I noticed Coldplay seemed to be in a pattern since Mylo Xyloto, where every second record was moody and/or deeply emotional, and every other was full of radio pop tunes. This lead in a weird spiral where they made imo their best album with Everyday Life followed by imo one of the worst albums I’ve ever heard in Music of the Spheres. At first I was hopeful for a return to something great for the next album, however when it was announced as Moon Music my fears set in that it would be too similar to Spheres. And when I listened to it, I felt like it was what Spheres should have been. It was more refreshing musically, but it didn’t impact me at all as much as Everyday Life or even Mylo Xyloto. I’m intrigued that they will only make 2 more albums, I guess they’ve already got the concepts planned… I am hoping if they continue the pattern they will have one final pop album, then one final climatic culmination of everything they want to say and feel and develop instrumentally in their last record.

Every album since mylo has had a “ theme “. Moon musics theme is meant to be positive, or a way to say hey everything’s okay. It starts off with a negative track and as we progress till the end it gets positive. The point of the album is loving yourself. A lot of people seem to miss that connection. Just like music of the spheres was meant to bring people together “ everyone is an alien somewhere “ The last 2 albums have certainly reminded me of Pink Floyd. But I wouldn’t compare the 2. They are both of their own time. I hate to tell everyone this but it’s time to accept that Coldplay will continue to make the music to portray whatever theme they want to get across, not what the old fans want. They’re still unique and they’ve used hundreds of different genres from around the world ever since mylo. No album has ever been 1 genre, and never ever have they been “ rock “.

I love Moon Music. I think it’s one of their best albums in a long while. Much like yourself, I wasn’t too big on Music of the Spheres, but ironically I think Moon Music shines a light on Spheres. That album now seems much more complete and even better now that we have Moon Music alongside it. I view them almost as a single piece. Hoping and praying I can get tix to see them here in the states. But it’s almost impossible. 🌈

Great video! Here’s my honest take on it; I think the band has been constantly evolving, just not in ways fans (or let’s be honest here: the OG purists) expected them to be. I have been developing a newfound appreciation for their post-Viva La Vida records and I don’t know why but MOON MUSiC gives me this feeling of embracing their whole journey, especially after their first 4 records, there is kind of something Coldplay-esque for everybody, some people prefer the bursting color styles of Mylo Xyloto or A Head Full of Dreams, others prefer the slower paced, heartbroken Ghost Stories or the grounded more raw Everyday Life, others would like the most recent more pop-oriented Music of the Spheres. And sure, this is not saying that it’s all good, but I for one have been enjoying the journey going back, listening to the whole catalogue and now be more captivated by them doing what they want to do.

I agree with your point that Music of the Spheres (MOTS) does sound much more livelier compared to Moon Music. I think part of that was planned considering that their current tour has been going on for the past two years and is centered around MOTS, which would require much more lively/pop music for a concert. Moon Music does sound like a calmer sibling album that I personally enjoy. It's interesting to see what vibe they are planning to go with for their last album.

Been a big fan since 2000 - Everyday Life might be their very best album of all time. Moon Music is a close second favorite of mine. I love their OG material just as much as the rest of the world. But I’d be lying if I said their new stuff isn’t just as enjoyable, if not more so. I find their musical style absolutely shines when they lean into concepts (see MM, MX, and EL), creating a linear, almost movie-like experience. Additionally, when they add in varied genres and world music experiences (choirs, features, all the colors and genres on VLV and EL and MM, voice memos, speeches), it creates a beautiful, breathtaking experience. Parachutes and Rush got me into Coldplay. But it’s their experimentation and larger than life conceptualizing that has kept me - and made me - a lifelong fan. Moon Music is breathtakingly good.

Honestly, and my opinion could be biased, I think Coldplay has always been the biggest scapegoat for the musical market. Criticisms were done during basically every single album so if You really want to understand who they are You need to dive deep into their discography. I listened to moon music probably 7 times in a single day and I can't rest a day without listening to It. As a huge fan I have listened to every ep/LP/collection they could have published and none of them had ever felt so cohesive; it was the first ever Coldplay record that puzzled me. It's a 40-minute long song and I don't mean it in a bad way, a perfect blend of what Coldplay were and what Coldplay are. I don't think there was a better time to be a Coldplay fan: you can really see the guys having fun, doing what they love in the way they love, like it or not. Also, if you still haven't, listen to the full moon edition of moon music, it really contains some interesting bits.

