Overall, I'd say this is good, but you lean too heavy on "Just copy magic". One of the first steps should be deciding how "factions" are defined, how many the game will have, and how closely they'll interact. For example, While Magic has 5 [colors], Yugioh started out with 20 [Monster-Types] before the focus shifted to named archetypes. The current Digimon TCG does all three at the moment, though it's been building up to this. The number of factions will determine how many mechanics can to tied to each one. Also, while it's up to the person to decide if their game even uses a draft format, they will have to choose if and how different factions interact in the same deck. Some games will have factions that just dilute each other's resources, while other games might have factions that synergize really well

So in my htcg, i made three types of cards, the commons which you can put any amount of cards in your deck, the uniques, which are limited to 1 copy for deck, and the legendaries, which are op BUT you can activate it's effect ONLY IF it's the only legendary card on the Zone, that counts for your cards or the other players'. So are you tired of your oponent beating your with their OP legendary cards? Bring yours to the table to counter them and even activate the legendaries of yours!

Looking at the screenshot I was seeing "Green, Blue, Red, White, Black, Black." Not only is purple an actually r-word choice, but the dynamic of Color X being the enemy of TWO colours would get destroyed... which is one of the most foundational and poetic parts of MTG. That every force, has two forces controlling it.

How Gwent got mentioned without referring to the Provision system which actually addresses the Queen's problem is baffling. Dividing a card pool into factions only shifts the Queen's problem to which faction has the best cards; it can help if the best cards are properly distributed but why make OP cards in the first place?

I find Tech Cards (Answer Cards) to usually be a poor attempt at balancing. If they are all around useful PLUS shut down an otherwise op strategy, then they themselves become op. So instead they are weak against any other strategy, making them insanely swingy. If they face one type of deck, they rule, if not, they suck. That's only worthwhile if that one single deck type is used to a tiresome degree over all others. And if one deck types predominates like that you have lost variety and need something better than one clumsy patch.

My favorite strategy is find a good source of one resource and settle there and either directly on that resource's port, or close to it. It doesn't have to be a monopoly, but if you got 2 or 3 good sources of wood, yeah, the wood port is about the best thing you could have. And you can stay out of a lot of player disputes that way, you just trade with the bank. It keeps your resource card count low, too. Nothing worse than finally getting that last resource you need to make your next move, and that damn 7 gets rolled, and you have 8 cards! So much for that city upgrade.
@nrrork17 күн бұрын
A 2:1 trade still beats having to trade with the bank, though. Especially if it's a resource that's in abundance versus one that's scarce. I've had games where the wood and wheat were on like all 6s and 8s, and all the ore was on 3 or 12, etc. Ore is worth more on that board. And you know giving them the ore is essentially handing them a victory point, so what should you really be expecting in return? Not all resource cards have the same value, so 1:1 is not always a fair trade.

A house rule I use is for jail, instead of getting 1 role on your turn to get a double, we use all 3 roles in 1 turn then pay if we dont get it. That way it stops stalling for late and mid game, helps in early game, and is mostly used so you don't get your $200 for passing go amd having to go through the jail half again.

With the gen 4 change suggestion you gave for Purugly, I agree with the sentiment but I can't agree with the change you made. I feel that without the widesweeping ears, it actually makes the design feel uneven and ironically unfinished while still looking overly complicated, just now in the wrong areas. I feel like without the swooping ears it makes the design look way too bottom heavy. You'd think that would be a good thing but it just kind of looks still cluttered but in a more unbalanced way. I think if you kept the general shape language but without the purple finger look, it would be much better. I also think the shape of the origjnal ears mostly work because it goes in a similar swooping motion of the body but in the opposite direction.

I’m working on a tcg, and this problem has been in my mind sense I started. The idea of limitations of what cards you can use is great. I made a rule that you declare a type, and the monsters you use have to be of that type, except 5. Idk, I feel that is the best way to handle it, unless those five cards are extremely good.

In the old Cyberpunk 2077 TCG, the Runner Card Zane Red was an absolute unit that was a key part of every "High Noon" deck and nearly every other deck as well. was easily the most powerful runner in the game and could be bought at the very beginning of the game if you drew him, and then he wasn't even Legendary, so you could have 4 of him in your deck to boot.

