I personally would have gone with Magnus #1, not just because it was their flagship book, but it also included the first in a series of coupons you could clip to mail away for Magnus 0, a promotional strategy Image copied, and also a general trend of 0 books that swept all of mainstream comics in the 90s. Valiant pioneered a lot of gimmicks that the rest of the industry aped (including chromium wraparound covers).

Kane was a slimy creep. You only need to see him sucking up to Joel Schumacher during the shooting of one of his two Batman movies to be able to tell where he is coming from. His heavily encouraging egotistical verbal response issuing from the side of his mouth to Schumacher at the time says it all. Plus, people tend to forget that a comicbook character called 'The Bat' had existed long before the concept that Kane was said to have invented.
