I was completely fascinated with this restoration. It is just possible, that given the time the clock was made, there could have been gas lamps in the house, fireplace, and tobacco smoking. All would have put a greasy residue in the air, and it would accumulate on the insides where it wouldn't be able to be cleaned easily. I really enjoyed watching this process. Please keep making videos.

I have owned two, s e t h Thomas, grandfather clocks. I would get many many compliments when people would come to visit me and they would ask all sorts of questions. I would demonstrate how, it worked, they've always complimented the sound. After my divorce like most men I ended up, holding the bag, but it was empty. Such is life. I enjoyed your post I will continue to follow you. Today is January 11th 2023

This was fantastic!! I had two wind up Big Ben bedside alarm clocks that would not wind. I had watched The Repair Shop and a man fixed a clock that was stuck with just old thick grease/oil. I did the same repair and they both work!! I do have a Seth Thomas that doesn’t keep good time…slow. I used the adjustment key, but it appears to be not attached in the back. I don’t dare do anything more! I only wind it at Christmas. This is a great show. I have learned even more!

I lived in Thomaston, Connecticut for 28 years. The clock factory is smack dab in the center of town, a large three story brick building. Sadly the Seth Thomas clock company is long gone, but the factory remains and has been repurposed into small businesses. I have a 1951 Seth Thomas Winchester chime mantle clock my grandparents gave my parents as a housewarming gift. It has the Northbury movement, the last movement Seth Thomas manufactured in house. I’ve had it rebuilt and serviced regularly. It runs and chimes beautifully and is my most precious family heirloom.

Excellent repair video. My sister gave me one of these clocks owned by her husband who got it from his grandfather many years ago. She couldn't stand the sound of the chime and bent things inside to stop it. I followed your repairs, replaced the pendelum spring, timed it with an Android clock calibration app and it is working great! Thank you for a fabulous video.

Haha! All she had to do was run out the striking spring.... Takes a while but about ten minutes of moving the minute hand back and forth with the hour hand at 12 to continuously force the longest chimes did the trick for me.

I was glued to the screen on this video. It was a genuine pleasure watching you work, as you dug into the bowels of this clock. Your even, soft-spoken narrative is a welcome change from the often shrill and overbearing audio on many YT videos. You show amazing skill in the intricacies of a clockwork. Thanks for a very enjoyable program.

Most of my life I stripped and rebuilt motor cycles, engines, gearboxes, electrical components. From very early ones to the much more complicated ones from Japan etc. With or without much information I managed over many years to rebuild successfull, it was my living, just about everything that was put in front of me. After five minutes of this video I knew that clock and watch repairs were beyond me, must take a lifetime to get that much skill and knowledge. I am in awe. Very interesting and well presented video, a treat to watch and listen, thankyou

Thanks! I bought an antique clock which ran well for a few days but then would make a big racket, then stop by the end of the day. I suspected the spring but when I tried to take it back to be fixed, he had gone out of business. I decided I would repair it myself but I needed to see a clock repaired. This was a great video and I feel conficent to do it myself now. I will order what I need. I was given a lovely wrist watch as a child and I could not resist opening it and dismantaling it, put it all back together once again! Mother had a heart attack upon seeing what I had done! LOL The spring in my antique clock is not properly attached so it givesway just as yours did. And its all filthy inside. A good cleaning and reattaching the spring properly will fix all that ails it!

Love the video! I would suggest a large ultrasonic cleaner filled with automotive carb cleaner. It is formulated to remove the type of buildup on the spring and is safe for copper and bronze. You could use it on all of the parts and save a tremendous amount of time hand scrubbing.

In my experience with mechanical things, I have found that I want to do my heavy cleaning and degreasing before I do my fine cleaning. Use your ultrasonic as the final clean. It will save you steps if you remove the heavy deposits first. That's my way. But clean is clean, however you do it. Great video. I enjoyed it.

Just came across your posting as I was caught by the words Seth Thomas. I have an old Seth Thomas railroad watch from my father. I live in Alberta Canada and I clean and sometimes restore old firearms. In my work life I was involved with electron microscopes which require ultra cleaning and be oil free. I now use my cleaning techniques from then to cleaning gun parts. Long ago we used Lemmi-Shine which is a dish washer additive plus a few drops of Dawn dish washer liquid. This is dependent on how much water you use. Experiments may be required. We heated the water as our ultra sonic cleaner has a built in heater, added about a table spoon of Limmi-Shine and a few drops of Dawn. Put the parts in a basket so they don't touch the bottom of the ultrasonic cleaner (a bad thing) and cook for about 20 minutes. It woks great for cleaning caked on grease and removing the staining on brass without using mechanical polishing or picks. I use a much larger ultrasonic cleaner than you -10L. If you are more interested in maintaining patina then you could use other grease solvent products like Gunk which is a carburetor cleaner/de-greaser in the ultrasonic cleaner.

