What was the reason for replacing the injector(s)? have a misfire and plugs and coils haven’t fixed the problem
@Hillbillygarage1215

It is the next step in the diagnostic process. It is possible to swap injectors to see if the problem moves but you would need some o-rings on hand incase one were to get damaged during the swap.

Who doesn't love AFM engines? One thing that can happen with Hemi lifter/cam failure is wallering of the lifter bores. Inspect them each, one by one, very carefully. Nothing is gained when the bloody bores are shot and make noise. Thorough gallery cleaning is paramount. Next order of business, AFM delete with PCM update to match. I hate seeing AFM failure. Pennzoil especiale!! 25,000 mile oil changes and piss poor oil quality.

You are so right, careful inspection and 100% cleaning is absolutely important. Fortunately we have been lucky to find no damage to the bores and block. I always pull all the block plugs out and completely wash and flush every passageway in every engine I do. I am thankful you stopped by Hillbilly Garage, and I look forward to you coming back often. Im having the same issue with my 4th gen Ram 1500 (cylinder 8 misfire only when I’m in high passing gear) runs fine any other time. So, since I have to replace the cam and lifters, and the labor will be the same, Im upgrading to a stage 2 cam and lifters, with open headers. Might do a MDS delete too. This VVT MDS idea on a potentially powerful 5.7 was stupid in my opinion. I miss the days when vehicles were made 100% in America, we were getting solid engines that was way easier to work on. But anyway, I’m digging the videos.
@Hillbillygarage1215
@Hillbillygarage1215 15 күн бұрын
I had the exact same deal in the beginning stages of the problem. My guess is your cam lobe is in the process of being wiped out. Best wishes on the repair. The MDS delete is a great idea.
@Hillbillygarage1215
@Hillbillygarage1215 15 күн бұрын
Just me talkin but I like the VVT for street applications. It gives you a better power swing when you need it. The variation can be locked out or limited with install kits so you have options. The MDS, Yes get rid of it. It seems to be fine in my 5.7 but I hate it in my 6.4. I will at some point get it turned off in Ol' Red because it irritates me when I'm cruising.
@Hillbillygarage1215

Question: Are you gonna do the cam swap in the vehicle or pull the engine? Also have you checked out a cam for a 6.4 engine with a manual trans behind it? That is a viable cam swap option.
@TheStudderman
@TheStudderman 12 күн бұрын
@@Hillbillygarage1215my intentions are while the top end is open, have a MDS delete kit, and at the same time, install a stage 2 cam. Also, Install a Melling high (or hellcat) volume oil by pump (whichever one is better), so while at idle theres enough oil going to the lifters and so on. Then remote retune so it can operate with said stage 2 cam, so I can get the aggressive hemi chop that comes with the cam, not to mention the added 80ish HP. I wonder if I live near you. I’ll have you do it. Im In central Maryland, where about are you?

Now that you say that I am really scratching my head. You are probably right. They told me they tried to start it after pulling it out of the creek. That one twisted rod really had the motor bound so I really don't know how and when all the damage happened. I'm just thankful the crank survived.

