A Sense Of Freedom Jimmy Boyle’s book far better than the movie ..the violence he dished out and received was on a different level ..because of the Barlinnie special unit he rehabilitated and became very successful..Jimmy Boyle quote ..” treat a man like an animal and he’ll behave like an animal”..taking a person’s liberty and freedom away in a prison is punishment enough in the vast majority of cases ..treating a person like a dog achieves nothing accept hateful violence

I hate that smug journalist. He didn't have to publish anything, but he was rubbing his hands with glee, knowing this would be Brian's downfall. Journalists are psycho's.

John undoubtedly had ptsd. I had some sympathy until the strangling incident and picking on his son for no reason. I wonder if Dot stuck around and what their children would say now about their childhoods.

People work really hard for their possessions have the right to be protected against theft.Young lads do make mistakes the hope is they will grow up contributing to the community they live in.At 60 I look back at my life nearly all of the lads I ran with are dead from drug addictions. Some will never change but some do with a little help poverty goes from generation to generation some lads just need some positive input/influence.There needs to be punishment a deterrent but likewise there should be training education for those who want a way out of the circle of re offending.

When I schoolboy (1970s, East London), I had Saturday job at my uncle's butchers shop. I had a mate who was a good kid and no trouble but couldn't find a job. His dad told him to throw a brick through a shop window and wait for the Police! From that point on the state would look after him, find him a job or trade, all at the tax payers expense! He never did that but some parent hey!

By the mid 1960s Britain was dead and buried and unemployment and poverty on the rise yet again due to mass immigration and by the 1970s Europe was long overdue for another war against Russia. The young lads in Borstal would have done better in the Army etc. going East against Russia with no time for crime.

Brian Harvey was a teenager who had found a trusty supplier of quality pills.. My old mate used to take 6 or 7 doves, mistsubishi's, supermans etc. He always said the colouring determined whether he had them or not. I'm nearly 13 years younger than him, He's 54 and still here... not that I encourage it. R.i.p. To all those who had taken a bad batch and passed away. Be careful out there.

I feel so sorry for John and wonder what became of him. His wife is wonderful and a gift from the gods for a man like John but he needed intensive therapy at a time when it didn't seem to figure in anyone's calculations. The damage done to children in such abusive circumstances is often beyond repair

A great insight into prison life in 1970 and not one man was uninteresting to listen to. Why any system would expect these men not to go on to reoffend when they're being given no incentives to change their ways, is the real mystery

Absolutely loved this when it first aired. Very little hip hop on British TV at the time and this was hard as fuck for 88. I bought X's first two albums on the strength of it. The documentary it's based on is somewhere on You Tube somewhere.

Nowadays people get put in jailbfor throwing soup at an okd painting. But others request child sex abuse images and get off. What an odd world. Perhaps the people who complain about people blocking a road or throwing soup on a painting will sort out their priorities when it comes to pearl clutching.

This is a thoroughly absorbing insight into some of the ripples that extended out from the train robbery! Absolutely ludicrous sentences were handed down and they'd like to have you believe that in large part they were due to the injuries sustained by the unfortunate Mr. Mills although in truth, of course, it was because the entire establishment had had its pants pulled down and got embarrassed in front of everyone! It also seems quite interesting that one or two people, very vocal in condemnation, were more than happy to make a few quid for themselves by exploiting the event for a book deal here or a few speaking engagements there! I have no doubt that "The Great Train Robbery" has generated far, far more "honest" money down the years than was robbed in the first instance!!

I was in parva back in 2013/14. Did 6 months. Started on the newer induction unit (14) and then moved onto the older side, unit 2. I think unit 5 was the privileged unit if I remember correctly. It closed down not to long after I was released I believe. Seen some mad shit in there - people setting themselves on fire, vicious bust ups on the fireroad (main pathways through prison). Haven’t been back to prison since, it worked on me. 23 hour lock up if you weren’t working or in education was tough though. My uncle Patrick was apparently in parva aswell, kinda hoping I’ll see him in this doc but I’m not sure when he was in. My respect to all you who’ve been through it, hmyoi or hmp and have changed your ways or influences 💪
