I love scissoring dogs. I rarely use clippers. I understood what you were doing and that you had blending to do. But essentially you got the length on the body, quite hard to do evenly. Most people end up with lines. it was interesting you started on the inside of the front legs. I'm going to use this technique next time I do a Shih Tzu. Thanks I learnt something :Dx

This is the video that I have been looking for. Since I became unable to drive I can't get my 16 year old Shih Tzu to the groomers. Any cut is better than no cut at all. And I have a 13 year old Shih Tzu too. So this will be a great help for me and them.

I know nothing about grooming and even I realised that the grooming wasn't completed in the video and was obviously completed after. It looks a lot cooler for the dog :) . I have a shih-tzu x lhasa apso and he HATES being trimmed lol and this video has helped me a lot. Do I need one of those combs or can I use a human comb that comes with a human trimming kit? I have a brush with bristles on one side and the soft wire prongs on other side and a comb as well. Thanks for the video :) Beautiful dog by the way.

I too learned from the video. I'm trying to learn to cut my Shih-tsu mix well. I use a long toothed metal comb (I think it's supposed to be for sheep. LOL ) when I clip my girl. She ends up a little choppy, but she grows out fast and well.

Wow! Dont you own clippers and more than one pair of scissors? In all your videos you are hand scissoring the entire dog and only using that one pair of scissors. All the dogs are choppy and uneven... I also noticed that you are always bending their front legs out to the side which is super painful for the dog!!!! Thats why they keep pulling their paw away fr you. Poor doggies...

Have you read the full explanation? Obviously not, if you had as I explain this is a 'how to do' video, not a complete groom! To the experienced eye it is obvious the groom is not completed. I'm rather shocked at the ones who have answered so negatively as I repeat it just show them up as not reading the information that states its a "How to" quick video, not a completed groom. Therefore it does make one question if these people don't fully read all information available, what else are they skipping? Trust me, after 50 years in this profession, I've grown a hard skin, but it does upset me that so many don't realise you never stop learning, or developing new skills, or adapting lost ones to help the dogs in ones care. After all, their welfare should always come first.

Ok maybe where she's from this type of grooming is acceptable but here in the states it definitely is not and if grooms came out like that then they usually don't get repeat business they have comb attachments that are even a few inches long and then we get it a lot more even and if you have a steady hand you could Hand scissor to look like velvet ... and you definitely need to invest in getting those scissors sharpened it's bending hair like crazy 😳

As I said above, everyone is entitled to their opinion, and the groom is not complete, so a true judgement cannot be truthfully made because of that. I explained it was a hastily complied video to help new groomers, on one of my regular clients I'd groomed since a puppy. Not the 'ideal' model, due to their allergy issues, but a loving pet with impeccable loving manners, hence me choosing to grab the chance to use her. I'm from the UK, and please believe me when I say this way of grooming has been around since grooming began, and was the only way available to groom various dog breeds evenly, when only the 'sheep shearing' type hand clippers used since the 1700's were the only available clippers for groomers to use. In the 40's and 50's when electric 'human' hair clippers became available, 'sculpting' with those clipper began. Those clippers could also be used in place of scissors to produce the same affect on various breeds. (See above answers) I really hope 'this type of grooming' is available to you, because it is invaluable for grooming nervous fearful dogs giving the ability to complete a full grooming service on these dogs. Comb attachments were developed by groomers like myself from their experience over the years and whilst they are a valuable extra tool, they will not produce the 'perfect even hair' on less than perfect coats such as yorkies and tibetans etc. The 'finish' will still require 'tweaking' with scissors. They can speed up the grooming of the various 'Designer' breeds but nothing replaces the finish achieved on poodles with scissor skills. As for 'Repeat business'. I have been successfully grooming for 50 years and loving every moment of it especially when the internet bought all groomers across the world so much closer together enabling the sharing of skills and techniques, in an instant, through so many mediums, like your American groomers, Vanessa's book's on styling, Barbara' Birds knowledge on products, to name but two. I have been passing on my skills and experience especially helping groomers who get into trouble with clients on 'social media' and where to turn to for advice and legal assistance. Before the internet, many groomers were alone, and had no-one to turn to, now I hope most of us are one big happy family. Ready to help each other anytime, and stick together to promote what is a wonderful profession to be blessed to spend a lifetime in. I hope you enjoy the years spent with doggy licks, kisses and love as much as I have. Try "Be more Jackie" on facebook to see other opinions. Love light and many happy years grooming xxx

