Great video! How thick were those construction screws? I went to the store and found #8, #9, #10, etc

Thank you, I’m glad you enjoyed them. The 2.5” screws were #9 and the 1.25” screws were #8.

Curious, how much weight the roof can carry, is it safe or bad to use the wall stud for support instead of roof. I am plannnig to have an angled (45 degree) support to wall studs.

This was definitely a concern, especially when I put the storage rails up. But after some research, my ceiling is rated to hold more weight because there is a second floor above it. Ceilings with a roof above it cannot hold as much weight as the framing is designed to hold what is needed. I’d recommend doing research on how much weight your specific ceiling might be able to hold based off of what’s above it. Good luck with your project!

Good idea. I am in need of making shelves in my garage to clean up floor space. Too many options in my head right now. Also want to use what I have too.

Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed it. I also don’t like clutter on the floor. Check out some of my other videos, I built other storage shelves/racks to declutter.

Thank you for the video I’m gonna make a cubicle with smaller gabs and I was trying to figure out how to hang it on the wall. Thank you.

You’re welcome 😊 I ended up putting books in one of the bottom cubes and the shelving started to separate in the middle because of the weight. I used another 2x2 that I could slide into a bottom cube (sits on the bottom shelf). Anchored that to the wall and then screwed the bottom of the shelf up into it. That prevented any further separation. The books hide the 2x2

How wide are the joists? Are the joists parallel or perpendicular to the rails?
@DIYdilly

The joists are 5 inches and they are running perpendicular to the rails.

Wood is not strong in tension. Replace vertical boards with threaded rods. Replace board screwed to ceiling with unistrut. Feel free to put a LOT of weight on shelves built like that.

how much weight my ceiling can hold? I was planning to have 45 degree connection to vertical wall studs, instead of connecting to the roof.

@SunnySunny-lr8zg my ceiling is 2x10s and I'm engaged with probably 20 of them. A lot.

@@MeltingRubberZ28 Sorry, I was not trying to challenge your observation, I am trying to learn, as I am planning to do this on this summer. The garage is finished, other than using a stud finder, I dont have much option to see how is the roof?

@SunnySunny-lr8zg can you get into the attic and measure the size of the beams?

Good, but I have to point out that flip flops as a work shoe is bad enough, but your son has no shoes on. He gets a blast of sawdust in his eyes at 3:28, but I'm just as concerned about you or him getting splinters in your feet or stepping into the circ saw blade. You could have made this an educational experience for your son by giving him some safety glasses and ear protection, as well as shoes. And maybe give your younger son some safety glasses too, so he wouldn't get poked in the eye by his big brother's sword. 🙂

Yes, OSHA would have a field day with me and once I started editing I realized the things you called out as well. I appreciate the words of advice and will look into doing those when he hangs out with me on my next project.
