My Amazon leaf fish have quite a fair bit of fail hunt. What should I do ? I had already put live guppies and culled shrimp for them. Is there something wrong if some of them are always facing upwards
@tropicalfishlover23 күн бұрын
What do you mean by failed hunt? Do they try to catch the guppies but miss, or don´t they try at all? Normally Leaf fish stands with face down, so probably something not ok with them!? I had also problem when I bought my first group, of 6 only one survived! This fishspecies is always wildcaught, and often in a very bad condition due to long shipping and starvation and often carry intestinal parasites and other bacterial infections, due to bad handling and dirty water during transport! They need clean soft rainwater pH on the lower side 5-6 with low mineral content. Wildcaught specimens don´t like hard water, but my fry was slowly used to tapwater (pH7) as they grew up, but for the eggs to hatch and develop rainwater is a must! It´s a fish that should only be kept by experienced aquarists with knowledge of the biology of fishes! Definitely not for beginners! I have kept aquariumfish for more than 50 years and also studied Biology including Limnology at University for 4 years, and have many fishcatching trips to tropical countries so I have at least some knowledge! Some fish can be a challenge though, and I had to go through a lot of trials and errors, before I succeded to keep and breed my Leaf fish! Good Luck!

@@tropicalfishlover It tried to predate on a guppy but failed. I bought 3 of them. One of them managed to hunt my mosquito rasbora. I have tested my water parameter and it's around 6.4~6.8 PH level. I do agree that they might have already been in a very bad condition. In the end, I have lost 3 of them.

They are a beautiful underrated little fish, when kept in a school they don't disappoint and they would have to be one of the hardiest of aquarium fish once you have them in a setup, unfortunately when they are in the aquarium store they don't look much, but once you get them home they dance for hours.

Hello, very well done an expert you are. How do you sex these wonderful fsh ?
@tropicalfishloverАй бұрын
Very difficult to sex! Females get a rounder belly when ready to spawn. Males are slightly smaller and are more actively flaring their fins and opening their mouths against others, especially when near spawning. My males have all been grey in color, whilst females can be both grey and brown?

I didn't know that Pethia bandula was endangered. This species is easy to breed in aquaria, so it would lend itself to a captive breeding program, in country. The cost would be minimal, but given the fecundity of the species, the reward would be great.
@tropicalfishlover2 ай бұрын
Yes as easy to breed as normal Ruby barbs! kzbin.info/www/bejne/pnS4hGqfl62GfbM I think I read somewhere that they are breeding them in captivity on Sri Lanka and that they have started a new population in another stream, as the first locality is in a populated area with big risk of stream being destroyed and polluted!

@@tropicalfishlover What should you pay attention to when fish are spawning?
@tropicalfishlover2 ай бұрын
@@123vietnamm Feed them live food black worms redworms whatever you can find or frozen live food if you can`t find any live.Once female has a round and full of eggs belly they are ready! Male will tease the female to go into his cave where they will spawn. After spawning male will tend to the eggs alone and close the opening to the cave and stay in there for 2 weeks or so and guard the eggs, until they hatch . After fry has finished their yolk sack male opens up the cave opening again and they start to swim out of the cave, and finally the male leave the cave as well and starts to eat again. He now doesn´t care about the fry and will look upon them as food only! So best to breed them in a tank of their own, so male can be taken out when fry has left the cave!

What temperature did you spawn these at?
@jonlobello715111 ай бұрын
These are absolutely "cherry-cheerful" fish. A few years back I had A. nigripinnis Soriano strain. These were also fabulious fish, but, alas, they petered out on me and I could no longer get my eggs to hatch. I attributed this to inbreeding. Several people in both the Wisconsin and Michigan killi clubs got pairs, and trios from me, but I'm afraid these fish are gone by now. We need to set up a network to get different individuals from the same strain(s), to introduce new genetic material so we can quite losing these beautiful strains and keep them going. I know your viddeo is two years old, but if you still have these, I'd sure love to get some eggs from you. Of course we'd have to wait until spring time when the weather was warmer to send eggs.
