That's actually the hardest way to climb it. If you just keep your hands and feet in the middle of the rungs as you climb it is MUCH easier. Which is why he can literally WALK up it without hands. Because he stays in the middle

I was a kid when I tried this at the Rowan County Fair. It was called "Jacob's Ladder." The guy would demonstrate how it's done, then he'd hold the ladder still so you could balance yourself. If you could reach the prize board, where the prizes were fastened with clothes pins, you had to touch the one you wanted. There were $50 dollar bills and $100 dollar bills on the board.

It’s not really a secret... It really boils down to if you already have exceptional balance or a lot of experience.

Notice how he does it differently the first time. Notice how there's a jumpcut, and they never show the ends of the ladder when he's "showing the secret". These guys work there, it's their job to scam you. The ladder is only connected in one point on both ends, so it's basically walking on a tight rope, so you have to treat it as one. Grabbing the sides only makes the balance worse.