I have said for many years that the Queen in chess needs to be nerfed, it is too OP and has dominated the meta for centuries. I would propose limiting how many squares it can move in one turn, as this would keep its original ability, but reduce it in power so that the Rook and Bishop still have a use

One thing I noticed about gen 9 is how many vehicle-based pokémon there are. From the box art legends to the varoom line and orthworm, shoot, I've heard someone compare dudunsparce to one of those carnival rides made to look like a dragon. I totally see it. I've heard it suggested that it looks as if the Pokémon Company was preparing to make a theme park. Honestly, I really like gen 9's roster, I'm largely drawn to fun designs, and gen 9 had some real doozies.

magic has in fact added a 6th color in colorless/devoid giving colorless cards a very specific identity and their own mana symbol and other experiments such as pherixian mana and snow mana act similarly tho are less developed at the moment
@Nefiron-v12 ай бұрын
Agreed. And the way they have flipped card effects to other colors, it doesn't really matter what color you choose anymore, because you can find the same effect in almost any of them. Adding a sixth would be a waste and just fluff.
@CharlesLeeRay812Ай бұрын
From the rules 105.4 If a player is asked to choose a color, they must choose one of the five colors. “Multicolored” is not a color. Neither is “colorless.”
@koboldqueen3055Ай бұрын
@@CharlesLeeRay812 a Changeable rule doesn't change the existence of cards made under a designer principal to treat them as a 6th color. Rules change how cards work changes the design principles behind cards only changes when those principles become widely adopted into evergreen set printing.

It is not a good idea to balance a TCG, LCG, CCG game nor board games in general! If you want to play a boring unenjoyable balanced game, go ahead and play chess! If you want a game to be exiting and fun, keep it unbalanced, and keep the random in it! I don't like board games with 0 random factor.
@jaschabull23653 ай бұрын
You may say gen 2 doesn't have a lot of common, repeating design trends, but I seem to remember going through the gen 2 dex and noticing just how many of them have black/dark colours around or near their eyes. All 3 legendaries at the end of the dex have them, and that's just the beginning. Though I guess that was just a precursor to gen 3, even if there, the range of colours is broader. The montage of side-by-side comparisons really made it really occur to me how contrary tyranitar is, as most of the gen 2 equivalents are much smoother and softer-looking than their gen 1 counterparts, but tyranitar looks like a kaiju, much like several gen 1 pokémon, whereas dragonite is all curves and cuddly shapes. I guess the pseudo-legends are kind of like those dots in the yin yang symbol when comparing the 2 gens, in a way. I never was that fond of ambipom, but looking back, it just hit on me that its nose was probably a reference to a snub-nosed monkey. Now that's got me wondering if there was a more appealing way to implement that sort of monkey's nose as a design principal. Though I could see why it wouldn't really work on ambipom, whose original form appears to be an exaggeration of a monkey's prehensile tail, which would apply to the likes of spider monkeys rather than an Asian species like the snub-nose. Though I suppose with Sinnoh's being the northernmost Japanese region, it would make sense to base the form introduced there on a snow monkey? More food for thought than I expected. I beg to differ regarding gen 5's version exclusives. They can be subtle, but I'd say the differences really tie into the versions' themes in a way that's never been matched in other gens. Reuniclus is in a bubble, basically in its own little world, kind of like an idealist that refuses to acknowledge any sort of bitter truths. Gothitelle, on the other hand, is a psychic seer which literally gets a vision of when you are going to die, basically being forced to behold a bitter truth of the world. I could go on. Also, I guess you never felt like waiting to catch something with sweet honey trees, considering combee and cherubi apparently completely evade your attention, regarding multiple-headed pokémon. The one theme you left out regarding gen 7 is alchemy, which is particularly apparent in the legendaries, with the box art legendaries incorporating the alchemic properties of the sun and moon into their designs, and magearna and type: null and silvally basically being alechemy experiments.

The only way for a card game to be balanced is to be a single set with no further expansions. Imagine a card game that is a single purchase and is a box of, say, 500 cards, and you can build whatever you want with them, just like a Cube in Magic the Gathering.

Based on what you said, i think this weird strategy could help your chances at this game: at the beginning of the game pick up your favourite string of numbers, f.e. your phone number and start playing according to your numbers modulo 3, in order, so that against experiences players you would be playing truly random and they cant trick you, you spend no energy thinking about the moves and can play some aggressive mind games like the one of playing scissors when oppo played two rocks in a row to win the game, like 52% of time?
