Also, I liked this song before but I absolutely fell in love with it after hearing the band's acoustic version from the Attic Sessions, just as whiny sounding but rawer

YOOOO, O-POSITIVE GANG RISE UP. I was literally thinking, "oh, the anti-Capitalism songs come later" aND THEN YOU DID THE THING. M'kay, before I begin proper I must touch on the "midwest emo sound." So, obviously, you and I are fans of that oh-so-delicious whine that seems to rub others the wrong way about this genre of music. And honestly, I never really understood it that well - like, sure, most vocalists in the scene (and punk and it's many subgenres, for that matter) aren't traditionally GOOD singers (but I wouldn't call them outright *bad* either) and that's kind of the appeal? It's the emotional damage these songs deal that are the draw. Then I ran into The World Is A Beautiful Place & I Am No Longer Afraid To Die. Like... no shade to the band or people who are heavy on their music, but after I listened to a few of their songs, I went "ohhh... okay, this is what my music sounds like to people who aren't into midwest emo." (For the record, I like their songs Fightboat and Gig Life.) ANYWAYS. It's funny - I've always thought of the line "what the fuck did I do?" as accusatory due to the way Tades says it in the song itself. It comes across, to me, as a defensive response to some perceived slight by the other party but the way you explained it not only makes a lot more sense with the context of the rest of the song, I like it a lot more :) I've always wondered what's worse: a sharp and painful ending to a relationship (such as being cheated on) or a slow fizzle out, realizing that you and your partner just aren't right for each other anymore. Real talk, you've genuinely given me a lot more appreciation for this EP over the course of this little series. As you might have guessed from my story about Jimmy Neutron, I kind of have a hard time with interpersonal relationships and just... uh. Yeah. Shit's rough lmao. I've spent a lot of time asking myself that same very question: what the fuck did I do? Thank you so much for these videos, I really do hope you're able to see them through and beyond as more of Hot Mulligan's music comes out! Oh, and Fun Fact: the last time I heard them play this song was at the 2022 Ho-Ho-Ho-Hot Mulligan show. I believe Tades said something along the lines of, "fuck, I wrote this song back when I was still a lumberjack!"
@HotMulligAnalysisАй бұрын
Yo waddup dude. I do think that the "what the fuck did I do" can also be read as accusatory, even if I prefer the other interpretation. I think that's part of why I like the line so much. I'm glad these have gotten you more into the EP, its their most underrated project if you ask me. I've def gotten a much greater appreciation for them by doing this. One day I'll make it out to a Ho-Ho-Hot Mulligan show I swear. I def plan on continuing the videos we'll just see how far apart each video comes out. Gotta find a new recording spot

I kid, I kid, this video was 100% worth the wait - thank you so much for doing this. Your analysis videos are always a treat! Especially wonderful to see one of my favorite Hot Mulligan songs covered, now if onlY I COULD SEE IT IN CONCERT AHHHH. I really hope you only see more success as you do these, which I think you will. I think once you hit Pilot (I know, so far away, phew), you'll really get bigger numbers on these videos since that's where Hot Mulligan's own career really took off and where most people start with their music. Now to wait for the I Fell In Love With Princess Peach video...
@HotMulligAnalysis2 ай бұрын
Thank you dude! I appreciate all the support, I enjoy doing this by itself but its good to know other people can enjoy it. Yea after going through all these old songs it really makes me want to see them in concert one day, but we'll see. I have a feeling if I get to stuff like Pilot and you'll be fine more people will be interested, but I'm good to get there slowly. I enjoy making these a ton, sometimes it just takes time to want to get back to it. I'm glad you enjoyed it though, like I said, I never gave a second thought to this song before this and now it might just be one of my top 5 or top 10 Hot Mulligan songs ever. It's so good. I Fell In Love With Princess Peach will be awesome, gotta get through the behemoth of Opportunities first though, which will be fun for its own reasons, but long compared to these EPs I've been doing.