You are entitled to your opinion everyone is, and as I explained in previous answers, only one side was done and NOT completed, just to show technique. Please read other answers, for further details, and feel free to view the other videos of this groom, again understanding it was NOT completed. There is no 'one way' to groom, only ways that work for you. The most important thing though is to respect the dog's you work on, especially their feelings and emotions. This obviously comes from respecting ourselves too, treating everyone especially our dog clients the way we wish to be treated ourselves. Our voice can affect the dogs we groom, and for us humans, the written word can be taken so many ways, to hurt or praise. As I said on another reply, if you are ever in trouble please feel free to contact me, through FB English Groomers Group, Grouchy Groomers, or "Be more Jackie, I'm always happy to help anyone. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion I can assure you where I have scissored in this video is not choppy. I had been asked to do a quick video of scissor through comb technique by other groomers here in the UK, as this is no-longer taught in grooming schools, yet is so valuable not only for poodles etc. But ALL drop coat breeds, double coated breeds like golden retrievers and collie breeds or nervous dogs who hate the sound and vibrations of electric clippers. Obviously this is only one side of the dog showing 'how to do it' the dog isn't finished the other side, the head ears tail etc, have not been touched and yes appear uneven still.

With comb attachments, you are restricted to a short length, where as with scissoring through comb, you can trim to any length of hair, it is especially good when working on Tibetan Terriers, Afghans, Bearded Collies, full coated Shi Tzu's Lhasa's etc, to leave the hair from 4 inches/10 cms up to 12 inches / 30 cms :) It is also invaluable when a nervous fearful dog will not entertain having electric clippers anywhere near them, through a past grooming experience elsewhere.

***** I have the same issues which is why I went over to this system, I've since changed to a smooth garden hose, as I found the washing machine hose collected scum on the inside, not good. The garden hose being smooth, means it cleans when rinsed with vinegar mix each day. I don't recommend putting a shower head on the hose, as you would restrict the flow and this could cause the motor to over heat, plus you wouldn't get the deep cleaning action, which saves so much time and effort on your hands. Hope that helps xxx

Dogtrimsandtales I too have now changed to a soft no kink garden hose :-) I also bought a special shower head from the US that they actually use on the official Bathing Beauty. It works amazingly. But just one other question for you. I am still quite worried about electric and water . I have an RCD plug that is plugged into the socket and then the pump plugs into this. Would you say this is ok and as safe ?? I am not a grooming business , I just do my own dogs. I wouldn't ever want to go back to bathing any other way, but I do worry about the safety of my dogs .

If you are a business running a commercial salon, or using this at home, this should be fitted with an RCD (Residual Current Device) at your fuse box. This then means if anything electrical fails, the RCD would kick in and prevent any risk of electrocution. Contact a certified electrician to supply and fit one, for both salon use and home use. ladybirdscreatures hey ladybird, I would think that a regular (well, an extra fancy) hose heat that has a clip to keep the handle held down (or the water open). Would be an excellent choice for a “shower head” that would fit on the end of a hose. They have them that spray in many different shapes and pressures and are a lot nicer than your typical shower heads with many more spray options. Plus the clip that goes over the handle solves the problem of the arthritic hand. Sorry, I know it’s been two years, but just in case!

