Was the DC New 52 A Failure?

It has been 10 years since the DC New 52 shook the comic book world by relaunching its entire universe of characters including some that have been publishing ongoing since the 1940s. Comic book readers and collectors were in a frenzy over this new initiative, however it got old real fast. Many books were subject to cancellation after just a few short months. Looking back on the new 52, some comic fans think "good riddance" but others are looking back on the initiative with nostalgia. What do you think about the DC 52? Failure or Success?

You're right people are biased against Liefeld. I actually liked his run of Hawkman. I didn't read Hawk and Dove though. I think my fav. at this time was definitely Batman. I also really liked Lemire and Sorrentino's run on Green Arrow too. Great stuff. Awesome video!

I have to check out his run on hawk man. I actually have it, but after reading the first 8 issues of that run I had to pause, so boring lol but yes Lemire and Sorrentino were amazing on GA

I personally loved the new 52. There were a lot of bad stories, but I think the good stories were so good that they significantly overshadowed anything bad. I agree, New 52 was not kind to Superman lol Really bad Supe titles.

I agree there was some good stuff there but you just can't throw out all that history of the post crisis universe and just throw it to the side like it's nothing like that and Superman just wasn't Superman but the weird thing is right there at the end he was becoming the classic Superman before they bring back the original new 52 Superman was starting to transform into the Superman that we all know and love. It's just the continuity stuff where they would tease you to try to make you think some of the post crisis stories were still cannon but they weren't. If you listened real close. None of that stuff happened. Dan didio said it early on that none of the crisis events happened yet. I kept seeing comment sections of people going well, the crisis happened and this is post crisis. Superman blah blah blah no New 52 Superman as a completely different character

Hey my friend. I remember when "New 52" first dropped on the shelves in my store. A lot of DC fans were worried but also very curious what it offered. As a fan who isn't attached to much to nostalgia or the past, I personally loved it. It introduced an ensemble of amazing artists and writers we rarely saw in either MARVEL or DC. I was collecting most of the mianline issues of those, Aquaman being my absolute favorite. It's where I delved deep into the Aquaman character. Great video Dante.

Thanks Ben! Yeah I have to say, they really stepped it up with Aquaman in the DC 52. It is one of my favourite titles from that era. Geoff Johns is a great writer on my opinion. Overall I really enjoyed the DC 52. As soon as the holidays are over I’ll be contacting you to reschedule that collab. Sorry again that I had to postpone, it’s been nuts lol

Awesome video D! I actually listened to the podcast version earlier today lol Great discussion. I was one of those who dumped DC when the New 52 started. I quickly jumped in when I heard how great Batman was and at the most I read like 5 titles from the initiative. What Marvel was doing at the time was so much better. it was before their social justice agenda became prominent. I fondly remember reading hawkeye and ASM along with Batman and Swamp thing around this time. I think A vs X came out around this time as well. Really good titles at this time!

New 52 like you said that's what got me back into comic books and it made me a full-blown collector again and I went back and bought all the things I got rid of when I was a kid. My Batman collection lol but yeah I walked into a comic book shop in 2012 early 2012 and saw Batman number 3 on the shelf and I remembered when I quit buying them in the late '80s when I was a kid that Batman was at like 450 or something then and I was like how is that Batman number 3 and the guy told me they rebooted the universe so I decided to try some and got immediately hooked so I can thank the new 52 for that. Now I have about 15 long boxes lol. So I don't know if that's good or bad but it did get me back into comics lol. And I have every Batman comic that's come out since 1985 and detective. A lot of money later. Thank you new 52 lol

Also, Static ( Static Shock was his name thanks to his cartoon series) was a Milestone comics character with their own books and established universe. Eventually DC would aquire the series through a deal with Milestone to help push their titles. Sadly only Static got a new 52 book as other Milestone characters got overlooked, such as Icon, Rocket and Hardware.

I was one of those guys who bout all 52 books the first month. That really hurt financially! lol By the second month I trimmed the list to like 10 titles plus the 3 Marvels I was reading at the time. By a year in, I was only reading Batman and everything was Marvel. How right you are that DC can never stay ahead of Marvel. The only way DC can ever get ahead is with gimmicking. Once the gimmick is over though, they fall hard. I must admit though that DC overall does have better writing and stories though.

Seeing as how the New 52 got me back into comics back in the day and is the reason for my love for the Suicide Squad, I’d say it was a success for me.

I liked the new 52 suicide squad. Also featured the first time we saw Harley Quinn in suicide squad. Overall, it was a success for me too. Great memories with the new 52 for me. Thanks for commenting!

