YNAB can be better utilized to get a month ahead. This makes it significantly more complicated than it actually is utilizing YNAB. Watch the YNAB videos on getting a month ahead.😉

Hello. Thank you for your video and explanations. It's very clear. That said, could you explain why a credit card car be in red in the payment collumn ? I tried to understand YNAB support database, but it's not easy. It seems that it's when you've spent more than you had available in cash and credit... so, for instance, my numbers are at zero (grey ich) in the payment collumn the current month, but if I check the coming month, it's in red, with a negative amount. I don't get it. Thank you.

Do I also need to budget for the spending categories where I used my credit card to make purchases? If I budget this way, will it result in duplicate entries for budgeting? (I will also budget for the credit card payment) In your example, $30 was spent at McDonald's, and the Chase card activity increased by $30, but do I need to assign money to the Fun Money category? If I assign $30 to Fun Money, and later assign another $30 to the Chase card payment, wouldn't that be duplicate? If I don't assign $30 to Fun Money, is it okay for that category to show yellow or red? In case I need to budget for the spending category, and the same category contains both credit card spending and cash spending, how can I separate them out? I'm really confused about this part, but I use my credit card for shopping all the time, so I definitely need to figure this out clearly. Thank you

Hi Kamika! Great video. I’m an avid YNAB-er too! A tip for the transactions that haven’t cleared yet is to manually enter them in YNAB. Then you can still count them towards March and/or get an accurate view of how much left in the category you’re working with. Once it clears the transactions will match up in the register so it won’t double count!

Thanks for sharing! I enter the transactions manually sometimes, but it usually doesn't bother me since I'm aware that they are pending.

I see you have a ‘once per year’ category - can you share how that is set up? Is it a ‘eventually’ savings fund or a ‘pay x per month’ target? I do this by transferring £200 pm to my wife and she has a dedicated account for those, so looking at alternatives
@WellBalancedWallet

Good question! This category is only for things that we pay for once per year like YNAB, car registrations, Amazon Prime, etc. I tend to forget about those bills since they only come out one time a year. My solution is to keep $500 in this category. When the payment comes out, I don’t have to worry about not having the money for it. Then the next month I work on replenishing the money. None of my once per year bills equal more than $500 at once time, so this works out perfectly.

I just finished reading The Housemaid’s Secret by Frieda McFadden. When you were talking about The Girl’s Weekend and said “This book is so messy.” I paused, added it to my Want To Read list and skipped to the next chapter of the video so I didn’t hear any spoilers. 😂 I love mess! Now let me continue listening to this video. By the way I recommend Housemaid by Frieda McFadden. The sequel which I just finished sucks but the first book was good.

Thank you for this, very helpful! I have a question though, and that's what I have been struggling the most with handling credit cards in YNAB. Hope this makes sense: I have my planning of how much I can spend monthly with my credit card, considering my revenues. The thing is, I just get paid at the end of every month, so when I get paid I use the money to pay my current statement. And then I have "no money" until my salary date again, but that's not a problem because I have my budget so I know how much I can spend on my credit card. But the fact that I receive the money only after I make my purchases does not allow me to assign money to my categories, so the whole month looks like I am in debt and everything is red. Do you have any suggestions on how I could handle this? Thank you again :)
@WellBalancedWallet
@WellBalancedWallet 5 ай бұрын
Hi Rebecca! Congratulations on paying off your card every month. It sounds like you’re a month behind instead of a month ahead. YNAB wants you to use your credit card like a debit card and only spend money that you currently have in your possession. My suggestion is to get your bank account current so that you have the funds to spend from your credit card. You can do this by saving as much money as possible until you’re able to actually budget your money then spend instead of spending it before you get it.

If I assign to expenses category and credit payment at the same time, will it create duplicate entries? How should I assign if I use a credit card for spending?
@WellBalancedWallet
@WellBalancedWallet 5 ай бұрын
If you use your credit card as a debit card, enter the transactions into the proper categories. YNAB will move the money to the credit card payment category automatically.
@waschosen-
@waschosen- 5 ай бұрын
@@WellBalancedWallet Thank you. What I mean is, if I spent $100 on food using a credit card, do I need to enter $100 in the food column when assigning budgets, and then another $100 in the credit card payment column? This seems like it would create duplicate entries? Just because i would like to reserve money to settle the credit card $100, and probably i also need to budget the expenses.
@WellBalancedWallet
@WellBalancedWallet 5 ай бұрын
@waschosen- No, you just enter it once in the food category using the credit card account in your budget. YNAB takes care of the rest. When you enter the transaction, you can go back to the budget page and notice that the money is available in the credit card payment category. YNAB does that automatically. When you get ready to pay your bill, use the credit card payment category to see the amount to pay.
@waschosen-
@waschosen- 5 ай бұрын
In fact, installment payment is not possible. Firstly, outstanding balances will accrue interest, causing the total amount to keep changing. Also, unless you decide to permanently stop using this credit card, it is unlikely to use it continuously while repaying in installments.
@WellBalancedWallet
@WellBalancedWallet 5 ай бұрын
You are correct. The goal with YNAB is to use your credit card like you would a debit card. Sometimes things happen though and people may not have a choice. Hopefully, they are only paying the minimum balance for a short period of time, and can stop using the card while they work on paying down the balance.
