This video has changed my opinion of Moffo. I didn't like her voice for a long time. Maybe what I heard wasn't her most suitable role. Lucia sure is.

The Rosa Ponselle version is much faster and better. Neither singer is perfect here as its extraordinarily tricky and difficult, but Rosa Ponselle is superior. I think modern ears might prefer Callas and not the slightly more nasal approach that Ponselle adopts in the higher passages, but Callas is much too cautious and tepid. Ponselle sings so much more liberally and also is much LESS AFRAID of dipping into her chest voice than Callas, who had a love/hate relationship with her chest voice. For someone who attended a conservatory like Callas did, you might expect a bit better. Ponselle never attended a conservatory.

Una versión excelente, sin embargo considero que no debe hacer " calderones" en las notas PP. Es mejor no interrumpir el ritmo de la música.

Ben was with the Young Company at the Canadian Opera Company. I think it was in 1983 we did a Southern Ontario tour. He played Rudolfo in La Boheme and all of us stagehands said, "Wow, this guy is going to go places".

This is a lovely recording. Moffo certainly had a naturally beautiful voice. She came to Boston in the mid '70s to appear in Verdi's "Stiffelio." It was my understanding that this was late in her career.
