Did alot of this stuff 30 odd years ago when i was an apprentice in horticulture. We were installing gabiens every 30 or so meters in seadonal water gullies around 2 to 4 meters deep. We had "cages" made of tennis type fencing that we filled with rock and stacked on top of and beside eachother to create a barrier to slow water flow. After 3 years id gone back to have a squizz at how they worked and that entire gully system was then a permanent creek with green growth spreading out to the 50 meter mark surrounding the gully system. This is southern nsw not far from canberra. I honestly thought it was going to become standard practice back then. Im surprised to see the concept being spoken of as a new practice on a few yt channels and on the ABC. For best results it should be rock and other materials at a minimum 1 meter thick and be just higher than the existing banks as it will settle and sink somewhat. It needs to be done at a few intervals to account for heavy storms than can washout some of the wiers. Theres no real results to see for at least 2 seasons.

25k for double glazed windows for supposed energy efficiency government green tape baloney - and people wonder why housing is so expensive more and more stars for supposedly nice to have blah blah a bureaucrat to tick boxes - probably double price due to double glazing over normal windows? that's a lot of power to burn to make up that saving especially when people put solar on anyway these days. I did a relocatable house in mid 2010s and if I didn't have a fan on the back porch ceiling I would have had to rip out all the existing windows and double glaze - even though the old 1950s house didn't have any floor, wall and bugger all roof insulation (as got trucked in 200km away) but yeah force the new home owner extra spend on replacing windows for energy efficiency for a house that is marginally different to outside temp in Queensland. I believe the 6 to 7 start requirement adds another 30K to new house builds now and there's no stopping those stars. You can't buy a basic home package for land without spending $300K these days and the home package is extremely basic with imported fixtures and fittings not the fancy European stuff either!

Great roundup guys this is just what info would be offgridder people need, FYI for anyone else wind generation isn’t worth it as opposed to solar, having said that there is a company in the USA that looks promising “Harmony wind turbines” 12 volt systems require larger conductor cables, 48 volt can run smaller gauge cable. We installed a ongrid service up around your hill back in the day, standard transformer is a 10kv single phase (SWRE) single wire return earth, I can agree totally it’s not cheap because you can’t auger granite and running overhead conductors up that sort of country isn’t easy. Living Offgrid is a great journey and gives you perspective of how we all should look at life i recon. The meaning Depth of discharge is how much you battery percentage would be say in the morning without any charge going into them. State of charge is what percentage your batteries are charged say from zero to 100%

These days you can buy solar panels that have their own micro inverter screwed to the back of the panel. Some have a dual micro inverter in a single housing. There a great benefits to that. Basically each individual panel has its own AC voltage output that is common in your area. Either 240 volt or 110 volt. The micro inverters last much longer, and you get a much longer warranty because they do not have to deal with high currents like a regular inverter does. The micro inverters are located outside, so there is less fire hazard. Each panel has its own micro inverter so it does not effect the entire system if a single panel gets less sunshine. You can add additional panels to your system or replace broken panels with panels from any brand because it doesn't matter since they all have the same AC output from their own micro inverter. The micro inverters are more efficient, and because their output is AC there are less losses due to resistance in the power cables. And it is much easier and much cheaper to connect all the panels with regular 240 volt or 110 volt power cables instead of having to use very expensive high current DC cables and connectors and fuse boxes and what not. And each micro inverter can be monitored with an app on your phone, so you can monitor the state and output of each individual panel at every single moment in time, anywhere in the world. The panels with micro inverters are more expensive, but I think that it is cheaper in the long term. You pay less for additional hardware that you would need with traditional panels. You get more efficiency and functionality. It is easier to add or replace panels. And it is safer. And it will last longer with a much longer warranty. As always thanks for sharing your experiences. As time goes by technology improves. It is impossible to keep up with the latest and most modern technology since these type of systems are getting installed to last for decades. But I think that it is good to point out that the technology has changed and improved, and that it is getting cheaper as well. So for other people that might be a better and more feasible option. I hope that this bit of information was helpful. A huge 👍
@insAneTunA7 күн бұрын
In terms of wind power you might want to look into a man who has a company that is called Hurricane Windpower. He also has a YT channel with that name. I believe that his turbines produce up to 1000 watt, but it could be more. He also sells all the additional hardware such as inverters and all other sorts of off-grid products. And to me off-grid means no connection to any facilities that you have to pay for. Nobody can ever live completely off-grid because you are always reliant on something that is made with technology that was powered by the grid. For example I don't see people dig up their own metals to create electrical components so that they can build their own inverter from scratch. In fact 99,9% of the items that people own are made by the grid. 👍

Finances would be the biggest barrier, especially real estate prices. Farms have greatly increased in price over the last ten years or so. Even marginal or isolated properties now command big prices. This is the biggest barrier to buying a property in 2024. It’s basically impossible for someone starting out to buy a property when the first step on the property ladder could be $350k, a debt that could take decades to pay off.

Love your videos, just recently found your videos. I am trying to be self sufficient. I am on 25 acres in south east Queensland. I have water tanks, septic with seep away. Have solar feed into the grid. Haven’t paid any electricity bills for over a year. Very happy with my setup. I know that technically I am not off grid because I am still connected to the grid with my feed in system but I have bought a battery for standby that I can connect up my house with using a change over switch in case of blackouts. I have started a garden using a Hydroponic method, the water that I use in my hydroponic system doesn’t require any pumps as I have set up a float valve that works on a gravity feed system. It all seems to be working well. Good luck with your project.
