See, this is why I don't like the theory that Ted is the secret villain of the show, because he recontexualizes everything that happens in his favor, due to it being from his perspective. The show goes out of its way to show that Ted is a reliable narrator, because it exaggerates the times where he is being an _unreliable narrator_ like in this scene. Or maybe even the scene with the Goat. The truth is, if Ted were really recanting the events of the story in a way that intentionally made himself look good...there would never be a moment where Ted looked bad; and there were plenty of times where he admitted where he was wrong and looked bad. So yeah, for the most part, Ted isn't manipulating the story to make himself look like the Hero or the Victim while secretly being the Villain - shit is happening to him in an incredibly contrived way, and he has the right to react to it the way he does.
