100% on the face shield! Traditionally, bellows were also made using thin leather strips. In the clock, paper is probably better. I imagine that a drawing paper would also suit. Go look at Accordion repair since that's the same system they use. The thing about the gears is that it picks up dirt and that dirt, combined with the grease, acts as an abrasive paste and actually accelerates wear. Same problem with over oiling pivots. Don't want an excess of oil to suck dirt into the pivots and wear them out.

Maybe a short ultrasonic bath in an oil eater solution would have been good before you started taking the movement apart. 🤮 11:00 Also allows easier precise adjustment vs trying to move the bob screw and upsetting the position of the bob above it. 2 pts for that! 12:05 Also really cool! Another 2 pts for Griffendor! 😁 15:50 I'm looking at that and wondering it you can maybe think "tower of Hanoi" and push the center bits out vertically to be able to access more of the surface area. First one way, then the other. Won't be a complete job, but better than nothing. 24:30 Probably gravity. Betting someone sprayed oil inside and the chime was not wound for many an era and that's where the oil collected, on the lower side. 37:05 It's also a legitimate part of the clock's repair history. Personally, I'd be inclined to replace it, or at least file on it or something to try to clean it up, but as you say, if it works, it can stay.

If you mean, how did I figure out the actual beat rate, I used this app, play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nitzan.cuckoocalibration. It's just a clock calibration app. I had to input what the expected beat rate should be, and it will analyze the beat.

@@WatchOverhaulit’s where you take a lathe and put the wheel on it and it spins it at a fast speed then a sanding block would be added onto the end of the gear to remove serious groves and scoring so there’s no friction and for the American clocks due to their long gear stems/pinions you could use a drill
@CobesclocksАй бұрын
@@WatchOverhaulif there is a bit of scoring on the pinion and no serious grooves buff sticks/sand paper sticks can remove them too And for the American ratchets sometimes they get loose and jump the click spring when winding so it explodes so they can be tightened by finding the nail like thing that holds the ratchet in and use a center punch and a vice to hold it and tighten it not to where it’s too tight but to where there is no so much play
@1246pop2 ай бұрын
I always polish the plates, Clean the inside of the case, Polish the pinions, check and rebush, (I know you mentioned that) I never use water, unless there is an important reason. Your fold on the bellow does not allow it to compress, you may need to Skive it. So its weak on the Co. Hey man, I just found your channel and this video has been a real blast. I wanted to ask if you have any insight because I'm sure American clocks have roughly the same mechanisms, such as the striking hammer having three levers on its arbor. ive eug around and I cant find very much about this part specifically. So I found a Sessions movement in pieces and it came with the striking hammer outside the movement. When I put everything back together and allow it to strike, the hammer bounces a lot each time it strikes. In this Seth Thomas, the hammer has no recoil. Is one of the three levers on the hammer meant to counter this recoil or is that the job of the spring wire? If you can respond, I'd be very happy.

This is why if a supposed "clock maker" gives too low of a price to do a thorough svc. They're only gonna over oil pivots, not disassemble and potentially damage your clock. This profession takes expertise, tools and time to complete. First to diagnose,disassemble/ clean /rebush, if necessary. Then after assembly they have to let your clock run and make needed adjustments. A watchmaker clockmaker has to charge for all of this, unless they owe you a favor or something.
@WatchOverhaul3 ай бұрын
It takes a long time to do it right, and I'm just an amateur. A professional clock maker might be a little quicker, but you're also paying for the skills and expertise they have. Depending on the clock, the cost of service might be more than what the clock is worth in terms of monetary value, but sentimental value might matter more. Thanks for watching and commenting!

I have inherited a clock from my dad. He got it from his parents who got it from my great-grandparents. It’s a clock manufactured by Wm. L. Gilbert clock company. As far as I can tell in the research I’ve done, it was made around 1905. My dad talks about it and how he remembers how it chimed. He unfortunately has severe COPD. I wish I could have it repaired before he passes but it’s impossible to find any clock restoration business where I live. 😟

First working through the mechanicals to get it running long enough to uncover and understand its issues. I am unsure if the pendulum is original, which may be part of my problem. I have been unable to locate enough information to identify the clock. If you provide pointers in that area too, that would help. Great video! I learn as I do, similar to the spirit of this video.
