There were a lot of things wrong with the second activity. It's important in the second activity to have at least 3 repeats before changing the phrase because you don't allow a chance to listen or give your partner a chance to respond. Also, you shouldn't "double dip", meaning saying the repeated phrase followed by a new phrase without giving your partner a turn. you should only make a phrase about an observation of your partner not about yourself like, "I appreciate that", you should let the phrases land meaning that you should wait for your partner to finish talking before you talk, you shouldn't be talking over your partner because you are not listening and allowing to be affected by them, and finally you have to repeat the same exact phrase, no adding or deleting words, it proves that you are listening if you repeat word for word.
@thehoudeschoolofacting5472Ай бұрын
@@mattheweustace1 thank you for your comments. We disagree 100%. This exercise is to teach actors to listen and respond to be present with their partner and to react. We are working towards following our instincts emotionally and allowing our partners to affect us. We should be having an experience with our partner. The way that you are explaining it there are so many rules which would put the actors in their head, the goal is to get out of our head and to follow our instincts. You’re welcome to check out a free class if you would like.

The second students seemed more engaging to listen to. The deep voice sound added audio contrast. The differing poses and settled quality of one vs a more nervous overall energy of the other seemed to create an interesting dynamic.

Both are great. Different ppl will respond differently to each other. It’s about having an experience with your partner while saying the same thing.

Ok, so I started reading the book "Sanford Meisner on Acting" as you has suggested in another video (probably more recent this this one), I'm only on chapter 7 right now, but I am having a hard time understanding what he is trying to teach. Also, I found that I wish it had some practice exercises at the end of each chapter to help you understand what he was trying to teach.
