Heard them regularly in the day, and you hear them regularly today in the goth/ brit pop, Alternative clubs. Great side by side example of Interpol and the Chameleons. I always thought Interpol was ripping off Kitchens of Distinctions, but I guess they were both just ripping off the Chameleons. I never put 2 and 2 together.

First time I heard "High as you can go" I was blown away. Then I got the album. There was a period where I played the Chameleons almost non-stop.

I graduated from HS in 91, started community college locally, and found a college radio station --> that is where I first found the Muses (glad you finally did too)! I picked up the Sire "Just Say...", in this case "Just Say Yes", and found the Muses again. Shortly thereafter Belly was in full swing on MTV...I had the biggest crush on Tonya Donelly and to this day think she / her sister / that band are one of the more critical (& agreed underrated) pillars of modern indie.

I'm Serbian and I watched The Royle Family, loved it! (We get a lot of UK shows on TV) I love The Chameleons, such an underrated band. Second Skin is one of the best songs ever.

That comment is jokingly spot on about Interpol. Interpol is a great band as well. The Chameleons are simply superb.

The Real Ramona is a gem of an album. It never gets old. One song not mentioned here is the last song of the album, "2 Step". What an amazingly simple and beautiful song. Perfect ending. (I decided 30 years ago that I wanted this song played at my funeral... and have never changed my mind.)

I was lucky enough to see them live at the Moonlight club in West Hampstead in 1981 I think it was...the sheer power of them has stayed with me...I thought they were the best around and I went to a lot of gigs at that time. I wish I never gave away my copy of Jeopardy.

Used to go to a local Sunday night indie disco in the mid 80s and it was always fun watching peopke confidently dance to Up the Down Escalator, arms flailing then for those last few seconds if the song when thd tempo drops, just kind of shuffle awkwardly off the dance floor, Toweringly brilliant band.

I started listening to the Sound because my own band was compared regularly with The Sound. My band The Gentry was one of John Peels favorites Dutch bands in the mid eighties. I fully understand the comparison now. The voices are very similar. Check Fragments of truth (1984) and Solitary (1986).

You set me off on the best musical trip of my life. I started watching this video...maybe 2 years ago...as 'What Does Anything...' was probably my favourite album of the 80s. Utter genius. And now, having followed up on your references, I have discovered Ist Ist and The Slow Readers Club...two bands that demand about 70% of my precious Friday afternoon music sessions on ale. So genuine thanks for expanding my horizons in a direction I wanted to go...Funny (?) side issue. Alexa absolutely refuses to comprehend the term 'Ist Ist'. 'She' insists on playing music by 'First First'. :) Which is actually the same band (linguistically obviously) but makes you wonder about the nature of AI...

I discovered the MINUTEMEN in '93 when I bought "What Makes a Man Want To Start Fires" at Tower records in Tempe AZ because I recognized the Raymond Pettibon art on the cover. Low and Behold, they were unique and syncretic -- which is what I will always crave -- and I fell in love. I enjoyed all their older more raw and unique stuff, but was actually disappointed when I purchased Double Nickels on the Dime on vinyl.

BBC 6music did an afternoon show which had a feature called "Kings of the wild frontier". They played "Monkey land" and that was a game changer for me. I'd failed college and didn't know what to do next. Couple that with me starting to read the "His Dark Materials" books by Philip Pullman, and they both just seemed to sit happily together. Never been the same since.

Saw them in chicago years ago. The guitarist seemed drunk and was bitching at the security guards for some reason. Great show, but i thought maybe they're "difficult" to work with and that held them back?

Just as a side note: The bass in "The Fire" is one of the 10 best bass lines ever, especially for me as a (semi) musician. Incredibly intense and direct. The sound lives on, in every song, in every video, here on the internet and wherever...

Since this video was released 3 years ago, Mark Burgess has rejoined with Reg and has also brought on a great rhythm section to recreate the amazing Chameleons sound of old. Just saw them a few weeks ago and they were absolutely brilliant. At age 64, Burgess performs like the guy I saw in 1984 in New York. I've Loved this band ever since I brought home the peerless Statik Records compilation of Northern bands "Your Secret's Safe With Us" (also featuring Pulp.) An amazing band deserving of all of the adoration they receive.

Also, the 30,000 number remains more symbolic than factual for the VU & Nico debut. I believe i recalled Andy Warhol stating it was much more around the early 70's how much that record actually sold with his connections. It was probably closer to 200,000+ sold than it was 30,000.

Here is the exact reference for that brian eno source kristine mckenna, "brian eno: lots of aura, no airplay", the los angeles times, may 23, 1982 It's also worth noting that not only Andy Warhol connection, but Nico and Tom Wilson (a pretty known producer of that time) were promoting the album (he was also the producer and worked on it due to his nico connection) Heck, bowie was able to get his hands on it and if the album was truly as rare as reed stated it was, I don't think someone in England could get it so easily if it sold so little. Not to discount brian eno here, but I think he just took lou reeds word on it because why wouldn't he? And lastly, there are plenty of good condition original, peel-able pressings of that album which suggests if it was so rare back in the day you really wouldn't see so many of them existing today.

For music fans of the genre, they're pretty big. Thanks to the internet, and popular websites like RateYourMusic, they are just a couple of echelons below some of the big post punk contemporaries of their time i.e. Joy Division or even The Fall. Rather, what I should say is if you know Joy Division, you might not know The Chameleons but if you know The Fall, you definitely have heard of them. If that makes sense at all.

For influential "lost" post-punk bands I don't think anyone comes close to Whipping Boy, I mean that band is obviously the inspiration of Ireland's giants Fontaines DC but less known is the fact that they pretty much inspired all of Michigan Shoegaze.

I met Chameleons with the release of their first album. Since then, every new album that was released was a real shock for us, and it has been one of the main reference bands in my life. We saw them live at the Rockola concert hall in Madrid in the 80's. I don't exactly remember the year. The small concert hall was packed with people. I remember that my friend Edu and I didn't have enough money for the ticket, so we started begging at the door of the room until we got the money we needed. The sound of the concert was not very good, because the room did not have good acoustics, but the experience left its mark on us forever. I'm 59 and I still cry when I listen to some of their songs. I feel lucky to have been able to enjoy this little gem since then.
