A dozen or more years ago, I caught the train to Canberra. My wife and our young son had driven down a couple of days earlier but I had some work to attend to. While I could have flown, I thought I'd give the train a try. That one trip was enough to say never again. While the train was comfortable and pretty punctual, the reasonably short journey just took forever. An equivalent journey in Europe would have been about half the time.

Yes, I think that’s right - this was by far the slowest way to get to Sydney where in the UK or Germany, the train is (mostly) the fastest method over 1-2 hour routes.

I've been to Dubrovnik twice in October and September and I love it but there is a reason why the hotels keep a list at reception of when the cruise ships are landing - it's because they make Old Town a living hell hole! Any other day you can see one end of Stradun from the other and it's lovely. If I go on a Virgin Voyage I'll be hoping on the bus to Lapad beach instead.

Very smart alternative! I’ve been lucky enough to visit Dubrovnik outside of the cruise season and had no such issues.

Great review, thanks. Do you remember if there was enough room to take a large suitcase on board and leave it at the end of the carriage (as the limit for checked bags is 20kg and ours are heavier as going on a cruise from Sydney.)
@PlanetPatrick
@PlanetPatrick 11 күн бұрын
I'm pretty certain there was a storage area for luggage at the end of the carriage. I was only in the first class end (which I think is what you mean) and nobody showed any interest in the weight of my luggage. I certainly didn't ask anyone's opinion at the station!!

I've flown with them maybe 4-5 times internationally and 4-5 times domestically. I've had a mixed experience. I've found the staff to be quite crabby and snippy on more than one occasion. But on other times (particularly the Vancouver - Narita/Osaka route) I've found the staff to be quite pleasant. Thankfully my luggage has never been lost and I've never dealt with any major delays or other issues. However, my father and mother booked business class seats together to Bahamas and they changed my father's seat randomly so now they are separated.

Air Canada is the worst slavery Airline of the World. I have decided to bring this Out because until now, our tickets have Not been returned. They are even charging us cancelation fee whereas,they denied us boarding for flimsy excuse. We booked a flight through Expedia in April 2024. I tried to get requirements on the Canadian Embassy Website, it was so complicated. Then i decided to call Air Canada directly on their customers service Line. I spoke with a staff who checked our passports and told me that we dont need to get a transit visa. Thereafter, 48h to the flight, i still went on Air Canada to do the Check-in. I was directed to get a transit visa through Sherpa. Which i bought. It was a shock to be denied boarding!. The flight staff was even so rude to ask why we chose to fly via Toronto to the USA instead of directly. I need Justice. We had to book another expensive Ticket. I have been trying to get a refund since then, No headway

Nice review, thank you Patrick. I really find the BA Club Europe offering very disappointing. If only they had two seats across up front and a bit more leg room (like the old days?) Then it would start to feel exclusive. Personally I like the offering from City as the legroom on the Embraer is better. But again, not worth paying the premium for Club on that. Only tend to use it when the companion voucher gives you no alternative. The new Ryanair 737 Maxes have better legroom then these tired old BA A320s (let alone the noisy nasty little A319s) - and quieter to boot. The little bit extra to sit up front on one of those is worth it.
@PlanetPatrick
@PlanetPatrick 16 күн бұрын
Thank you for the comment. I had much better memories of BA Club Europe too. I agree, some of the more modern planes have better leg room in economy which is a bit embarrassing when such a premium is being paid in some European business class.
@yeager913
@yeager913 16 күн бұрын
@@PlanetPatrick Indeed! I wonder if anyone at BA actually bothers to try out the competition - i.e. the new Ryanair 737 Maxes - because (any residual safety concerns to one side) it's a more enjoyable product in many ways than the A320!

Hi Patrick, what was your rational behind selling the campervan?
@PlanetPatrick
@PlanetPatrick 25 күн бұрын
A few reasons: a. I saw the market starting to fall for camper vans post-pandemic and knew if I were to keep it, I'd need to keep it long term b. This was the wrong shape/size for me - a Sprinter size would have been easier to get into towns or park closer to towns. c. Apart from France and Germany, everywhere else has become expensive to park (in a place with facilities). Add that with diesel costs, and this is no longer an inexpensive way to travel.

Hello Patrick, that studio apt is very nicely appointed. I was wondering, does the need to be endlessly filming and editing what you see on your travels ever get to a point that it takes away from the joy of travelling at all? Or is travel so much your job that you don't think of it primarily in terms of personal enjoyment?
@PlanetPatrick
@PlanetPatrick Ай бұрын
Hi! That's a fair question. I'll answer in two parts. First, I don't film endlessly (at least, not any more). For this video, I was in the Algarve for 1 month, and filmed 3 short pieces over the month. Second, I went there in October 2022, and I'm only getting round to editing this short series of videos now. However, you're right that there is a LOT of work to share even this amount. I am always trying to balance video editing with writing on my blog, which has increased a lot. And to answer your final part, I don't travel quite as frequently as I did - yes, I'm on the road full time, but stay for longer. Right now I'm on a 2 month stay, with no filming at all :)

Walter Burley Griffin, Canberra's designer, included a suburban rail system with connections to Goulburn and Yass. You can Google it for more details. It was not built because of WW1 starting and resistance from bureaucrats who didn't want it. One of the main uses of the current route was to bring building supplies into Canberra. As time went on people lost interest in railways, and roads and airports dominated travel. As you probably noticed, much of the route follows slow winding tracks from the steam era. Making it faster has far less to do with the trains, than with the tracks. The delays just south of Greater Sydney is where the country tracks enter the suburban system. If the train is exactly on time there is a 'path' for it to follow between frequent suburban services smoothly into the city. If they are late and miss that path, it may be a while (typically about 15-20 minutes) before another is available.
