What clay are you using? Low fire? High fire? Cone?

Kelsey, I watched a couple of your "how to fix" episodes. Just one question, are they intended to teach others how to fix issues they encounter? I guess what I am saying do you make those one off pieces intentionally? I am guessing yes. I am a novice potter in St. Louis and have already put your lessons into practice. Thanks so much.

I’ve been trying to teach myself to throw and I’ve been allowing my hands stay muddy when trying to pull, thinking I was supposed to use the slip/slurry to lubricate my hands while doing so... Am I wrong?
@Lemonmm2

I did this today and all my vessels got thrown off balance. When she mentioned her hands were clean it clicked for me. There’s grit from the clay in the slip so it’s pulling the piece off center

Your channel reminds me a lot of a professor I had who recently retired. He's a brilliant sculpture artist and ceramist, and his phrase in his retirement party was "playing in the mud" referring to a passion he had as a child and how he made a career out of it.

Hey, sorry I just now saw your post. I labeled the hand inside as my left hand and not the inside hand. I will do better in the future. The inside hands job is simply to support. It doesn't do much but allow the outside hand to press firmly on the outside of the peice. Thanks for your feed back!

When I was in my first pottery throwing class they just told me if you mess up with centering and pulling Then start all over at first I did then I stopped to see if I can fix it. AFTER SOME MANY ATTEMPS. I’m thankful I attempted these cuz it teaches you about correction you mistake.

4:11 it's not "dIrTy" it's better to have slip on your hands bc it's SLIPPERY and that's what you need so it won't "catch"

I threw with slip for a while when in college. I experimented with all kinds of things then. I noticed that for me its important to have clean hands. We use slip in attaching pieces together because it helps them stick. We don't use water because they just slip and slide without sticking as well. But do what works for you! Happy potting.

In the beginning, don't put that much water. You dont need that much. THAT'S WHY IT POPS OFF. Also, it needs to be round at first so it really sticks, if it's flat then it'll just slide around.

We all have what works for us. When we are 1st starting out we begin to learn through trial and error what works. I tried using a ball of clay and couldn't get it centered without getting bubbles under the clay. There are potters that use balls and there are potters who use half balls of clay like I do. We all figure out what works for us. I have been using this method with great success for over 20 years now.

Extraordinary. From one pound of clay to get that size cylinder. Is that porcelain or a white stoneware? Because you throw with so little water and compress the clay so well, does that make it easier to lift off the bat when it's wet without distorting it?
@PlaysInMudPotteryAsheville
@PlaysInMudPotteryAsheville 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, great question. Its a white stoneware clay. Laguna, Miller 65. I love this clay. Its easy to pick up because I clean off the outside with the metal rib. Cleaning or removing the slip/slury from the outside is key to picking up the piece. Its also important to use dry hands. When picking it up apply just enough pressure to create friction between your hands and the clay, use that friction rather than pressure to lift the piece.

at that point id just start over with another 2 pounds- the time itd take for me to fix and finish an off center vase is not worth it to me than just pulling a new cylinder haha

You are right about that, michael scott, but then you don't pick up the skills to fix things as they occur. I personally have made it a point to try to fix things because then I learn what the clay will tolerate, which is often a surprise. Even if the clay eventually collapses, I use it as a learning experience.

If some one has the skills, like you do, to fix a pot that is thin and off center like the one you started with, probably that person also has the skills to throw it right and not get it to the point that it is thin and off center to start with. Nevertheless, very good demonstration! I will certainly give your technique a try, thx for sharing it.