If you have a dog with tangles, add a third wash, but this time add a good conditioner to the water, this will coat each hair shaft and help with gently brushing out those tangles when drying. With the addition of products like Demel'ex (not my business) www.caninedesign.co.uk/demelex-dematting.php When gently brushing, these small tangles should slide out easily. Please note that both you and your Dog Groomer should no longer put a dog though hours of de-matting, as this causes pain and discomfort, pulls on the skin making it sore, and can put the dog off being touched by people, and the grooming/brushing/combing process. Under The Animal Welfare Act 2007, in the United Kingdom, where by no one should cause any animal pain and distress, this is no longer allowed. If you find a Groomer still willing to spend hours brushing and combing a dog's knots out, then one must question if they are truly putting the welfare of the dogs first and following the five freedoms required for all animals.

If the dog is shedding, will the hair clog the pump? Also is there any way this can harm the dog (is if it falls over = electricity +water) ? I think it's a fab idea and u may have talked me into it.

its a water submerged pump meaning it can go under water. Whether or not it clogs the pump i wouldn't know but I think it might a little. Remember to comb your dogs hair before the bath to minimize that. Iv seen a few videos of other people doing this as well, if you have a dog this is definitely the method to go with. But follow instructions to minimize chances of a problem xD
@Dogtrimsandtales
@Dogtrimsandtales 10 жыл бұрын
Forgot to say on video, placing a knee high stocking over the base of the pump, prevents hair build up inside pump, which could clog it if you aren't carrying out a deep clean by striping down pump and removing bottom plate to clean. Obviously remove stocking each night and wash/clean to prevent bacteria buildup. Run pump at end of day for 10 minutes, with either vinegar or bleach to remove any bacteria/scum etc. hope that helps xxx
@Dogtrimsandtales
@Dogtrimsandtales 10 жыл бұрын
E Winter You don't have to brush or comb your dog before hand, Brushing and combing a dirty coat can risk catching the skin with the tines on the comb or brush, allowing bacteria to enter the pores and cause skin issues and infections. The pump will remove the hair with its action. Even with knots and tangles present, it will remove any loose hair and all the dirt, and lift those knots off the surface of the skin, allowing the clippers to run smoothly through that hair, leaving behind more length.

E Winter Not sure where you are, but shedding is down to two factors, climate change because there is no-longer a definition between the seasons. The other factor is commercial kibble based diets that simply are not nutritious enough for dogs and cats. They have two choices, keep their internal organs going or sacrifice their coats. It's the same for our health too sadly. xxx

Candace Allard Sorry I missed your question. If you place one of those knee high stockings over the base of the pump, this prevents hair from being sucked up into the pump. Just wipe the hair off the bottom of the pump when you have finished bathing each dog. Just as I prime the pump, at the end of bathing each dog, I do the same to remove any dirty water from the pump, by flushing it out. I'm in the USA... Is the RCD a circuit breaker of a Ground fault detector? Here in the states Circuit breakers will not prevent electrocution from a ground fault to a person or dog if a unit get damage to the wire. A ground fault Interrupter (GFI) will instantly kill power if there is a an electric shock in progress. If the RCD is only a Circuit breaker that kills the power if the amperage gets to high... you are not shock protected. PLEASE PLEASE check with the place you bought the RCD and determine if this is just a circuit breaker or a shock protector. The highest risk of electrocution is if a dog bites the cord. I know of a home made system here where the owner s Please share what your learn because safety is important and I am trying to learn about UK safety circuit for a project I am working on.

This is why Groomers ask owners not to fed their dog's before coming for a grooming appointment, because dog's need to relax and rest after eating in order to digest their food. If they do regurgitate their food, then we wait to ensure they have finished, before continuing with the groom. We also ensure the Owner is told and warned that feeding before grooming, or any form of exercise isn't a good idea for their dog.

Two reasons. 1. performing rights licence for us to have a radio on in the salon would have cost over £300, but wearing headphones means we don't need one. 2. Health & safety at work - with regards to noisy equipment such as the dryers, the dogs wear ear protection and so do we, and again, we don;t want a fine. Though with our headphones being radio's or mp3's as well as ear deffenders, we leave them on.

I find this groomer to be particularly disgusting towards the poor dogs! She truly doesn’t have any compassion or respect for animals. It’s a terrifying thought what goes on when the cameras are absent. It’s been 5 years so hopefully she’s no longer around.
