What do you think about George Shuffler and James Alan Shelton saying always do cross picking Down down up?
@countryguitaronlineАй бұрын
If you do cross picking Down Down Up, it'll give you a slightly different sound than alternate picking. Both ways are totally acceptable and I don't think it would be good advice to say ALWAYS do Down Down Up. It all depends on what sound you're going for, your personal playing style, the speed of the song, etc. I would recommend mastering both ways and make that decision based on what you think is best for a certain situation.

I love lessons like this where, as a musician, you’re given a bunch of “templates” to use or modify at your will. Instead of forcing a scale to practice over and over until your fingers bleed. 10/10

I don’t know why, but I have always had a mental block with tab. Somehow, your video made it click. TAB always seems upside down and backwards for me. I would like to see something like this again. I am thinking, if you rotated the film 180°, the biggest string would be on the bottom, thus lining up the TAB. I would like to see the fingers move up and down the strings, as if it was my point of view looking down on my strings. I would try something like that myself, but I’m not probably a good enough player.
@countryguitaronline2 ай бұрын
I appreciate the feedback! Maybe I'll try that some time. Glad this helped make it click though! Yeah, not sure who thought of the format because it does seem counter intuitive. The way I think about it is… the tab is kind of displaying the angle of me looking down on my guitar neck as I’m playing.. just lean over the neck a bit and you can see the tab lines in the same orientation as they’re shown here - low E string on bottom, high E on top. Thanks for the note!

@ yeah I don’t think it’s widely known that the big strings on the bottom I know now

Could you make a lesson of the full cover of billy strings playing "aint nothin to me" while on the couch at a party (yknow the video) by Johnny winter? Also signing up for the CGO. Going from primarily playing rock n roll to learning bluegrass and country has definitely improved my playing and knowledge of theory tenfold.

Nice! Yeah, I was the same way when I got into country and bluegrass. Actually started with classic rock myself... bluegrass especially takes picking to the next level. I'll add that to the list of possible lessons. Thanks for the request! You can also request lessons in the CGO forum if you're ever interested in checking that out if you haven't already. Cheers! - Devin

Sorry! I should've included that in the beginning of the video. I'm sure you've figured it out already, but all you need to do is tune the low E string (6th string) down one step to the note D.

This was the first song I learned on guitar. My grandmother taught it to me when I was 7 back in 1987. That and Little Brown Jug. I wouldn't change being raised in a bluegrass family for anything. Hearing Wildwood Flower makes me remember sitting out on the porch at granny's watching the sun go down. All of us picking and singing well into the night. We had fiddle, banjo, mandolin, a couple guitars, and all of us singing. That's the heart of bluegrass that seems to be lost these days.

@@countryguitaronline I assume you've already heard the Doc Watson cover because you made this cool video, so I assume you're referring to checking out the original recording of "Tennessee Stud" by Jimmy Driftwood? Driftwood wrote that and "Battle of New Orleans."
