why did you use the master controller moving instead of just the feet?

Sub! Do you have video that shows how are you doing your comp process in Nuke, how to do render passes and generating mattes from Maya?

this tutorial was really cool, thanks. I would just say tho that it was really hard to follow when you used hot keys. Obviously i understand that this may be meant for a more advanced maya user who would know the hot keys but when you said unparent the groups with the joints in them and it just instantly happened on ur screen (im guessing you knew the hot key) i was very confused. In the end i made it hahah, i liked the tutorial thankyou

thankyou. As an animator i used step because i knew what i was doing - and i was an expert in the graph editor. Now i teach animation. and the students spend 2 years struggling because they have seen KZbin videos and visiting professionals saying do everything in stepped - despite my advice. Some of them drop out due to frustration. Some professoinals advise them to even step on twos or threes and then spline. When they dont even know how to anticipate. Now i will show them this.

I know this video is 3 years old. But the author assumes that blender hotkeys were carefully designed. They were not. Maya's hotkey system has been carefully arranged and refined based on the input of thousands of professional artists over the course of decades. Blender is an abandoned commercial product that has made small strides to emulate maya's hotkey and will continue to do so. It is a bad idea to learn blender's broken hotkey arrangement when the default will change in the future. If you want an example of how bad blender's hotkeys were designed. Open blender. Press t. Of all the things they could bind `t` to. They bound it to hide/show a toolbar. That is atrocious design. It won't be like that in the future. If the devs want blender to be taken seriously they will overhaul the trash hotkeys and they have been doing this very slowly.

I usually decide on a main rotation which is normally either Y or X and use the gimbal controller just for that rotation and the other two on the normal controller

When importing 2 of the same reference, is possible to change the color of one but not the other? Like say you want one red bug, but want the other bug blue?

I used to animate this way in Lightwave... But, then realized, I was putting the cart before the horse. You should only have to "finesse" something when your in 3rd or final pass animation... But seriously, it's all taster's choice. I've made great sequences utilizing both methods. Great topic of conversation though! Thank you!

I wish Blender navigation was more intuitive and similar to Maya, Max and Unreal. The unintuitive hot keys made me not want to use Blender for years. Now, I am familiar with Blender hot keys, and also a bit frustrated, because if Blender does decide to change its hot keys to match other softwares in the future, I will have to relearn everything! In any case, I don't regret switching to Blender. I loved Maya and Max, but I am not going to be a pro animator. So, I will never be able to afford the softwares. But, I am already too deeply in love with 3d art, and Blender lets me make them.

Maya does not assign materials to faces if the material is already assigned on the object. Assign a dummy material first to the object before assigning the correct materials to the faces.

Hi thanks for the great tut, Amedeo! I wanted to ask - do you prefer using Anim Layers over using Time Editor for cleaning your mocups? Wouldn't Time Editor be better suited for this kind of tasks as it also has controls for creating Additive and Override layers + you can create anim clips and poses for various body parts there. Thanks in advance!

Wow, such a pain to setup up. And so pointless. Use a proper Mirroring tool. Anyone can write a tool that just sets attributes. Notice that you did not mirror a controls that were in different spaces. Or a pose that was off the COG. This tool won't handle those situations.

I think the title is a bit clickbaity and one should probably scratch "Why" and replace it with "When". For new animators it could be a bit misleading to approach any animation without stepped tangents, as this is (in my opinion) the basic approach that should be ingrained in your expertise as an animator, no matter the medium. Also from my experience it's something that directors expect to see as a first pass of animation, unless it's a looping motion like a run cycle. I would say for some animations like what you're showcasing in this video, it's totally legit to skip the whole "blocking" and work exclusively with splined tangents, but there are also kinds of animations where this approach might get you in trouble, if you're not that experienced.
