excellent video thank you so much for doing this deep dive!!!!!!!!!!!! if Move is anything like Note, then the tempo is set by interpreting your initial capture. on Note it will judge what you're doing and match it to a tempo that matches the speed of what you initially did, but i think it also considers a hierarchy of instruments and sounds, so like if i then add a drum track and start capturing there in a way that doesn't closely match the tempo set, it will readjust the tempo to match what im doing in the drum rack instead. i think its really cool because it lets me start off with experimental sound design that will be set to a tempo that matches how im thinking of things in my head

Why would someone who has been buying from the brand for years or even decades suddenly have to pay 50-60% more for the exact same item? Inflation cannot justify this. It's like the brand is deceiving the consumer. On kislux , the bags sold are priced lower but of higher quality, so you might as well go there.

The desire to create and learn keeps me on this journey. Step by step, I discover how the instruments I admire are made. This passion often leads me to flea markets and resale stores. Just a few days ago, I walked out of a store having found exactly the machines I needed for less than €70 and just three soldering points to fix. Along the way, I also meet fellow enthusiasts who are drawn to the same shelves. It’s a small world-our little world.

Can you record automations with the encoders in controller mode ?
@johnpaultumsun
@johnpaultumsun 29 күн бұрын
Yes! But you can't "capture" automation on the encoders using the capture button like you can capture notes, you'll need to record arm a track and record like you normally would with MIDI or audio, so keep that in mind.

You put together a very refreshing video. It plays like a coffee table picture book and creativity memoir. Huge respect to the mindset and skill to pull that off. Love the caption format. You mention prioritizing speed/ease of capture, which I've been thinking a lot about. What is your approach to that challenge?
@johnpaultumsun
@johnpaultumsun 29 күн бұрын
Thanks Kyle! My approach to speed/ease of capture is to basically put in the work at the beginning for every piece of gear. I get comfortable with it, get familiar, maybe make some presets to use as starting points, figure out how it's going to interconnect with the rest of my studio - whether that means what inputs it will feed into on a mixer or interface, how to control it with MIDI or USB or how to use it to control other stuff. That groundwork isn't always the most inspiring or productive, I don't expect to produce anything right away that can be used on a track (although sometimes there are happy accidents, so I try and figure out the interconnect part early!) it's just the necessary time to integrate it into my workflow. And then, once I've learned it and it's set up, I can set aside open creative time to noodle and capture and develop ideas. And then, maintenance - I have to refresh myself every so often on particularly deep gear (like the Analog Four), and that's just like the initial setup time, it's not meant to be creative time it's just technical. Separating technical and creative time and making time for both is what has worked for me - but I'm not as diligent about setting aside the time for both as I'd like to be!

Is there a way to control switching sounds in library with move?
@valdir7426
@valdir7426 Ай бұрын
so can you confirm there's no way to control several banks of parameters on a given plugin (native or vst)? this would be the only feature I feel is missing for the controller mode. btw hundreds of videos about the move and this is the first one I see that talks a bit in depth about the controller mode; which is in itself almost a reason to buy the thing. I don't get it. This is the mini push controller that would suit me; but it's still on the expensive side for just a controller and I'm not super interested in the standalone mode
@johnpaultumsun
@johnpaultumsun 29 күн бұрын
So far as I've found, that is correct, the Move is limited to only controlling the first bank of eight controls for any device. I actually cut a section of the video where I explained that I was initially disappointed by this - or rather, that I was initially excited about using my Push 1 to access multiple banks and nearly every parameter of native devices when I first got it, but that I found myself preferring to slim down the default controls on devices rather than paging through so many banks. So for me, the Move fits my workflow perfectly, but it's definitely a limitation compared to the Push or even some other Live controllers.
@valdir7426
@valdir7426 28 күн бұрын
@@johnpaultumsun I know what you mean but I like having at least 16 parameters assigned; like on synths I usually use roughly the same assignation and I like having access to the two ADSR envellopes. I you have more banks than that then it can ben confusing. Of course for ableton devices it doesn't apply since you (sadly) can't reorder the controls. What's cool is when you have only 8 controls accessible ableton uses a special parameter bank called BOB (best of banks) which will try to be the most useful parameters on 8 knobs (you've maybe noticed that; the controls will be different on your push 1 and move for ableton native devices). I wish they would simply allow access to customisation for how you order things for the native devices though (there's a config file with all of these infos but it's not easy to work out)

I stopped making music years ago. I was an Ableton user for almost a decade but could never afford their hardware. They finally released a high-quality yet moderately affordable device, and most reviews about it are complaints about how it isn't the Push 3. Some people say there are only four tracks, others say there are 8, and some say there are 12. When I first heard about this “issue,” my first thought was, “Isn't Drum Rack almost a 16-track MPC on its own?”

pointing out the personal benefits and giving a list of suggestions for improvement, AFTER actually using it. that is how a review should be! i do not understand the hate this piece gets. nothing is perfect and for something working on battery this has a lot of cool stuff in it. the price is not cheap, but perfectly placed in the market. show me another sampler + digital synth + 32 velocity sensitive pads + touch sensitive encoders + audio interface + build in speaker + mic + resampling + battery.... there is none. everything that comes close, is at a similar price or way higher, or imo a worse device. btw, it sells like crazy, so the screaming youtubers are not representative for all consumers!

@johnpaultumsun
@johnpaultumsun Ай бұрын
I meant to include this but I think I lost the footage! When you're in session mode on the Move, you can use the "odd numbered" step sequencer buttons (or the left-most of the two step sequencer buttons below a column of pads) to select and record arm a track. Double tap to fully record arm. The right-most (even numbered) step sequencer button will stop all clips during playback for that column. And the main track at the far right can be selected the same way as other tracks, and the very last step sequencer button on the far right will stop all clips (but not stop playback). Hope this helps!

I'm hoping to make a more deep dive video into certain uses in Live, and Simpler is on my list! Just so you know though, yes you can "lazy chop" using manual slicing on the Move, and you can even do some slice management by deleting or nudging slice points. When doing all this you'll need to keep an eye on your computer screen though, no graphics like on the Push 2 or 3 to help guide you.

Great video. I picked up a Move and wondered if it might replace my Push 2. I *think* I had decided it will not…but I agree with you that it’s closer than I might have expected. I’ve been *really* surprised just how many updates Push 2 has gotten as Ableton has rolled out Push 3. It really can do nearly everything Push 3 can as a controller. Both Move and older Pushes I think are really viable choices for controlling Live.

There is a workaround for the lack of tap tempo on the Move. In a new session on the Move, tap any pad in the time you want to play, either tapping along to a sample, or just what’s in your head. After that, hit the Capture button, which then sets your session tempo (BPM) based on what was captured. Voila!

Hah yeah you're probably right, there aren't a lot of people out there torn between buying the Move and an original Push. But I think the video shows that the Move holds its own with Ableton's one-time flagship controller for Live. And given that a Push 3 is twice the price of the Move, and a used Push 2 is about the same price as a Move right now, I think some folks might consider whether or not a Move is good enough as a Live controller - on top of being an excellent groovebox!

How easy is it to navigate through clips and scenes on the move?
@johnpaultumsun
@johnpaultumsun Ай бұрын
I think it's pretty easy actually! I have used the Launchkeys in the past, which allow you to navigate the session using only two rows of pads - that was quite limiting, but even still there were times when I would use it. Unless you are stacking 7 or 8 track with an equal amount of clips for many scenes (4+), I think it's pretty easy to keep track of where you are using the four rows on the Move.
