I am going into such a rabbit hole. Ive always been into social history and growing up on council estates in the 70s and 80s I knew so many lads who got stuck in the system. So important to have these fantastic records of how much humanity has changed in such a relatively short time. Thank you so much for curating such a fasinating collection. If anyone can point me towrds any other docs of this genre, or covering housing conditions during the same period Id be very grateful.

Kids who not got guidance from parents are very easily provoked, and unthinkable crime not consider their consequences for their actions nor considering what would happen to the victim/victims. Until it's too late, he was lucky that 80-year-olds didn't die. Cause he wouldn't have survived adult prison. He'd been another suicide case . Wonder what happened to them. Think couple wouldn't be back others would have, and drugs would have taken a couple of them. It would be great to say they all stayed out of trouble, but 2 success is good outcome. I was on unit 10 next door to brackenbury and i remember a few of these characters obviously smiffy who we all knew had robbed an old ladies handbag. I noticed the black kid in the white shirt in church who was called grant. I saw cobby who like me had been transfered there from wellingborough when that got closed down. I saw mr wainwright the SO on unit 10 and a host of others that i had forgotten about. Best of all i saw the episode about the riot that did not air originally due to the trial taking place at the time so it was great to see it. It closed down not to long after I was released I believe. Seen some mad shit in there - people setting themselves on fire, vicious bust ups on the fireroad (main pathways through prison). Haven’t been back to prison since, it worked on me. 23 hour lock up if you weren’t working or in education was tough though. Gonna be a very long 1 indeed this comment people so feel free to either read it or ignore it but ive gotta say it exactly how it is...i was one of the very last inmates to be shipped out of here (Glen Parva) in late May 2017 before it finally closed its Doors and shut down for good in June 2017. I got shipped out to Doncaster (Marshgate) Best Jail ive ever been too as well apart from Walton in Liverpool which is my local and is Wild!!! But anyway gettin back to Parva i landed here from Sudbury open prison in December 2016 Just before Christmas after loosing my Cat D status for suspicion of selling moble phones and robbing the textiles workshop with all the Brand new Jackets that came in from the outside manufacturers, we had to sew tags into them or repair the ones with minor Damag to the seems before they were then sent back out onto the shops for sale. I Never actually got caught with anything tho tbh Just strong suspicion was all security would say... So was a bit pissed off @ the time but it was full of grasses like most Cat D's with cons chasing home leaves or trying to get out of a postive piss test, so Decide to throw another con under the Bus to save there own skin and CAT D Bed!!! Sad but true... But once the cuffs were on me and was marched Down the block i knew i was gone!!!...i Got to parva and landed on the induction wing which was (unit 14) a Right shithole full of YO's and screws with a matching YO mentality to go with it!!! Petty Rules and backward Logic which was a strong indication that it wasn't gonna be long until it went off with me and them...They Didnt seem to like me probably because i was a Northerner and a fully grown con who was experienced in mind games and mental warfare, who also Didn't like them either and Didn't mind putting them in there place as well, it was clear that they seen me as a threat and closed ranks. Christmas and new year soon came and went by and i was still on there asking to be moved off to a cons unit which was (Unit 12) but they kept me in pad 10 that had smashed plastic windows that wouldn't close properly and kids screaming out there windows all night and bangin the pipes, some were on suicide watch proper stress heads that couldn't Do there Jail so i had to talk to them calmly in the Mornings and try to talk some sense into them as thats not how i Did my Jail...Some actually listened and turned out to be ok and some Didnt and had to be warned. Anyway the screws always tryed to keep me banged up with no Job and stiching me up on laundry Days and Soash (association) so tentions were inevitably rising as i was gettin more angry by the Day until i eventually kicked off throwing some of there comfy staff chairs @ them and pool balls @ the office window's Just for good measure which ended up with a firm of them Jumping on me Mr Heggs, Mr Hopkins, Mr White, Mr S, Mr Briscow and the then Shitbag S.O Taff Lafferty!!! They Twisted me Right up tbh and threw me back in my pad on basic whilst (pending adjudication) which means no TV (wasn't assed about that) but they wouldn't let me out for a shower either with no calls, no mail not even legal mail from my solicitor, no Daily exercise or f#*kall with all meals being brought to my Door becausd they said i was a Risk to staff and security were making a Decision about my status once i had been before the Governor...proper stitching me up as much as poss... They couldn't even take me the block (where i would of been better off and got what i was entitled too) because it was full apparently according to them!!!...So i had to stay in my pad...Anyway nearly a week of this went on and they couldn't keep this up because i was making way too much noise in protest and finally got my lucky break and move off that horrible wing/unit when i seen a screw who i instantly Recognized and had knew previously from HMP Haverigg up in Cumbria way back in 2009. He transferred to parva after moving to Leicester to live and he remembered me thank god. i actually got on alright with him back then as well because he was old-skool firm but fair and you knew exactly where you stood with him MR Gregory👍🏻 who Didnt actually work on unit 14 but worked on unit 12 and had only popped onto 14 very briefly to collect some paperwork but i seen him through my open flap then shouted him over... i told him my situation and what had been goin on and could he get me over onto his unit...He told me to leave it with him then the very next Day he opened my Door and told me to pack my kit and i was moving to unit 12👌🏻 Happy Days🙂 Soon as i got onto 12 i got put straight onto standard still in a single pad because i was non cell-share high risk which suited me Just fine... i managed to get my hands on a George foreman toasty maker and loads of food which was robbed from the kitchens off some of the lads who i befriended and worked Down there...I had the landing smellin of pure toasties ham & cheese🥪 and all the lads would come to my Door and ask for 1 or could they lent it which i always Did...i got a phone and a little TV soon as well... Unit 12 wasn't like Unit 14 it wasn't a wing it was Just 4 landings like a spur 1 on top of the other with a staircase @ the bottom end of the landings going to the top and obviously vice-versa!!! The heating also came on through the walls as well, not pipes the actual walls were heated and made the pad feel more cosy on the fresh winter nights❄🌠 My pending adjudication before the Governor was put off and adjourned for the outside adjudicator (Judge) to come in for more Days to be added to my sentence, So i got around this by keep getting it put off and adjourned by way of pre-booked legal visits with my legal team or probation to land on for the very same Day and time as the outside adjudicator arrived and he only came once every other month!!!...as they can't stop you going on legal visits and when i got transferred to Marshgate Doncaster it never followed me probably because parva had closed permanently by then and was a HMP Jail where Doncaster was a private ran Jail so things Didn't always track you and got lost in the system so i tactically got out of that 1😉 I flourished in my new environment and had some good laughs making it easy Jail...i also managed to get myself a Decent Job on stores so i was always walking about the Jail with some young civvy screw called ash...who belive it or not would sometimes bring us in cold maccys breaky baps that he had bought that Mornings for himself before coming into work but got some extras for us as well👍🏻 where we had to eat it fast and in silence in our own mini staff room within the stores Department and give him the wrappers to properly dispose of under strict conditions we tell and brag to no one...which was Just fine with us🍔💯 Parva was a very strange Jail its gotta be said with a backward inbred culture amongst the screws!!! Ran more like a Borstal with that old Borstal YO mentality. It looked like 1 Because obviously it started out as 1... Also felt a bit like a set on that infamous 1970s film SCUM!!! Definitely seemed to be lost in time whilst literally falling apart hence its very soon to be closure!!! The new wings that were built later on Didn't take away that old Borstal vibe and the predominant YOs mixed with cons @ close Quarters only added to the strangeness of it all...The corridors were massive that seemed to run on for miles like a mental hospital or institution plus the Jail grounds especially the outer perimeter seemed to be Quite Big and spacious as well. I Didnt Rate parva as a Jail per-say and found it strange compared to my own local Jails like a totally Different planet but took the experience of that establishment with me and another 1 Done and completed on my many travels and tours over the Decades!!! It was Definitely a Different Jail and 1 that will never return or be seen again!!! R.I.P Parva & thanks for the Tour!!!

