Not even close to a good reel 2 reel at 7 1/4 inches and some compact metal cassettes can sound better if well recorded. That deck is low end.

No, you don't necessarily need a 3 head deck to get good results with that Maxell UR, but a good deck with calibration facilities (at least bias adjustability) is essential and would definitely improve the performance of that UR.

the tascam is a pretty decent cassette player but for 8-track you really should have used in akai cr 81d or technics. I am a professional archivist and I use an Akai cr81d for sound demos for how good 8-track could be. you also would have benefited by replacing the splices before you even started recording and you didn't show the condition of the pressure pads of the 8-track. if you wanted to blow any 8 track out of the water use a nakamichi dragon cassette deck you can play back one of the earliest pre-recorded cassettes for the late sixties on my dragon and it sounds stunningly good.

I'd love to have a high-end 8-track machine. The format does have the potential for excellent sound, but sadly the cheap nature of most of the machines and quality of the tape stock ruined it for most people.

Can you perhaps mention what VHS player you used and whether the VHS has any sort of TBC on-board? I understood that the BMIP isn't good at managing unstable (non-TBC) signals?

I've used a professional JVC editing deck and also a standard Panasonic consumer VCR with it and it seems to do fine without a TBC.

Bigger problem I remember with 8-track was track azimuth. One manufactured cart sounded fine, but another had cross-talk. Some of the final players had fine-tuning knob, but it was already too late for the format. A variation of this cartridge continued to be used in broadcast. They didn't try to jam on eight tracks, so the sound quality was perfectly acceptable.
@bdwatkins2001
@bdwatkins2001 Күн бұрын
there were two or three eight-track decks that had a locking track change mechanism that you would set it and then lock it down and it would not go out of adjustment

Dolby NR has always sucked for the average home user. Prosumers might have made decent use of it in limited circumstances, but In my mind, it was mostly used as a marketing gimmick. The most important part to making a good cassette recording has always been having a good recording source, a clean, aligned and well working head and mech, and a VU with the ability to manually adjust the recording levels.

Yes, the Shaggs were truly horrible... they were also truly 10 years ahead of their time- not unlike the Fugs, the Sonics, the Velvets, MC5, the Stooges/Iggy and the Dolls! A full decade after the failure of their debut there were bands in England who took what the Shaggs started and brought it to the Euro Top 40 (as well as developing small-but-loyal American cult followings): the Raincoats, Kleenix (aka Lilliput), the Slits, Delta 5 and Essential Logic...

That's true. VHS Hi-Fi audio is really PCM audio that is recorded on the tape using FM carrier. The best results for dynamic range are only achieved on a machine like yours or one that have manual levels for recording. Newer and lower end VCRs don't have those pots for the Left and Right channel recording level ajust and they use ALC (Automatic Level Control) so the recording level vary according to the level of the input resulting on a even recording so on a quiet part of the recording the machine automatically increase the gain and vice-versa for the louder parts and you loose the dynamic of the recording that should "respect" the quiet part and the louder part of a song for instance. So the best recordings are those made on machines that you can set the recording level and this allow the recording to be more like the original input signal.

Yep, the expansion slot was never used in north America. The closest thing to an actual expansion product was a prototype lottery ticket machine made in the USA. I believe it was somewhere in the north west but i could be wrong. The idea of the add-on was so you could buy you lottery tickets at home, but because this was a "childs device" it didn't get developed further. If someone here knows I am wrong please correct me, I read about this years ago.

The NES was a very cheap and cost reduced system from the first day (even more than the Gameboy). But what was made from it with perfect programming is a masterpiece until today. But the same holds up for the Atari 2600. It's even more impressive, what was squeezed out of it, especially with this tiny "RAM".

My 2 cents: there’s hardly any point in discussing whether this is “good” or “bad”. It’s gonna hit some people like sour milk and others like a beam of light from God. What I find fascinating is how the vocals can be so together yet so detached from the rhythm. That would be a brain exercise for any skilled musician to pull off, and they did it by accident? Fascinating. Also, if I can extract the melody from the music, and even extract the lyrics from the melody, i find something that reminds me of sacred harp music. I find it no more “listenable” than some John Cage or Ornette Colman(again, only comparing how “sonorous” or “listenable” it is, not their commitments to their art, genius concepts, or intention, just the final result), and I love and respect both Cage and Coleman. Feels like something to be shared for the sheer amusement and wonder at how such a music could have come to pass.