Honestly, I bet this guys carbine monoxide that he releases in every breath tastes better than anything I’ve ever tasted. I am totally aghast. This guy is wrong. Being a kid sucked so much ass. I still live at home, but id take being 22 over being any age under 18 any day. Being a kid has 0 redeeming qualities. Life as an adult can really suck, but at least you have moments of profound good vibes that a kid just never gets to experience. For example: genuine connections with other humans, or Seeing or experiencing beautiful things that you would never be able to fully appreciate as a kid. I stood at the edge of a canyon in arkansas last year and wanted to cry at how beautiful it was, no kid feels a vista that hard. I had a deep and serious conversation about marriage with my ex girlfriend, kids just larp shit like that. People shake my hand when they meet me and look me in the eye in a way that lets me know they regard me as an equal, which is something i never experienced until i was 21. Being a kid was so shitty. Great video though
@HotMulligAnalysis2 ай бұрын
I actually really appreciate this comment. I was lucky enough to have had a childhood I look back on fondly, but I do think it's a common trap that some people (and especially midwest emo lyricists) fall into where they look back on childhood and times gone by with heavily rose-tinted glasses. The fact is you're right, there's so much more freedom and rich experiences to have as an adult, and I think while nostalgia and memory have their place, they can also limit what you let yourself experience in the present if you don't keep them in check. That's part of what the song Visited Salmon, I Mean Transit Balcony is about, to me at least. My point is I think your take is a good one, to acknowledge that adult life comes with its own set of problems but that the independence, maturity, emotions and choices that come with it make it a wonderful thing.

I don’t remember which interview it was, but I’m pretty sure I remember hearing Chris saying that he played drums on Fenton and Honest and Cunning. He only moved to guitar because he couldn’t find anyone who could play it the way he wanted for songs and it made more sense with him singing quite a bit
@HotMulligAnalysis2 ай бұрын
I think I know the interview you're talking about. It might be the same one I mentioned in Visited Salmon where he said Fenton was originally supposed to be the only songs they put out. Makes the drums even cooler considering right after the big drum part he goes into solo scream singing.

Should've gone with Marlboro Smooth 100's - menthol is a lot easier on the throat than regular cigarette. (I've been smoking on and off for years, MOSTLY and currently off.) I'm really digging these analysis videos, my dude. I am also SUPER bad at analyzing and dissecting media so I'm kinda glad I'm not the only one who struggles with it and it's cool to see you put yourself out there to try and do it anyways! I'll admit, Honest & Cunning was one of the EPs I'd skip the most when I was just getting into Hot Mulligan but as time has gone on, it's become one of my favorites of theirs - I'm super into that sadboi "I miss you/long for you" self-loathing shit, what can I say? Jimmy Neutron is easily in my top 5 Hot Mulligan songs and might even just outright be my favorite, depending on what day you ask me. Really looking forward to that song break down btdubs!

I'll make a deal with you, if I somehow keep doing this all the way to the song And I Smoke from WWIW, I'll repeat the same bit with menthols. I appreciate it dude, I love these songs and I really wanted to do this to hear other's thoughts on them. Jimmy Neutron has always gone under the radar for me, but each time I make one of these I end up loving the song way more so I think it'll be the same. What do you think it is about Jimmy Neutron in particular that makes it a contender for your favorite? I'm always curious to hear what the songs mean to other people.

i wanted to hear what other people think about some mully lyrics and this is awesome! keep on enjoying your work. only your interpretation of 12:07 doesn't sit with me - i don't think she doesn't see him as human after some outbursts. i think she does, but he doesn't see himself as human due to self-deprecation, of that i'm sure. but then what does the lyric mean in total? i can't figure it out.
@HotMulligAnalysis3 ай бұрын
I appreciate it dude! I love hearing other people's thoughts on the songs, that's kinda the whole reason I wanted to make these videos. I honestly can totally see where you're coming from. I 100% agree that him claiming that she doesn't see him as human is due to his own self degradation. I think part of why I love the song so much is the fact that all of the lyrics are spoken from his perspective about a situation/event/breakup that we as the audience didn't get to see. So everything we learn about it is filtered through his own thoughts and feelings. It kind of makes him an unreliable narrator. So yea, I don't think there's actually a way for us to know whether she thinks of him as less than human or not, but we know that he thinks she does, or that she ought to, which is what's important. It really shows us rather than tells us what his mental state and self image is, and how it leads to this cycle of shitty situations making him feel worse about himself, and due to him feeling worse he finds a way to blame ever shitty situation on himself (like the lyric from This Song is Called Its Called Whats It Called "what way to end the perfect day if not finding what to blame on myself). In terms of the meaning of the whole lyric, I think its a bit more vague. Maybe he says "what will it take" because he's trying to come up with some action, some string of words he can say that will fix everything? He's been trying fireworks and guitar, but he feels like this is all his fault, so he has to try to fix it, even though things aren't that simple. That's my immediate thoughts I guess. Super curious if you've heard any other angles or what ideas you have. Thanks for watching dude 👍
