When I was in my first pottery throwing class they just told me if you mess up with centering and pulling Then start all over at first I did then I stopped to see if I can fix it. AFTER SOME MANY ATTEMPS. I’m thankful I attempted these cuz it teaches you about correction you mistake.

It must have been difficult for you to throw the messed up cylinder you started with, just to demo ;O) Thank you sooo much for sharing your knowledge!!!!

If some one has the skills, like you do, to fix a pot that is thin and off center like the one you started with, probably that person also has the skills to throw it right and not get it to the point that it is thin and off center to start with. Nevertheless, very good demonstration! I will certainly give your technique a try, thx for sharing it.

I’ve been trying to teach myself to throw and I’ve been allowing my hands stay muddy when trying to pull, thinking I was supposed to use the slip/slurry to lubricate my hands while doing so... Am I wrong?

I did this today and all my vessels got thrown off balance. When she mentioned her hands were clean it clicked for me. There’s grit from the clay in the slip so it’s pulling the piece off center

Wish you’d explained what the inside hand was doing.

Hey, sorry I just now saw your post. I labeled the hand inside as my left hand and not the inside hand. I will do better in the future. The inside hands job is simply to support. It doesn't do much but allow the outside hand to press firmly on the outside of the peice. Thanks for your feed back!

at that point id just start over with another 2 pounds- the time itd take for me to fix and finish an off center vase is not worth it to me than just pulling a new cylinder haha

You are right about that, michael scott, but then you don't pick up the skills to fix things as they occur. I personally have made it a point to try to fix things because then I learn what the clay will tolerate, which is often a surprise. Even if the clay eventually collapses, I use it as a learning experience.

It seems you appreciate the result more than the process
