In football watching the other team warmup was at times intimidating! Can you imagine hearing these Band Jocks before you take the field?!!!!

Dude... They were just warming up for a competition later that night 😁 And the staff member who was directing is not allowed on the field. He was simply giving them all of his energy before the show to pump them up and incite them to give the best performance of their lives.

I was in my high school marching band, (and concert band), 1980-1985. Trumpet for 3 years. At the end of year 3, my junior year, the director asked me to switch to French Horn in the concert band. If you know brass, French Horn differs in many ways from most other brass instruments. I had a difficult time picking it up to a respectable level of play, it took all summer. When senior years band camp rolled around I packed my bags and my trumpet and got on the bus to camp. After arriving, before our first rehearsal, the director called me to the music room. When I walked in I lost my breath. There was no one in that room other than the director, assistant director and two drum majors. I thought I was in huge trouble and thought I was going to be sent home and removed from the marching band, but I had no idea why, I hadn’t done or said anything that would warrant that. What happened was the director placed a brand new instrument case on the table in front of me. He asks me to open it. What I saw on the inside of that case was an instrument that looked like a trumpet on steroids. I was told it was a marching band French Horn, the Frumpet. I believe now days that has been replaced by a mellophone. (pure guessing on my part) After I was acquainted with it for about an hour the director said, “We need 7 more trumpets to convert, you go and get 7 volunteers and be back here in an hour.” I did exactly that. At that point our brass section went from great to amazing. It was a great experience and I loved every second of it.

I think I probably liked sax before this, but looking back all these years later... I think hearing this live was a foundational moment for my taste in music and instrumentation. And this solo still blows me away.

To top it off, the audio is great for catching sections of the music that don't come out as much, yet still well blend with the rest of the corps!

I remember watching this live, I'm somewhere down there near the 35 yard line on the right hand side of this video. The energy of the music at 7:50 in person is indescribable, we were right in front of them. Crazy to think about looking back years later. I pray I am lucky enough to experience that feeling again one day.
