I Half a league, half a league, Half a league onward, All in the valley of Death Rode the six hundred. “Forward, the Light Brigade! Charge for the guns!” he said. Into the valley of Death Rode the six hundred. II “Forward, the Light Brigade!” Was there a man dismayed? Not though the soldier knew Someone had blundered. Theirs not to make reply, Theirs not to reason why, Theirs but to do and die. Into the valley of Death Rode the six hundred. III Cannon to right of them, Cannon to left of them, Cannon in front of them Volleyed and thundered; Stormed at with shot and shell, Boldly they rode and well, Into the jaws of Death, Into the mouth of hell Rode the six hundred. IV Flashed all their sabres bare, Flashed as they turned in air Sabring the gunners there, Charging an army, while All the world wondered. Plunged in the battery-smoke Right through the line they broke; Cossack and Russian Reeled from the sabre stroke Shattered and sundered. Then they rode back, but not Not the six hundred. V Cannon to right of them, Cannon to left of them, Cannon behind them Volleyed and thundered; Stormed at with shot and shell, While horse and hero fell. They that had fought so well Came through the jaws of Death, Back from the mouth of hell, All that was left of them, Left of six hundred. VI When can their glory fade? O the wild charge they made! Roughly 147 of the light brigade returned without injury, roughly 47 returned badly injured, the rest were either killed or so severely wounded they died shortly after in place…. It was either a misunderstanding of the original order given or a deliberate act by Raglan who despised his commander and decided that he would give a variation on the order to obtain personal glory. The order was to prevent the enemy from stealing the guns on the ridge that had been lost the day before by charging them with The Light Brigade. Raglan however didn’t pass on this order as given, and from the valley below, Lord Lucan (not THAT one obviously..) and Lord Cardigan (his brother in law) who also despised each other, couldn’t see the Russian soldiers stealing away the guns at the emplacement on the ridge and thought that the order was to charge down the valley towards the enemy. Lucan was incensed and thought immediately that this was utter madness and asked Raglan to return and request that the order be questioned and then brought back to him. Raglan began to rage and refused saying “ your commander requests that you charge the guns” and pointed down towards the WRONG VALLEY ! Lord Cardigan was leader of the Light Brigade and he actually survived as did his horse, Lord Lucan headed the cavalry part of the Heavy Brigade and he followed Cardigan with the infantry but, Raglan began speeding forward overtaking Cardigan, and began galloping towards the enemy and Lucan and the heavy brigade fell behind by some distance. Lucan saw the almost Annihilation of the Light Brigade and decided to damn the orders and halt before every man and horse was lost. Thank god he did or the losses would’ve been far greater than they already were... As to Raglan’s motives, we’ll never know why he did what he did, as he was the first man to die, obtaining the ‘glory’ he so desperately desired…

You are mistaking Raglan for Louis Nolan who was a Captain. Raglan was in overall command of British Forces at Balaclava. Nolan was considered to be a military theorist who understood the need to attack and not dither. However, incompetence, mistrust, and miscommunication created a perfect storm that led to charging the wrong guns at a trot. It should be noted that 1)Raglan was losing his marbles, and kept thinking that the French were the enemy, 2)As you mentioned, Lucan and Cardigan despised each other and both blamed the other, and then Nolan when he couldn't defend himself.. And just so we can get a nice picture of the type of men they were, Cardigan left the field alone without recalling the men and went all the way to the black sea where his yacht was anchored and had a nice champagne dinner. He later said he had abandoned his men because he was very angry that in mind Nolan had tried to take over command of the charge, which was mostly likely Nolan trying to redirect Cardigan's attention to the actual objective. Oh, and Lucan liked to evict the irish from his lands during the Potato Famine. Did it to thousands of people. They nicknamed him "the Exterminator".

@@VOLCAL You are very right, but at the same time try not to loose focus on the meaning of the clip. And also if you want and are willing to learn. I as well as others are willing to teach. I would love to teach inner city, and culturally diverse kids how to comprehend literature. Passion is not in who is being taught, but what you are teaching. No one should be left behind. There is not to make reply There is not to reason why There is but to do and die Into the Valley of Death rode the 600 I don't think people fully understand the impact of this. Under suicidal orders, charging in with 3 sides covered with cannons, on horseback and on foot. Any sane man would not follow those orders, but those who are truly loyal will do anything that their CO would tell them to do. Even charge right into their own deaths for nothing. It's a truly remarkable instance of a horrible mistake.

Not necessarily about either. It's about principle of a soldier. It's not really about courage or bravery. It's about what victory costs. The principle of being a soldier and following orders even when you know the orders aren't right. If you reject orders because it's obvious that they won't work, are you really a soldier?

The poem is about the charge of the light brigade during the crimean war. There was a major communication mix up. Cardigan was told to attack a retreating artillery unit but instead attacked a well dug in, fortified artillery position with a great field of fire. You could argue the poem sums up the Crimean war, and British psyche at the time. It's quite interesting!