Nice save. That's a lovely old clock. I've seen clocks and watches with that greasy dried film coating them before and I think it's WD40 or equivalent that people spray on the movement thinking they are doing the right thing. I actually saw a YT video of someone doing it to get an old movement running and people leaving comments about how it was a great idea. Of course they will run for a while until everything starts to dry up and get coated with dust.

Thanks! The clock I'm working on now is worse than this one. It almost looks like someone dipped the movement in used motor oil. It's alright though because it gives me an opportunity to try to make it right!

I would say this is the most detailed vid of taking down a clock i've seen. We've had a couple of clocks for a while. They were my wife's mothers family pieces. When she passed, we found them in the garage. Being a nerd, I took them. One is a sessions Westminster and the other is unknown. I attempted to clean up the unknown (and older) clock while in the case. Using some light gun oil, I was able to clean it a bit and actually had it running for about 30 minutes. You have given me the courage to pull the plates. If this goes well, the sessions will be next.

Heather, I got into this as well for a time at hobbyist level. Not going to lie, I bought a few clocks that were low value or at least low investment, ripped them apart, then reassembled them as best I could. Pretty much trial and error. Should you decide to work on your Seth Thomas I would highly recommend finding a few sacrificial clocks to practice on first. This video is an excellent learning tool. It's not going to turn you into an expert, but it teaches some basics very well.

I have a beautiful Seth Thomas mantle clock I inherited from my grandfather, it has been in the family for at least 4 generations. Unfortunately it needs significant work, but I can’t find anyone who will touch it here in Tasmania. On another note, it was rather fun bringing it here from Canada, in a carry-on hard-shelled suitcase, watching the faces of the airport security teams as it went through the XRay scanners. Loved watching this. In the East Bedroom on my Grandma's farm she had one of these Seth Thomas clocks but the columns were white marble, I slept in that room when I stayed on the farm and loved hearing it chime in the night.

For such a beautiful piece, one just has to take one's time. I disassembled, fixed and re-assembled some old clocks with my late father as a teenager, so this brings back a lot of lovely memories.

Hello, I stumbled across this video of yours on the Seth Thonas clock... I doubt know why but for some reason I am fascinated with watching watchmakers work. I Loe watching wrist watches, pocket watches and wall and grandfather clock being repaired and services.. Your voice over is wonderful and sorely absent on some watch repair channels. Keep up the good work. WONDERFUL Just in case you are wondering, I am watching your KZbin channel from my home here in Manila, Philippines..

First time watching your channel. My Late Grandma worked on clocks in her spare time and I love to tinker with the hands of time. Now when I clean I use rubbing alcohol it cut thew old oil and grease.on larger jobs break cleaner also works. Fun to watch you ,keep up the great work.

Some 15 years ago, I bought at auction a 1912 Gilbert mantel clock. When I gently started to wind the movement, you could hear the dirt inside. After removing the movement, I also removed the verge to let the main springs unwind. That was all the disassembly I performed. Placed the movement in a pan and sprayed some 4 cans of Brake Clean while sloshing the entire assembly. I used a soda straw to blow off the dirt and Brake Clean. After subjecting the movement for a while in the pan the clock began to run. It took a while to get the clock to "keep time" but it is still running today. P.S. very impressed with your presentation and homemade lathe. Thank you for sharing this

It's definitely fun to tinker with these old clocks and get them running again. Thanks for the compliment! It takes a lot of effort to work on these clocks, film it and try to make an interesting video but it's fun. Thanks for watching!

I used to try and fix these old clocks for years to no avail. After either failing to fix them or destroying them completely in the process I come to the conclusion I'm just not smart enough. I took the cases and made birdhouses out of them. Thanks for the Vids.

I'm back for the third time watching the assembly sequence. Thanks for actually taking the time to record and describe what you're doing. Most other videos transition from a couple of tubs of parts directly to a compete movement without showing how it goes together.

Enjoyed watching this video as it gave me "courage" to continue to repair a Seth Thomas mechanism identified only by 5 7/8 and 1/2 stamped on the front plate. I'm just learning the art of horology and have made mistakes, er, learning opportunities. I'll continue to search KZbin for more clock repair videos but have saved this video to file.

I found watching the tear down, cleaning and reassembly of the 1900 Seth Thomas clock extremely interesting. I have worked on heavy equipment for most of my life (eighty years old and semi-retired) and still working, but only on my own equipment. Time has taught me that the cleaning portion prior to the reassembly of any equipment is paramount and might I suggest that using a carburetor cleaner and or a break cleaner in conjunction with a de greaser purchased from an auto supply store will clean brass like new. Also, you can purchase brush on bluing from any gun store. G H Dengel
