Next up on the bench is an antique Seth Thomas Adamantine Mantel Clock made in 1900.
There were some big problems with this clock:
- The whole movement was drenched in oil trapping dirt and hair.
- The mainsprings were seeping oil and contained areas of hardened oil causing the springs to catch and not unwind smoothly.
- An escape wheel pivot hole was severely worn causing it to stick and not spin freely.
- The hammer leather tip was missing and was replaced with a screw.
I had to address a worn pivot hole and the springs, but I've never done that before so I had to learn quickly! Because I didn't want to spend hundreds of dollars on a clock mainspring winder, I decided to design and build my own. A mainspring winder is one of the best and safest ways to wind and unwind a mainspring to clean and lubricate.
In this video you'll see:
- How to remove a clock movement from a Seth Thomas mantle clock.
- How to disassemble and assemble a clock movement from a Seth Thomas mantle clock.
- How to wind and unwind loop-end clock mainsprings using a clock mainspring winder.
- How to clean and lubricate clock mainsprings.
- How to clean a clock movement from a Seth Thomas mantle clock.
- How to fix a worn clock pivot hole by hand.
- How to replace hammer leather tip material.
- How to calculate Beats per Minute (BPM) by counting wheel teeth and pinions.
CLOCK BACKGROUND:
This Seth Thomas clock belongs to my brother-in-law who received it from his grandparents. It's been in his family for a long time. On the bottom of the clock there is a stamped date code that says "0091", meaning the year 1900. The year is usually done in reverse and followed by a letter A - L representing the month. I couldn't find a letter so I don't know what month it was made.
This movement is stamped with "3 ⅝" which was used in Adamantine mantel clocks around the 1890s to about 1902. The movement has a recoil escapement located at the rear. This is the first type of movement used in Adamantine clocks, and was phased out and replaced with the No. 89 movement around 1900 - 1901.
Adamantine is a celluloid veneer which is glued to the wood case in different colors and patterns. Adamantine veneer was developed by the Celluloid Manufacturing Company of New York City. The Seth Thomas Clock Company purchased the right to use the Adamantine veneer in 1881.

I lived in Thomaston, Connecticut for 28 years. The clock factory is smack dab in the center of town, a large three story brick building. Sadly the Seth Thomas clock company is long gone, but the factory remains and has been repurposed into small businesses. I have a 1951 Seth Thomas Winchester chime mantle clock my grandparents gave my parents as a housewarming gift. It has the Northbury movement, the last movement Seth Thomas manufactured in house. I’ve had it rebuilt and serviced regularly. It runs and chimes beautifully and is my most precious family heirloom.

I have owned two, s e t h Thomas, grandfather clocks. I would get many many compliments when people would come to visit me and they would ask all sorts of questions. I would demonstrate how, it worked, they've always complimented the sound. After my divorce like most men I ended up, holding the bag, but it was empty. Such is life. I enjoyed your post I will continue to follow you. Today is January 11th 2023

I was completely fascinated with this restoration. It is just possible, that given the time the clock was made, there could have been gas lamps in the house, fireplace, and tobacco smoking. All would have put a greasy residue in the air, and it would accumulate on the insides where it wouldn't be able to be cleaned easily. I really enjoyed watching this process. Please keep making videos.

I was glued to the screen on this video. It was a genuine pleasure watching you work, as you dug into the bowels of this clock. Your even, soft-spoken narrative is a welcome change from the often shrill and overbearing audio on many YT videos. You show amazing skill in the intricacies of a clockwork. Thanks for a very enjoyable program.

Love the video! I would suggest a large ultrasonic cleaner filled with automotive carb cleaner. It is formulated to remove the type of buildup on the spring and is safe for copper and bronze. You could use it on all of the parts and save a tremendous amount of time hand scrubbing.

Excellent repair video. My sister gave me one of these clocks owned by her husband who got it from his grandfather many years ago. She couldn't stand the sound of the chime and bent things inside to stop it. I followed your repairs, replaced the pendelum spring, timed it with an Android clock calibration app and it is working great! Thank you for a fabulous video.

Haha! All she had to do was run out the striking spring.... Takes a while but about ten minutes of moving the minute hand back and forth with the hour hand at 12 to continuously force the longest chimes did the trick for me.

I own a Seth Thomas adamantine, aka Belmont. It has been in the family for a couple generations, and is like a member of the family. After not running for years, I recently had it restored. I love hearing the tik-tok, and the mellow chime at the hour and half-hour. A clock is a heart beat for any home. Highly recommend finding and having an old wind up clock in one's home.

In my experience with mechanical things, I have found that I want to do my heavy cleaning and degreasing before I do my fine cleaning. Use your ultrasonic as the final clean. It will save you steps if you remove the heavy deposits first. That's my way. But clean is clean, however you do it. Great video. I enjoyed it.