I’m a new subscriber and I love the videos! I have a 2003 Hemi Ram 2500 that I need to do the valve seals on since it will smoke for a second if it’s been idling to long and it has 240,000 miles. It’s runs perfect and no ticking noises so I’m wondering if I should just pull the heads while it’s in the truck or do you recommend pulling the whole motor? I only drive the truck on weekends and do about 3000 miles a year. I did plan on changing timing chain and water pump while I was at it. I’ve owned it for 10 years with no plans to sell. Thanks for any advice.
@Hillbillygarage1215
@Hillbillygarage1215 28 күн бұрын
@arpjeff this is a tough one to answer but here we go. First, I am a firm believer in "if it broke don't fix it" There is a tool on HEMItools.com for changing valve guide seals in the vehicle. Second, if you feel your "spidey sense" telling you the timing chain needs replaced then go with your gut. The water pump does not have to come off the cover to get to the timing set so that lets you decide yeh or new on the water pump. If you have been diligent with your oil changes (5000 miles or less / every 6 months) then the internals should be fine. Other side of that with the oil leak/burning issue inspecting the rings wouldn't be a terrible idea. BUT if you have the pistons out to inspect then a dingle ball cross hatch and fresh rings is a "while I'm her, why not" kinda thing. Keep in mind though, rod bolts are torque to yeild and MUST be replaced. Here we go with the domino effect You are so close to having the crank out, why not inspect the bearings? Bearings ain't very expensive so why not throw in a new set? Let's go ahead and do a shoe string polish on that crank since it's out. Since the oil pump is off, why not get a Melling high volume pump to go back in it? Now if you have good oil pressure before the tear down then that is not necessary but it is what I would do because I like high volume oil. Sorry I don't have one straight answer but a valve guide seal change and a timing set change is perfectly doable in the truck.
@davidphillips3953
@davidphillips3953 Ай бұрын
MDS did not cause that. The side to side play is normal. The problem is the updated roller bearing they came out with in 2009. It is not an oiling issue at all. It is not a soft cam issue either, try rolling the other 15 lifters on a piece of glass and you will hear some of them not rolling smooth but not yet eating the cam, one the roller stood then the lobe gets eaten.
@Hillbillygarage1215
@Hillbillygarage1215 Ай бұрын
I agree with you about the MDS. Number 8 is where we lost the lifter. I am on the fence on the oiling issues. Granted lifters fail in many locations but #8, being tucked in the end, might get less splash than in the middle of the motor. High idle and lower oil pressures seem to be consistent with lifter failure. So I just don't know what to think. Thank you for visiting Hillbilly Garage and please keep coming back.

How damage can bearing be before you have to replace it ?
@Hillbillygarage1215
@Hillbillygarage1215 Ай бұрын
The short answer is not very much. Any loss of bearing surface opens the tolerance and reduces oil circulation. The long answer, Visually if you see differences in colors multiple scratches and/or grooves or any miss-shaping then they should be changed. If you can catch anything with your fingernail they should be changed. Especially important if there is scratches and grooves the bigger issue of the trash circulating in the oil must be cleaned.

I don't know how far you got with that engine build yet and I'm not telling you what to do but if it's still not assembled you might want to check that crank shaft for straightness. Set the crank in with the two outer main bearings in place without the caps then set your little handy dandy dial indicator up onto the center main of the crank shaft. Then slowly rotate the crank and take a reading. If it's not true bring the high spot up then tunk the web of the crank with a small sledge hammer and the recheck. That isn't coming to have an out of round crank with a V8 more common with straight 6 crank shafts but it's always good to check that especially seeing you spotted crappie machine shop work

Actually, I do not think the clocking would result in single digit pressure. Worn bearings would certainly cause lower pressure, but new bearings and good tolerance should still hold pressure. The clocking is mostly for better/longer oiling of the cam shaft. Are you working on a 5.7 or 6.4? Is this a complete build, all new bearings? Did the cam thrust plate bolts get torqued with thread locker? Did you upgrade the oil pump to Melling HV or Hellcat pump? Did you put a new o-ring on the oil pick-up tube? Side note: Hasting and Clevite are both quality bearings. I used Dura-bond in my HEMI.

Are you saying it is hesitating at start up everytime or every morning or something like that? Pulling the fuse and running the engine until it quits is only to reduce pressure in the fuel rail and minimize spray and mess after pulling the old injectors out. If you are experiencing hard starts regularly after the new injectors, my first thought would be an air leak past an o-ring.

So I put some non name brand injectors in my 2012 charger rt with a 5.7 hemi . And after I did that it started to hesitate then fires up do you think I need to change them by getting some new ones and this time take the fuel pump fuse or relay out and turn the car on so all the gas drains into the tank and out of the fuel rail and my problem will be solved.