@@tyronesmith1027 ...Unit 12 had a Downstairs area which we had association on and where you came Down for your food with landings above that and then another set above that again from what I remember...it wasn't a wing like unit 14 they were landings that ran Down 1 side with the pads facing each other on both sides of the landings also there was stairs @ the bottom of each landing taking you up and obviously back Down... These stairs were used mainly by the screws and as emergency fire exits incase the landings caught fire. 2 on the bottom then 2 on top of that, Not 4 separate tiers stacked up on top of each other like strangeways...So your miss-reading what I said...The heating also came on through the walls and not ran through the pipes as there was no pipes on unit 12 like there was on unit 14...

I do wonder how much counselling plays a part in modern YOI. So many of these lads just needed some guidance and education from the right people and they'd be productive members of society. What's the point in short term prison sentences when they don't really rehabilitate or deter people from future crime. I was lucky that I went to adult prison and had supportive family and friends. If I was homeless or addicted to something I would keep going back for the meals and a roof over my head

I often wonder what happened to the people shown, how did their life turn out and where are they now? I watched one about Heroin dealing in Liverpool and the people in it would be in their late 60s and 70s now, so it would be very interesting to continue the story, or do a bit of research. I suspect most of the dealers and addicts would be dead now. Maybe one or two did turn their life around, who knows!

That’s correct in the prison system bullies wear both uniforms. We’ve all heard the saying If you can’t do the crime don’t do the time.Reality is if you don’t fight you won’t get or have any respect when you fight you get extra time catch 22.Most screws are horrible bastards because they see you as a theiving bastard vicious circle. If you gravitate from young prisoners to Adult prison expect a life of misery watching your back all the time.I’m 60 years of age nearly a old man been there done it on the out you buy something it’s yours in prison you have something someone else wants bad enough they will slash your face for it and worse. My advice don’t go there.