Just came across your posting as I was caught by the words Seth Thomas. I have an old Seth Thomas railroad watch from my father. I live in Alberta Canada and I clean and sometimes restore old firearms. In my work life I was involved with electron microscopes which require ultra cleaning and be oil free. I now use my cleaning techniques from then to cleaning gun parts. Long ago we used Lemmi-Shine which is a dish washer additive plus a few drops of Dawn dish washer liquid. This is dependent on how much water you use. Experiments may be required. We heated the water as our ultra sonic cleaner has a built in heater, added about a table spoon of Limmi-Shine and a few drops of Dawn. Put the parts in a basket so they don't touch the bottom of the ultrasonic cleaner (a bad thing) and cook for about 20 minutes. It woks great for cleaning caked on grease and removing the staining on brass without using mechanical polishing or picks. I use a much larger ultrasonic cleaner than you -10L. If you are more interested in maintaining patina then you could use other grease solvent products like Gunk which is a carburetor cleaner/de-greaser in the ultrasonic cleaner.

From very early ones to the much more complicated ones from Japan etc. With or without much information I managed over many years to rebuild successfull, it was my living, just about everything that was put in front of me. After five minutes of this video I knew that clock and watch repairs were beyond me, must take a lifetime to get that much skill and knowledge. I am in awe. Nice save. That's a lovely old clock. I've seen clocks and watches with that greasy dried film coating them before and I think it's WD40 or equivalent that people spray on the movement thinking they are doing the right thing. I actually saw a YT video of someone doing it to get an old movement running and people leaving comments about how it was a great idea. Of course they will run for a while until everything starts to dry up and get coated with dust.

Thanks! I bought an antique clock which ran well for a few days but then would make a big racket, then stop by the end of the day. I suspected the spring but when I tried to take it back to be fixed, he had gone out of business. I decided I would repair it myself but I needed to see a clock repaired. This was a great video and I feel conficent to do it myself now. I will order what I need. I was given a lovely wrist watch as a child and I could not resist opening it and dismantaling it, put it all back together once again! Mother had a heart attack upon seeing what I had done! LOL The spring in my antique clock is not properly attached so it givesway just as yours did. And its all filthy inside. A good cleaning and reattaching the spring properly will fix all that ails it!

Heather, I got into this as well for a time at hobbyist level. Not going to lie, I bought a few clocks that were low value or at least low investment, ripped them apart, then reassembled them as best I could. Pretty much trial and error. Should you decide to work on your Seth Thomas I would highly recommend finding a few sacrificial clocks to practice on first. This video is an excellent learning tool. It's not going to turn you into an expert, but it teaches some basics very well.

This was fantastic!! I had two wind up Big Ben bedside alarm clocks that would not wind. I had watched The Repair Shop and a man fixed a clock that was stuck with just old thick grease/oil. I did the same repair and they both work!! I do have a Seth Thomas that doesn’t keep good time…slow. I used the adjustment key, but it appears to be not attached in the back. I don’t dare do anything more! I only wind it at Christmas. This is a great show. I have learned even more!

Wow. Never thought I would find a clock repair video entertaining, but you have made it. Thank you. I have a beautiful Seth Thomas mantle clock I inherited from my grandfather, it has been in the family for at least 4 generations. Unfortunately it needs significant work, but I can’t find anyone who will touch it here in Tasmania. On another note, it was rather fun bringing it here from Canada, in a carry-on hard-shelled suitcase, watching the faces of the airport security teams as it went through the XRay scanners. You could see them looking VERY carefully for attached explosives 😜

Some 15 years ago, I bought at auction a 1912 Gilbert mantel clock. When I gently started to wind the movement, you could hear the dirt inside. After removing the movement, I also removed the verge to let the main springs unwind. That was all the disassembly I performed. Placed the movement in a pan and sprayed some 4 cans of Brake Clean while sloshing the entire assembly. I used a soda straw to blow off the dirt and Brake Clean. After subjecting the movement for a while in the pan the clock began to run. It took a while to get the clock to "keep time" but it is still running today. P.S. very impressed with your presentation and homemade lathe. Thank you for sharing this

You have to take your hat off to the people who made these intricate pieces of machinery, but also to the people like yourself who have to sit back and work out how they did it and replicate it to make them run with precision like the day they were made. Congrats.

It's often a good idea to replace retaining wires like the one through the shaft of the rate adjustment regardless of whether or not it breaks on removal. It isn't a special pin of historical conservational value, just some wire. Once bent and re-bent, it has a high probability of failure. While that particular one is not exactly critical (in fact, many aren't) there do exist ones that could cause real problems if they were to come undone in operation. There are minor parts in a clock which have little or no conservation value and may be positively necessary to replace for the mechanical preservation of more important components. Of course, like many things in clock repair, it's a case by case judgement. Or movement by movement if you prefer.