One of the problems Dante with the new 52 was that when they first released it, a lot of people didn't know this was a full total reboot just like crisis on infinite Earth was they thought this was just a relaunch I got in so many arguments with people that were trying to claim that everything's the same when it clearly wasn't. I mean it clearly showed that in that first Justice League issue Batman had just met Green lantern lol. And Superman clearly was not the same Superman as he had been before. Everything about it was different. I knew from the get-go and then about October 2011. Dan deo announces that none of the crisis events happened well. Once you remove all of that, that means none of them stories can be incontinuity at that point The new 52 has to be something completely different. I was at the comic store and a guy was arguing with me that Batman did break bane's back in the new 52 and I showed him how it was worded. Bane would say things along the lines of I'll break you. I broke him but he never mentioned breaking his back. Same thing with Doomsday when he showed up for the first time in the new 52 Wonder woman didn't even know who he was so obviously he never killed Superman. He showed up on this boat and Wonder woman didn't know who it was and they would say things like he's doom for kryptonians but he never killed Superman in the new 52 and they should have just been honest with people that it was a total reboot because I actually liked it at first, but you just can't throw out all those classic stories that they did. They tried to keep killing Joe Cannon and things like that but even that wouldn't make sense when it came down to it

I just realized correction. The voice text messed up my words that bane broke Batman's back. I accidentally must have said Batman broke bane's back lol but you get the gist of what I'm saying. It didn't happen in the new 52 yet people thought it did and it was implied that it did but it didn't same thing with death of Superman. They implied it but when Doomsday showed up nobody knew who he was

I think there heart was in the right place with the initiative, but wayyyy too many Bat books. You're right, they should be renamed Batman comics. This was the beginning of the end for DiDio. That cocky SOB really thought he could stay ahead of Marvel long-term. What a joke!

Yeah I honestly believed the new 52 though a reboot was going to be undone with that Trinity war thing they was building up to and I thought that's going to put the universe back into place. This was just a big storyline new 52 but it didn't happen and if the sales had continued like they did at the beginning we would still be in the new 52 universe lol. The only reason they scrapped it and act like it don't even happen now is because it started to fail but had it continued to sell good. We would still be reading the new 52 universe

Yeah Batman new 52 was good up until about the 30th issues. When he just jumped the shark started having Batman take down the whole Justice League and one issue in Batman number 35 joker eyes Justice League at that. So it means they would be ruthless and everyone says Grant Morrison did a back God character. I think Scott Snyder went a step further with it lol. Batman's my favorite character by far but he cannot take down the Justice League by himself. I'm sorry he can't do that lol. That really pissed me off when I read that even though he's my favorite character. I like the 1970s and '80s version of Batman dark mysterious. He'll kick your ass but there's a chance that if he gets into an alley on a dark night he might get killed. If 20 or 30 guys jump onto him. That's the Batman that I know. I don't want the super Batman that can take down the Justice League by himself because it ruins stories. Like how can you do a penguin story when Batman can take down the Justice League and fight darkside by himself? Lol. It's absurd to even take the penguin serious as a villain, it ruins his rogues gallery

Hey Dante! Merry Christmas to you and your family! Hope all is well!! Thanks for giving us a video for the holidays! Personally I was a little indifferent with The New 52. I only bought Harley Quinn issues as that was the only book I was interested in at the time( with those books selling out like crazy!). As you know, there was some CRAP books, such as Death of Robin, New Lobo( omg that sucked) and Batman being the only 52 story to continue his continuity...nearly unchanged! Would you lake to cover the bad side of new 52? I think that would be another great video idea for you- also please talk about THE ROT! I'm interested!!!! Thanks again bro and have a Happy Holiday!

Merry Christmas to you and your family as well. Great suggestions. I will have to dive into that. The rot was amazing… I’ll have to do an episode about that soon. I need to reread swamp thing though. I have a huge trade collecting all of those issues lol yeah there was a lot of bad in the DC 52. I tended to avoid the Bad and stick with the good. I got suckered into the death of robin. Luckily I only paid cover price for it. The story was really bad though. I really don’t like Grant Morrison lol I sold all my Batman Inc issues not too long after lol always. A pleasure!

The New 52 got me back, temporarily, as a regular active comic buyer. It was a good jumping back-on point. Batman, Animal Man, Swamp Thing were all great. Totally agree. Justice League was underwhelming, and others like Red Lanterns and Frankenstein (?), Dial H for Hero, were a hot mess. My interest lasted for about a year, and I haven't bought a new comic book in years. I still follow channels like yours for that connection to a hobby I grew up loving. The concept is good but boy do I hate the cover art. All of the logos slapped on the covers are just not appealing. That's one area where Marvel has destroyed DC for seemingly decades now is just the cover art. Almost without fail, DC cover art looks cheap and frivolous. The stories may be good but who's going to stop in their tracks and pick up a book with NEW 52 and REBIRTH logos all over the front.

Lol I can definitely see what you are saying. I tolerated the new 52 branding, but now, when I see rebirth on anything, I ignore it! I really did not like rebirth at all
