@@OutdoorMike we’ve been in the mid to upper 40s all of December here in Wyoming. That has hurt the trapping. We really need cold temperatures to get the animals moving and hungry.

How do you dispatch the critter without damaging the fur? Around here most guys use a .22 or a .17HMR in the ear hole.
@WalterVelasquez-b5x4 күн бұрын
Why not leave them be.😮
@OutdoorMike4 күн бұрын
@WalterVelasquez-b5x the predator populations need to be managed and kept in check. If this doesn't happen then they will start to wipe out the other animal populations(small game, birds and so on) then when they are out of food they start starving to death and or getting diseases and spreading diseases and dieing for that. I have seen this happen back East first hand with the fox population. They killed all the ground birds, like pheasants, grouse and turkey they had a population explosion then started getting mange and other diseases and were dieing in horrible ways. So remove some of the animals from the population helps keep it healthy.

How much u catch per location till u pull traps?
@OutdoorMike7 күн бұрын
@dimakharitonov9883 I usually spend about 2 weeks in an area before. Moving to a new location. These cats can travel a long long ways though. Also this spot is near a unit that we can't trap in so it repopulates very quickly from overflow from the other unit.

Hey Mike! Just received my catnip, and I’m trying to get my ducks in a row here. I should have asked before…is there certain ratio of nip to water? Like 2 to 1 or 5 water to 1 nip? Again I apologize for my ignorance and constant pestering! I do appreciate the help though!!!!!
@OutdoorMike8 күн бұрын
@derrickmcdonald7331 I don't really have a ratio. I just kind of eyeball it. I'd say maybe a cups worth of catnip in a 3-quart pot of water. It will make a pretty strong batch of lead in scent.

How sharp is your blade? I'm new to this and just got my first bobcat.
@OutdoorMike11 күн бұрын
@gh2outdoors975 I keep it as sharp as possible. A dull blade on your knife will result in holes in your hide during the skinning process. My fleshing knife is not as sharp. It has an edge but it's not like my skinning knife. That will come down to personal preference and lots of practice. During the fleshing process it is a feel sort of thing and that only comes with time and repetition. Learn how to do a baseball stitch to fix any holes that you might make as you learn.

New to cage trapping cats, so forgive my ignorance. Do you happen to have an exact recipe for this awesome concoction? I understand making a tea out of it, when adding it to your squirt bottle do you strain the catnip/silver vine leaves out of it to leave behind just the “tea”? Or do you allow the nip/vine particles in the liquid and bottle everything together? Again my apologies for the ignorance! Any help would be greatly appreciated!
@OutdoorMike11 күн бұрын
@@derrickmcdonald7331 I strain the catnip/silvervine out and just use the liquid.

Thank you!!! That helps a lot!!! I’ll sure give it a try! Is there a specific percentages of bc urine to nip liquid ratio?
@OutdoorMike11 күн бұрын
@derrickmcdonald7331 no I just add about a Oz or so. Also if you have any kind of citrus oil and some of it in a few drops goes a long way. Cats love citrus for some reason. Mostly from the orange variety.

Hi Mike! I’m really thankful that you have a video like this to inform others on how to keep furs clean. I am still stumbling on the cleaning part of my furs and I was hoping that you’d have the solution to my issue. I have a full fox pelt that needs some sort of cleaning because it smells awful… I’m assuming the smell is formaldehyde or of some sorts. It kinda smells like pickles and dust. A friend gave this to me about 8 years ago and I’m not sure where they got it from, but that smell has been there all this time. I’m thinking that the pelt is like a neck warmer because it has a clip underneath it’s mouth. I know that I probably shouldn’t submerge/wash the pelt since it’s already been cured and it most likely would not dry on the inside if I did. I desperately need some help on washing/cleaning to remove this scent. It’s stinking up everything that’s in the box and I sure can’t use it with that smell around my neck! Haha
@OutdoorMike15 күн бұрын
Honestly your best bet would be to consult a Tannery. They would most likely be able to tell you how to get it clean without wrecking your fur it will really come down to what method was used to tan it in the first place. They should be able to help you with that. Good luck. Hope you are able to get it cleaned up.
