my opponent either planning well with backup fleets, etc or simple luck. Either way, the Bay of Bengal has had the worst results for my ships, and I'm counting the terrible early KB strikes in the South Pacific.
@thelodrik21823 ай бұрын
That is your game so feel free to do whatever is in your mind. I only have the feeling it is far too slow and inactive. You could build up more pressure and use your carriers and ships. Calling back all carriers because 1 is damaged is a little strange.

The APDs are very useful ships for small invasions and resupply in risky waters. You are also accumulating AK and tanker sinkings that will hinder Japan in the future. It has been a long time since Japanese subs sank one of your merchant ships. The PT boats not only force expenditure of ammunition but time. If the bombardment group spends enough time fighting with small naval craft, they might not make it back to base during the night. Then they would be vulnerable to air attack.
@thelodrik21823 ай бұрын
That are not real PT ship. You need to separate between Harbour defense and ocean going PT boats. Not sure why there are no DB in Rangoon to hit these Japanese ship months ago. Add 750 mines in the hex of Rangoon and there is a safe port long ago.

I agree on the air bombardment. Usually, unless I am not paying attention, I do skip the aerial bombardments, with one important exception: if I want to see how my bombers do against the enemy aircraft on the ground. As for ASW, I acknowledge there isn't much substance there, but I like to see how bad the damage is, especially when I'm the one firing depth charges. I still won't know for sure if I sank the sub, but seeing that the # of hits is DIRECT or simply some Near Misses makes a difference in my mind.
@Rayrard3 ай бұрын
Amazing how you can kick the crap out of him in Pegu/Moulmein yet he still manages to get poorly or unopposed naval strikes at your Royal Navy ships. It's almost like we are roleplaying a IJN/IJA rivalry where the RAF won't help out their naval brethren. I can't see how you couldn't just slaughter those naval bombers by running them under CAP from Prome or Rangoon set at 100% where you have dozens of planes and it would be easy to break up or destroy the Betty/Nell formations. Instead you get the RN slaughtered for like the 3rd or 4th time in the game to the SAME Japanese bombers you know are there.
@gillynt3 ай бұрын
Yeah, I thought the CAP was better set for this RN run, but then one misstep with lack of waypoints for the return journey put them just one hex out of Ground LR-CAP range. I know what you're saying about the SAME Japanese bombers, but I was expecting a slightly different result. One due to LB-CAP and another due to Full Speed, not realizing there was a CV presence, and the aforementioned range issue. Overall it was definitely something I was willing to do, just expected different results due to better planning. Implementation of the planning is where it fell apart (and also his sneaky CVs).
