This is terrific… A very important lesson for people transferring models and animations from Meyer to unreal. And thank you for moving at such a brisk pace. I did pick up a utility from the unreel Marketplace that installs easily and is great for renaming everything within a project if you need. I don’t remember the name but I will look it up and get back to you here. Thanks again

As far as I understand it, stripping the namespace would be needed, if you are exporting from a scene in which the character is referenced.

amazing!! I'm getting issues with my UV. When I apply back the materials in Unreal. The UV's are broken on my model. Some is correct, but some areas are broken

Third problem (I'm hating this entire process 😫) I have applied materials in Maya to their respective geo. I gave the shading group node a name like "brass", and its material input node "brass_mat". I made sure that naterials were applied to the faces and not the objects. No soap. During import, I'm greeted with "Unable to find matching material for face set brass_mat, using default material instead. What hair I have left I am going to pull out. Sorry for all the queries!

Hi there. Try this: apply a new material to the *object* you are having the issue with, then select the object's *faces* and apply to them the material you actually need them to have. I have found that if the same material is first applied to the object and then to its faces, Maya might consider it as if applied to the object but not to the faces.

@@animationpandemic This is what I discovered. I thought maybe Maya was seeing it on the objects AND the faces. I gave my model a default Lambert, then reapplied the correct material nodes to the faces only. Voila'! Thanks man. I definitely learned a few things from you.

Hello Mr Pandemic. Wondering something... I made a Glock 17 firing a 9mm cap. This was an exercise to learn the PBR workflow (for VFX, not gaming), from Maya to Painter to Unreal (v5). I exported 6 texture sets from Maya. I made 6 sets of 3 texture files in Substance (or Adobe now, I guess). Now, the whole point of the UE workflow is to speed up rendering. Part of this is having only 1 set of textures for your entire model, and therefore only 1 material network in UE. How does one do this if you're using multiple textures sets and (or so it seems) there's no way to export all your textures sets into one set of textures from Painter? Thanks :)

Hi there, I am not sure I understand what you mean by "texture set". Do you mean UDIMs (google it to see what I mean). If so UE does support UDIMs. Also, you can make a single material in UE, convert its texture inputs to parameters, and make a material instance of that material. That way you'd have a single parent material. I'd look into UDIMS and material instances (if I have interpreted the meaning of "sets" correctly).

@@animationpandemic No, I was talking about making my textures within Substance Painter. I exported 6 groups of materials from Maya, which came in as 6 texture sets in Painter. (BTW, thanks for taking the time to respond to everything. I have a lot to sift through.)

Second problem, if I may? I cannot export child objects because I keep being told that they have an "ancestor relationship". I am breaking the thing up and exporting separate pieces to see if that does it, but this would be a ridiculous way to go, no?

Hi there. I've met this issue at some point, but now I don't recall how I dealt with it. As a first pass of troubleshooting I would ensure that no geometry shares the same name, that you have selected only the geometry you need (and not a group containing that and other stuff), and I would make sure that if you have pre-cached (say, with Ncache) your geo, in case you are ABC caching simulated objects

Great tutor! However, i wasn't able to get multiple UV sets working on my animated cache in UE. It works fine on static meshes imported from (same) abc file, but i get only one UV set (active on export) when importing as animated cache. I've tried different options on export/import but nothing helps. Any ideas?

Hi there, great video, really informative, however I'm getting an issue when I export the alembic cache, when importing into unreal, the eyes, teeth and wrist band are offset from the rest of the body ... did you or anyone else encounter this?

For any parented Geo you have to tick on the "world space" tickbox from the Alembic export dialog box.

Maya does not assign materials to faces if the material is already assigned on the object. Assign a dummy material first to the object before assigning the correct materials to the faces.

Hey ! awesome video, thanks ! However, i have an issue and can't find a way to fix it: I have a character with multiple shaders in maya. When importing as FBX, all Shaders are here in UE, but when i import my alembic, some of them are put in the "Element 0" meterial of UE (for exemple the Hair and the eyes) I don't understand why. In maya they have different shading group, in the FBX import i get their materials, but the alembic kinda fuse or compile them in the "Element 0" And when i disable "Flatten Track", UE can't find automaticlly the new materials Did someone already have this kind of issue ? Thank PS: sorry for my bad english ^^"

Hi, as a test, in your animation file, try to select some faces of the hair, assign them a different material, and see if this creates a new element in UE. If it creates a new element, it means some of your materials in Maya are still assigned to the object and not to the faces. Also, how many materials are you exporting?

Thanks for the tutorial. Very useful. Subscribed I like the way you explained. Can you do a favor for "humanity"? Someday, when you have spare time and if you feel bored and wanna experience different stuff other than characters, make an automative rendering tutorial (super-duper-hyper-ultra-lifelike-realistic car rendering tutorial) like importing animated (in maya) vehicle into ue with materials and put it into sequencer and make some sexy camera movement and rendering nice looking cinematic movie. My car includes several parts (like over 15 pieces) and materials. I combined into 5 pieces Body and 4 wheels but including the materials applied before combining (12 materials) and animated with Craft Director Studio. I tried to import FBX, alembic and USD but I really get annoying result with materials or animation. Help meeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. My English grammar is not good enough i guess so hopefully you understand what I mean.

Actually when I export the animated car from Maya as USD I checked animation but in UE I can import only mesh and materials. Maybe I missed something or I don't know.
