I'd guess that each Tornado has its ups and downs. Tornado 1 is technically Sonic's plane, so Tails doesn't have full access to customise it. But maybe he added the ability to transform and get a second seat if needed (A feature that was probably designed for other passengers given Sonic's preference for wing-walking). I'd guess since this plane is most commonly seen when the gang are on scouting missions or travelling normally, it's probably the most comfortable or perhaps has the most range. Why they use it in Lost World? Aside from nostalgiabaiting, if the 'most range' part is true perhaps they knew they'd have to Track Eggman a while. Tornado 2 was designed with combat and speed in mind. As you note, it was probably used to catch up with Sonic. Since it's clearly seen a couple upgrades such as an autopilot robust enough that Tails doesn't even blink at jumping out of it, I'd guess it's running on artificial chaos emerald technology. I mean, we know he can do that since he has one in 2. The Cyclone is built for combat first and foremost, so it makes sense that it only shows up when Tails wants heavy armament. It's probably 'used' in Frontiers because Tails is thinking about combat, and thus that's what Cyberspace manifests (But I do wish we'd gotten a regular Tornado) Tornado-1 is possibly Tails deciding to have a 'comfort plane' of his own since the OG Tornado 1 belongs to Sonic and getting way too much of a tinkerer with it. Or since he's off studying with Professor Pickle, maybe he put it together specifically as a tinkering project whilst away from his workshop. As for the name, I can only think of tax evasion as a reason.

with the tornado 2 not being emerald powered sometimes and the cyclone being emerald powered sometimes its probably tails modified the tornado 2 to have a backup power source and after sa2 the cyclone was modified to accept an emerald to power it too as for why the tornado 2 was used in heroes was probably because tails knew hed need more passenger space for knuckles and sonic while in shadow and adventure 2 it was more combat heavy so he used the more armed vehicle

Tails just saved Station Square from a nuke, I feel like him asking "Hey can somone help me find and toe my crashed plane to my workshop" is a little thing to ask. Especley as I imagine Tails acually knew exactly where the plane crashed. So he simply had it toed, maybe via a Helicopter to his workshop.

B. Adventure 2 was developed solely by SEGA of America while World Adventure was largely developed by SEGA of Japan, and they are NOT good at communicating. C. SEGA/Sonic Team as a whole have never cared wholly about continuity and are only pretending to care now to placate their target audience.

Yeah. I knew for a long time the Tornado 3 in Unleashed was a different plane.

I assume tails installs a big battery into the tornado-II as to allow it to function in short bursts. Thus it allows him to use a faster plane in short journeys and short battles. Thus, he could still need the old tornado to fly across longer distances.

There ain’t no “timeline shenanigans” dude and Mania isn’t in its own timeline/dimension anymore. They were playing with the concept back then but it’s now a part of Modern Sonic’s past, the Fang IDW Miniseries which is a prequel to Superstars which does have the Hard Boiled Heavies is proof enough of that. And Riders definitely is in the timeline and isn’t it’s own thing, that just a dumb thought especially when the Babylonians are referenced in Frontiers and the Babylon Rogues very clearly appear in the IDW Comics plenty of times, the current arc is even a Riders inspired one, and the IDW Comics have been confirmed as canon to the games’ canon for a long time now. And there simply is 4 main models of the Tornado: • The original Tornado that Sonic owns which appears in Sonic 2, Sonic 3, Sonic Mania, Sonic 4, Sonic Superstars, Sonic Lost World and Sonic Frontiers. • A separate Tornado that Tails made and owns which appears in Sonic Adventure 1, Sonic Advance 1, and Sonic Rush Adventure. It does have Tails’ tail symbols plastered all over it. • The Tornado 2 that appears in Sonic Adventure 1, Sonic Heroes, Sonic Advance 3, and Sonic Riders is Tails that’s the follow up to Tails’ Tornado. • The Cyclone is simply inspired by the Tornado 2 but is its own separate thing. • And the Tornado-1/Tornado 3 obviously is just the third Tornado model of Tails’ own personal Tornados.

Minor note. Sonic Rush Adventure's Tornado gets lost in the Sol Dimension (That's why Tails uses the SS Tornado EX at the end) so any difference in its design can be chalked up to Tails having to build a new plane after that, rather than it being placed later on the timeline. Honestly, pretty sure Tails just keeps a lot of planes. He also says that he wante to use the Chaos Emerald to "super charge" the plane, not that it would be the only source of fuel. So maybe both Tornado 2 and Tornado III / Cyclone can tap into Chaos Energy but don't explcitily need it.

no mania isn't another timeline, no forces didn't confirm that, officially sonic mania takes place between sonic 3& knuckles and sonic superstars, and sonic forces mentions nothing of another timeline they just mistakenly have tails refer to classic sonic as the sonic from another dimension dialogue as a whole has very little credibility, from tails tube onwards classic sonic is reconfirmed as sonic from the past, and sonic x shadow generations confirms the events of sonic generations did not alter the timeline.

The Tailstube videos imply Mania takes place in the modern timeline as well as the classic, though Mania Adventures and Encore mode have to happen in separate timelines from each other.

To me,Tails has a lot of planes and just use whatever he feels it suits on the situation. He probably has a copy toe-to-toe of Sonic's plane to use for himself as it's Sonic's plane after all.

Where in the world did you get “sonic mania” happens in a different timeline thing. In tailstube they literally said that classic sonic is from the past. Forces’ alternate dimension thing was retconned!

The timeline inconsistency with stuff like Colours could be because Sonic hopped in his plane and invited Tails along rather than Tails showing up with one of his versions, perhaps the 2 seater in Rush Adventure was a prototype that he didn't return to until Frontiers.

The original version reappears from Lost World onwards, complete with its Mega Drive-era design rather than the Adventure redesign or the Tornado-1 version, basically because nostalgia. It's the original one so it's automatically the best.

I wouldn’t say it’s weird, the og one, sa1 and sa2 one, You don’t think tails couldn’t find another power source for the tornado 2 it doesn’t need a chaos emerald, but will to reach max speed of smth probably. They can’t have a chaos emerald since that game has special stages(even though team darks team blast has a chaos emerald which doesn’t make sense but wherever. The rocket in sonic 2 is because it got shot down is it not clear it’s gets shot down otherwise they would have landed and sonic wouldn’t be alone in wing fortress, so tails fixes it for short term, and by the credits he’s been on the ground for ages while sonic was fighting in the death egg. So it was fully fixed again. And I’m pretty sure they both co-own it but tails makes them for both of them to use it mostly tails drives tho. The rocket in s3 would have been to get to the tsunami quicker considering they found a freak tsunami in a random point of the ocean that they had to check out so they had to get there quickly so tails reused the rocket from before. He probably also has multiple planes too it’s not like he has to use the same one. I didn’t tpknow the cyclone had tornado-III on the side and the tornado 1/3 from unleashed and generations is now confusing to me but that’s the only thing, 1 small inconsistency. I’d say the tornado-III should be called the cyclone and the tornado 1/3 should be the tornado 3, since the tornado 2 is the same as the tornado 3 but the tornado 3 went back to red and added more stuff, like let to increase the speed to go faster than the tornado 2 would without a chaos emerald.

I think the different seat numbers are pretty easily explained as either being a mod that tails can install/remove at his convenience or just being another transformation the plane is capable of, its less of a stretch than the planes becoming mechs and that's an indisputable fact of their design.
