I can understand the argument that people do not like the "looks" of the earthship. Seeing something different than a standard house shape is difficult for some people to see the real benefits. I wonder if a "modern" looking house could be built. But with as much of the earthship benefits built in.

Mike I wish you'd give more updates on your cancer in 2024. So many of us watching you are just as interested in holistic & prevetative health as we are about architectural sustainability. Big pharma and big ag must be reduced and land AND AIR need to be freed up. We cannot have a "Space Force" while they simultaneously buy up all the land. Think about it.

I want to build my own earthship but I have no idea where to even start lol. I struggle with putting together a shelf...I actually never figure it out and would get my friend to do it for me.

So how many of the thumbs up commenters are encouraging their elected officials to try earth ship communities - with a big bonus - reducing city tax to the percentage what the earth ship produces: a self sustained water supply ,a self sustained sewage system and a self sustained electrical supply. No reliance on the city at all. Perhaps this is why cities do not encourage earth ship communities. They would go broke.

Maybe you could speed up the free dog fence process (needed in every zip code across the USA, etc.) by stacking the tires vertically and connecting them with a 'screw gun' which is supposed to be similar to a 'nail gun', but it is supposed to be much more secure, and last much longer than the 'nail gun'. Each vertical column of tires could be quickly filled with free horse manure. You might ask at nearby horse stalls at the end of Valley View Road at San Pablo Dam Road (call first for an appointment and permission before just showing up to any of the above). The nearby Feed Store on Appian (not a typo!!!) may have suggestions for other places nearby to request free horse, etc., farm animal manure for the tire columns. These vertical tire columns could be quickly filled at every tire with wild flower seeds, and 'green manure seeds', to help the wild flower and vines of all kinds grow, especially tea rose vines, because the thorns would help keep criminals, etc. from trying to jump the fence. Maybe consider a wide variety of 'toppers' depending on the location, electric wires can limit the choices. Cactus or free 'ice plants' is probably the best choice for 'toppers' for the tire columns, as watering is probably very limited at this location, at this time. Maybe in about one year all the tires could be covered by pretty, colorful, easy to grow, Nasturium (not a typo!!!) flowers (popping through 'nail gun' holes in the tires, to prevent rain water from stagnating at the bottom. The seeds are very fast growing and 'replant' themselves as they produce their own flower seeds, great choice to cover up and hide the ugly tires. IDEALLY, TRY TO GET MOTIVATED VOLUNTEERS TO BUILD BIOTECTURE EARTHSHIPS (NOT A TYPO!!!) ALL OVER CONTRA COSTA COUNTY (ABOUT 30 MINUTES FROM SAN FRANCISCO), AND EVERY OTHER COUNTY OF CALIFORNIA, IN ORDER TO HELP SAVE DOGS, CATS, AND VETERINARY CLINIC STAFF (ESPECIALLY THOSE INVOLVED IN SPAY, NEUTER PROGRAMS). THEY ARE ALL FACING IMPOSSIBLE BILLS, STUDENT LOANS, HIGH RENTS, ETC. A FEW DAYS AGO A VETERINARIAN DOWN THE STREET DIED. HER SISTER, THE CO OWNER OF THE EL SOBRANTE (NOT A TYPO!!!) Can termites eat the plastic wood?

If you don't mind the rubber touching your water I think A big equipment tire would make a good cistern. Concrete the bottom and put pipes in the bottom for overflow and the pressure pipe just like a water tank for livestock. But it'll only hold 150-500 gallons depending on the size. Have to be for a spring fed cistern rather than rain catchment. And i reckon tires could make a decent liner for a shallow hand dug well.

This is pretty cool but of course can’t work the masses . There would be a massive deficit of housing if every house tries to follow this recipe.

If you want to add grass or vegetation to your outdoor space, a could of cows or pigs dropping will make the desert to geminate & with it, the greenest of environment. Check Joel Salatin's videos to see how he started at Virginia with no dirt on the soil, pure stones, he started with some animals, and he got up to a foot of ground by means of animal droppings, manure spreading on the land, and now he does rotational grazing feeding his animals.

I'm curious about incorporating bamboo pole construction, masonry heaters & air crete into earthship biotecture. Hopefully I'll be able to visit the village next summer ❤
