The poem is about the charge of the light brigade during the crimean war. There was a major communication mix up. Cardigan was told to attack a retreating artillery unit but instead attacked a well dug in, fortified artillery position with a great field of fire. You could argue the poem sums up the Crimean war, and British psyche at the time. It's quite interesting!

Brilliant movie. Some people said that Sandra Bullock didn't deserve that Oscar. I don't agree. She was impressive and charming here. Quinton Aaron, Tim McGraw, Jae Head, Ray McKinnon were great as well. The whole film was very deep, personal, emotional & touching. Just like "In Love and War" (1996), "A Time to Kill" (1996), "Hope Floats" (1998), "Crash" (2004), "The Lake House" (2006), this film proves that Sandra can act dramatic roles brilliantly well!

Roughly 147 of the light brigade returned without injury, roughly 47 returned badly injured, the rest were either killed or so severely wounded they died shortly after in place…. It was either a misunderstanding of the original order given or a deliberate act by Raglan who despised his commander and decided that he would give a variation on the order to obtain personal glory. The order was to prevent the enemy from stealing the guns on the ridge that had been lost the day before by charging them with The Light Brigade. Raglan however didn’t pass on this order as given, and from the valley below, Lord Lucan (not THAT one obviously..) and Lord Cardigan (his brother in law) who also despised each other, couldn’t see the Russian soldiers stealing away the guns at the emplacement on the ridge and thought that the order was to charge down the valley towards the enemy. Lucan was incensed and thought immediately that this was utter madness and asked Raglan to return and request that the order be questioned and then brought back to him. Raglan began to rage and refused saying “ your commander requests that you charge the guns” and pointed down towards the WRONG VALLEY ! Lord Cardigan was leader of the Light Brigade and he actually survived as did his horse, Lord Lucan headed the cavalry part of the Heavy Brigade and he followed Cardigan with the infantry but, Raglan began speeding forward overtaking Cardigan, and began galloping towards the enemy and Lucan and the heavy brigade fell behind by some distance. Lucan saw the almost Annihilation of the Light Brigade and decided to damn the orders and halt before every man and horse was lost. Thank god he did or the losses would’ve been far greater than they already were... As to Raglan’s motives, we’ll never know why he did what he did, as he was the first man to die, obtaining the ‘glory’ he so desperately desired…

To the fellow below, We don't think the poem is about us. TIm McGraw's character is simply relating the poem to something familiar for Michael's character (football) so that he can understand and appreciate the gravity of the story. You are very correct the poem isn't about LSU & Old Miss but either way you want to look at it, the embedded message is the same. And if you think Americans are so dumb, it might prove wise for you to stop watching our movies. Just a thought.

@colinwt It was the Battle of Balaklava and the cannons used for VC's are actually of Chinese origin that were unlimbered at Sevastopol by the Russians. I'm fairly sure that the Charge of the Light Brigade is recognised world wide as a British event.

There is not to make reply There is not to reason why There is but to do and die Into the Valley of Death rode the 600 I don't think people fully understand the impact of this. Under suicidal orders, charging in with 3 sides covered with cannons, on horseback and on foot. Any sane man would not follow those orders, but those who are truly loyal will do anything that their CO would tell them to do. Even charge right into their own deaths for nothing. It's a truly remarkable instance of a horrible mistake.

"..99% of the people in europe dont know anything about american football" Because it's junk and not played with the feet, so not football. "Blind side" is, however, a term in RUGBY FOOTBALL (both League and Union), which is played by many more people in many more countries than the gridiron rubbish you refer to. It is also called the "narrow side", and that is perhaps more common nowadays. The other side is called the "open side".

Not necessarily about either. It's about principle of a soldier. It's not really about courage or bravery. It's about what victory costs.
