If you like the 80s synthpop-meets-prog-metal vibe, you should check out Voyager from Perth, Australia. They're a little more metal and a bit less synthpop than Kyros, they've been at this for over 20 years, and got 9th place in the Eurovision Song Contest last year! That'd be a dream tour for me - I want to see Shelby from Kyros and Danny from Voyager have a keytar battle! :D

for what it's worth, their later albums are much more musically advanced, and these two tracks that just popped up of you hearing their first album are two of the most basic of that album musically (better suggestions for someone into prog would be 'Dead Goon', 'Stubb (A Dub)', 'My Ass is on Fire' or even 'Travolta'), so don't be let down or put off by what just sounds like goofy ska and funk. 'Disco Volante' may have been one of the most important albums of the 90s and was LEAPS forward (and sideways) and highly influential. 'California' was their most pop, but certainly the best, with some stunning arrangements and production. each album is very distinct. BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY THAN THAT: Trey Spruance, who was the main guitar player, is genuinely a genius and his later project, Secret Chiefs 3, is absolutely reaching the peaks of music. SC3 is much closer to "prog" sensibilities, though not with any intent. Trey does some fascinating rhythmic composition for the Ishraqiyun stuff, not working with traditional time signatures by with rhythmic ratios decided by whatever ancient musical esoterism he got himself into. his tessellation work is fascinating, but not much has been officially released. hear the track 'Perichoresis' for an example. not just basic polyrhythm but a system of rotations of geometric forms, with a seemingly simple basis but very difficult to grasp. In a way Secret Chiefs is more straightforward with most tracks being of a single style and highly disciplined, but it's also an evolution and maturation of the stuff he was writing on the later Mr. B albums and really is very special music. a couple of tracks that may appeal to prog fans would be 'Vajra', 'Scorched Earth Saturnalia', the amazing arrangement of Bernard Hermann's 'Radar'... but honestly, hoping that any prog fan recognises the value of ALBUMS, just listen to 'Book of Horizons', then go back to 'Book M', then maybe the Traditionalists album, then everything else because it's all great. I'm not suggesting an SC3 reaction video (I don't intentionally find these reaction channels, just saw this and clicked), I'm just suggesting an incredible musical world to explore. unfortunately most talk around Mr. Bungle follows onto Mike Patton, but Trey is another level of brilliance (and Trevor Dunn, the bass player, does some wonderful music. definitely hear his latest Trio-Convulsant album and for proggles hear the latest albums from Ahleuchatistas and Titan to Tachyons, both of which feature Trevor on bass). watch out for Trey, though, seriously. his classical works for the Kronos Quartet will also hopefully get some proper release one day.

“Questions reduced to silence” - this is what literally happens in the music as well. This is one of my absolute favorite Meshuggah songs. It is actually one main musical idea (which can be heard in the end), cloaked with pure hardcore punk wall of sound. And as the song develops, the musical idea slowly shows itself. It is very “beautiful” as an analogy to the song’s lyrics.

Thanks for doing a Steve Smith video. I'd love to see more reactions to him as a drummer. He was off my radar as well until he released the Drumset Technique and History of the US Beat video. I highly recommend it if you find it and have the time. It clocks in at 4.5 hours. Also, I think I've seen the pitch bending before from Bonham. I think he did it in the Song Remains the Same video drum solo.

I heard a reviewer of their work describe Cardiacs thusly: "they are attacking you with music and you thank them for it". That gets as close to it as I can imagine. Be well. JT

I don't know if Thank You Scientist are directly inspired by Cardiacs, but they have a similar tendency to interrupt themselves with a perfectly formed new idea every few moments. Cardiacs fans should certainly give them a go.

The lyrics of this song are one of the best descriptions of ADHD I've ever heard. I doubt it's intentional, but it's so relatable.
@BleedingEdgeProg2 ай бұрын
Wouldn't surprise me at all if it was intentional, though perhaps not specifically about ADHD. I'm fairly certain that wasn't yet identified as a diagnosis at the time the song was written, but certainly people experienced it by then.

Ok kinda random, but you should check out the rapper “JPEGMAFIA”. My recommendations are “Jihad Joe” (off of his newest album) and “Baby I’m Bleeding” Edit: btw I wanna clarify that even though I’m recommending you under a Mr. Bungle reaction it’s not because they’re similar or anything, I’d just like to see you react to him. Both are pretty experimental, but that’s about one of the only similarities lol

Mr Bungle (mentioned in these comments), particularly Patton, were fans of Cardiacs, (and vice-versa). Smith & Patton got to meet up when Patton was touring the UK, (my friend, who was produced several times by Smith, said he saw a picture of them both on Smith's wall). Despite being around since the early 80's, Cardiacs never broke, perhaps the music was too esoteric and weird for radio play? Also, their persona (at least in the early years) was way too odd for the mainstream, (if you see pictures of them in old uniforms and horrible make up it's because they were acting as a soldier/ ghost, although Smith would say they were only trying to look their best). The band did get some press notice, a centre page spread in some tatty UK tabloid, but only because Tim claimed that he and Sarah, (who played Sax and was his wife), were actually brother & sister who had an incestuous relationship. I was lucky enough to see Cardiacs in 2007 and it seemed the band where about to break big but he had a stroke/heart attack coming back from a My Bloody Valentine gig. Random Fun fact: Their manager also managed Napalm Death.

Nice Interview. I found out about the Album through Notes Reviews, went and listened to it a few times and then bought it. The 80s vibes whas the thing that pushed me over the edge and made me go buy it. Prog-Metal has gone very not Proggy and very same-y over the years. Mannequin has a lot of similarities to Hakes Affinity, which is my favorite of theirs despite also being critised over the synth-y approach. 80s sounds i really enjoy, that's why Jethro Tulls - Under Wraps is one of their greatest for me and i hope i see more bands go for that approach. Again, great interview @Bleeding Edge.

British Steel was a huge, loss-making, state-owned British company in the late 70's, then Britain's biggest steel producer. The song was a satire where out-of touch parents were deciding on their son's future in one of many slowly-failing, British companies at that time,

Wow, this is the first time I've heard the studio cut. I've been watching KZbin posts of live shows and love this tune. I saw them debut it in Los Angeles. Have not heard the new album. Looking forward. They are all educated musicians from prestiges schools. I think they lean to the avant garde with some elements of metal. Dan their bass player creates instruments. He created an instrument from the low strings of the piano he plays like a slide guitar. He calls it the sledgehammer dulsimer.
