Thank you for your service, Peter, and for preserving this piece of history. I've recently discovered this series and am slowly getting through them. Would the grime on the lens affect the clarity/range of the light?
@PeterHalil

Thank you very much, much appreciated. In the minds of the Keepers that washed,dusted and polished these lenses from way back in History, and up until our redundancy days, yes indeed, but obviously not to our bosses that left them get into the grimey state that I've seen on some of the automatic lights. But then I'm very biased! Cheers and stay safe.

Hi, this job is no longer available in this country. The only way to get to a Lighthouse out to sea would be as a Technician etc that go out to do maintenance jobs. You have to google Trinity House london and see if there are any openings.

I am here in 2024. I watched this a few years ago and it is still fascinating to me. I can't swim but I love all things about lighthouses. Would I stay in1?. Yes I could manage a week with a few people. The sea fascinates me ...especially a rough sea. I know it isn't like this anymore in a lighthouse. I love watching this .

Thank you very much for your kind comments. I was upset that my bosses were going hell for leather to rip apart and automate these lighthouses, plus get rid of us Keepers, and nobody seemed interested in preserving anything of our fast dissapearing job/way of life. That was basically the driving force to somehow record something before it was lost forever. Thanks again, and stay safe.

I am morbidly fascinated by these films. As an ex-professional diver, I have an inbuilt fear and respect for the sea. I own a 40ft boat, but get seasick. I have a PPL, have Sky-dived, but have no head for heights. I am also claustrophobic. All of these shortcomings mean that I could never be a Lighthouse Keeper! So I have absolute respect for these men and the critical job they do. Fantastic videos, all of them.

How the fuel transfer to the tower
@PeterHalil
@PeterHalil 22 күн бұрын
Hi, In my era of helicopters, they dropped underslung rubberized fuel bags onto the helipad, and once connected to the appropriate valve, they were gravity fed down to the tanks. They did the same with water which had different connections, so you couldn't have any mistakes. Cheers and take care.

I watched quite a few of your videos just wondering what food you took with you and was it for your account or was it subsidised
@PeterHalil
@PeterHalil Ай бұрын
We were given a subsidy yes, for being out on these Lighthouses, so that paid for your food. I kept journals towards the end in which I tried to log everything, including my food lists. The way that I did my food was basically, 28 breakfasts, 28 dinners and 28 tea or evening meals. Also did extras incase of not getting off on time. This was, what I would eat normally at home. So once you had broken it down like that, you then did vegetable shopping, meat shopping etc. Once onboard you seperated your meats and put them in the freezer. Vegetables etc stored in a window or in cardboard boxes somewhere. You also took several cans of veg etc for when your veg ran out of its shelf life. Cheers and take care.You were a careful shopper, if you forgot something, then you didn't get to eat that thing.

Hi Peter - only discovered your channel recently and I'm absolutely loving it. Thank you for documenting this - I'm especially interested in the day to day lifestyle of a lighthouse keeper, I've always wondered what living conditions were like and what they did for food etc., and you are providing all that and more with these videos. Can I ask, and I apologise if you've answered this many times before, what happened to the lighthouse keepers when automation came in? Were they all let go or were they moved to 'desk jobs'? Regards from Ireland Erik
@PeterHalil
@PeterHalil Ай бұрын
Hi Erik, Thank you very much and welcome to my channel. I'm afraid that when we were all made redundant, then that was it. We all had to find alternative employment, wherever we could. We were all offered retraining, but not for within the Lighthouse service. so quite a shock to a lot of us. Cheers and stay safe.
