Whilst music is universal, I suspect the popularity of so called classical music, lets call it complex music, in the 19th century was an aberration related to the rise of the middle class in the West. Earlier, sacred music was a bastion, but during the Baroque complex music was the preserve of connoiseseurs & I think we are returning to that baseline. But you tube helps our minority to connect.

You would think pulling off Grandfathers Theme in Peter & The Wolf on Trombone would be easy but that's why french horn does it

One thing - The Habsburg repertoire for trombone (baroque to classical) is not mentioned: Biber, Caldara, Fux, Vejvanovsky, Reutter etc

Glad to see that your London trip continued to include TWG guests from all parts of the classical music world. Interested to hear the results of her research, it could be informative, but I have felt fully engaged at “quiet” classical and other music genre concerts regardless of whether I could jump and shout or listen intently. I have also had the opposite sensation. It is hard to quantify no doubt, many parts have to come together and merge, the artist, the performance, the music and the audience, and when it works you can definitely feel it. You described the connection you felt with the audience at your London debut. A very human experience..

i wonder how well musicians/opera singers would perform these days if it was like long ago when people could walk around and talk and be as noisy as they want to be in the room or clap whenever they wished to

Such a fascinating conversation. I really like the idea of challenging the perceptions of what classical, or any music, 'should be'. I wish Ari well in her studies. I think Vivaldi had some good headbanging music... Tuxedo mosh pit anyone? 🎶😂

Musician and audience are 2 individuals being joined by music should work together as active(preform) & passive(percept) like in Chinese words 聲(voice)&音(sound). What Tao's book #2 says, "Voice and sound harmonize each other." So both agree with the music the performers pick is important?

I was 55 before I realized the purpose of practise was make real what I heard in my head. Before this I spent most of my time figuring out how to fake what I heard in my head. My teachers were not amused.

I wonder if Ari, in her PhD research is also considering the bond between the audience and the musician. If an audience member is there just to see the musician perform, and the music selected by the musician is secondary. Or is it more because the audience member likes the music, and the musician playing it is secondary. Or maybe because the audience member likes both the music, and the musician (most likely reason, I would think). 🤔

i don't have enough choice in concerts to be picky about performers or even pieces. if there's a concert i can afford, i'm going lol. but if i had choice i'd probably be more of a piece-person than a musician-person.
@rinardman
@rinardman 3 ай бұрын
@@oxoelfoxo I am the same in regard to lack of choice. I have zero choice, unless I travel for hours to get somewhere. If I did have a chance, I would be more of a musician-person, more a fan of the performer, the music would be secondary. Like with Tiffany. I want to see her perform in person, what she plays would be secondary.

This discussion reminds me of Leonard Bernsteins’s song “I hate music (but I like to sing)”. I like the version of the young Barbra Streisand.

I`m old and want now only streaming. Though, I have found it difficult to buy streams. All these different labels and platforms doing it differently. I guess the standards of how this will happen are still being worked out. (Unfortunately I was never able to buy in download or stream the Dvorak album. Offers to hear it or tracks of it free, but to buy? I never figured it out). Nice interview.

When you have payed like monthy fee for 10 years you could have bought lots of CDs for that sort of money..and you would own those for the rest of your life. Once you stop paying fee you are out! So it is rather stupid to pay for someone's else's library. It factually is irrational behavior. It is group behavior where everybody is imitation others because it is suppost to be modern and physical media is old fashioned. Ownership is power and renting is not!

It's disappointing to see that in the classical world the people commenting what you should have done differently with your video are as insufferable as are electric guitarists. How dare you not include everything in a seven and a half minute video. Anyway, well done.

I just received my first shipment from the Presto store a couple weeks ago, delivered all the way to the U.S.! I like to occasionally pick up those 'mega box sets'. The website is a better experience than Amazon as far as showing details of what's on the CDs, but I do have to start at Amazon to use their 'customers also bought' feature to find new recordings.

Thanks Tiffany, a very enjoyable discussion. For me personally though i feel a bit horrified at the idea of CD's disappearing at some point in the future, I'm a collector and I like to have physical copies with covers and artwork etc I like to see my music collection in one place and look over what i have. My hope is streaming and physical copes co-exist in some form always....I have a feeling this is what will happen :)

Trying to get at what Mr. Fung means when he is being critical of the cheap versions of mindfulness or art appreciation that he sees in our culture today. There is a way in which those experiences are marketed as an accessory to a person's existing lifestyle, something to be used for a particular benefit which the user can expect beforehand. In contrast, the experience of using art as a gateway to the sublime aspects of being human is different - the listener/viewer/user is immersed, challenged and often changed. That kind of experience is enriching and can add a lot of positive meaning to someone's life, but the person has to be open to it in order to experience that. Despite people knowing this in theory, and despite them seeking ways to experience real change like this, most consume art passively or on a surface level. The barrier of entry is thought of as the monetary cost instead of the cost of invested energy and time and of having to let go of previous notions/parts of the ego. Lots of consumers today want the easy fix, so they end up kind of floating from thing to thing hoping one day they'll find the thing that will pull them out of their slump. In my opinion, inspiration isn't enough - they need to have their butts kicked and be willing to face some kind of pressure to change.

Tiffany although feeling 'old' was sensitive and supportive without appearing as a 'mother superior' in this encouraging interview. Interesting to note in Music as in Engineering there are many 'qualifying rounds' before an interview for work or higher training is available.

Very pleasant to listen too this elder statesman and raconteur of music. I thought you defended your 'corner' well from the experienced comments made. An extrovert or introvert ? Tiffany the impenetrable introvert is perhaps the shielded persona while practicing the piano and the truly sociable, affectionate and happy Tiffany is really outward and extrovert ? I think you are higher than music alone ! Nice to hear Alfred Brendel mentioned, I have a wonderful CD of him playing Chopin Polonaises and Ballads. I had a search hoping you had recorded them.

Being given New music scores was a 'gift'. Having used professional Engineering drawings to build a system , the same appreciation from the 'workmen' wiring and connecting with the drawings (They included the original Manufacturer's bound drawings) I was able to discuss with them. In the same way with music the drawings were international with the new system connecting into German and other built systems. These old drawings have an illustriousness to them. The Warsaw museum displays some of Frederic Chopin's original Manuscript I understand. Tiffany's interview highlights the highly detailed and technical work behind Sheet Music. Many thanks to all of you.

Queen Elizabeth 1st visited Canterbury Cathedral, this would be interesting to hear about. Hampton court Palace with the associations to King Henry 8th has a chapel with Organ . The late Queen and Prince Philip showed a keen interest in the Organ at a celebratory anniversary service at Windsor Palace Royal chapel for the Royal college of Organists. Much scope for discussion ! Thanks for reminding us about the Victoria and Albert Museum !

Penetrating interview from Tiffany in this highly complex pursuit. Fascinating and skillfully made intelligible without becoming trivial with Tiffany not deriding this as an indulgent infringement of the high art of classical music. Fascinating thoughts on Artificial composition, the need for the highly intellectual, abstract and exacting engineering of synthesized sound is not required here with the sounds being 'mechanically' generated.