@naomilii6142 ай бұрын
I think that not being blinded by nostalgia and letting it guide your criticisms is a very useful tool to be able to interface with their new music without inherent bias. This is coming from somebody whose first memory is their Live 2003 album being on the TV. I think Coldplay definitely has their fair share of "misses," but I rarely see justification for bashing all of their new work proportionally that goes beyond "they're not a rock band anymore and i dont like that because they were a rock band when I was young." Besides, many older fans find Viva to be more cohesive than their first two albums anyways, so this kinda proves that these things are extremely subjective and that saying a band is innately in an "awful" condition kinda shows a lack of ones accountability over their own tastes. Just my opinion though, feel free to disagree!
@rinderknorpelmuhle17902 ай бұрын
I think that's exactly what qualifies him. I was only born in 2001 and didn't even notice the first albums. I simply don't see this "albums used to be better" thing. I simply see Coldplay as a band that has always been mainstream but has always made it their own thing.Always fitting the right decade. It's somewhat paradoxical that many people expect a band that's older than 25 to always have the same sound.They tried out new sounds for as long as they felt comfortable with them. And the fan base has become incredibly diverse as a result. I think the current development is exactly the right thing.

@vincentturnersnotes2 ай бұрын
Thanks, I appreciate your thoughts. Hmm, the Apple music interview explained quite a lot- Coldplay's music has become a lot more outward facing, even since the Viva La Vida days, with Martin adopting a more extroverted persona within that. Understanding that the band really are playing to the crowd, and creating that shared experience helps me get into the right mindset listening to their later works. Along your last point, I'd love it if on the last album they could put the microscope back on themselves and create something more personal, having elements of it tie back to Parachutes. Of course I don't mean some kind of nostalgia sequel, but allowing themselves to call back to it in subtle ways, to bring an artistic coherence to the whole discography

@@vincentturnersnotes excellent observation. The instrumentation, chord progressions, lyrical content all come together very well. Stockport is actually very separate from Manchester. We have our own culture even our postal address still says Cheshire. The area they are filming this video in is a nice area and to be fair, there are more lovely areas than not. The area the lads went to school is opposite the town’s grammar school which Joan Bakewell and Fiona Bruce went to. Houses range from £250,000-£1.8m often back to back. Our road for example has this set up with the full range of three bed properties. Stockport has plenty of history when it comes to music, too. Strawberry Studios was home to 10cc and many stars have recorded there over the years from Cliff Richard, Take That and various “Madchester” artists. The judge that signed King Charles I death warrant; and the only judge in the country willing to do so, was John Bradshaw from Marple, Stockport. His hat was made with a hidden cage inside as armour and has been in display at the local hat museum as Stockport was the leading town for hat making. This is where we get the nickname Hatters for the Stockport County FC. The Mad Hatters Tea Party was based on the area; the mad hatter (workers went mad due to the fumes and chemicals used back then,) the Cheshire Cat, the giant teapot (Stockport was called the handle of the Cheshire teapot, if you look at an old map of Cheshire you’ll notice what is now called Wirral was the spout.) Our football team once had George Best as a player. Fred Perry the tennis player also came from Stockport. Stopfordians aren’t Mancunians and we’re very proud of our heritage. The Blossoms are absolute heroes here, even the welcome to Stockport signs now say “The new home of Gary” and others say “The blossoms.” The band chose their name from a well known pub called The Blossoms which still holds band and open mic nights. The band still live in the town and use it for their videos. Best thing….. they visited our son’s school!!!! It was a surprise!!! Played Charlemagne in assembly and then opened the new hobbit house library. It’s a fantastic town which is still home to Jason Manford, Phil Foden’s family, Kobbie Mainoo, Danny Miller from Emmerdale and of course the former hometown of Sarah Harding from Girls Aloud. There is a mural of remembrance for Sarah. Oh and the viaducts you see on The Blossoms second album and some artworks are the first thing you see when you arrive in the town. It is Europe’s and once the world’s biggest single brick construction. It’s beautiful in the eyes of all Stopfordians. Hope this helps! Enjoy Gary!!! 😊

Thank you for such a detailed overview of Stockport! It really does sound like a lovely town, and it's great to hear of Blossoms reverence to it- I knew of the Stockport connection, but didn't know they got their name from a pub, quite a cool story in fact! I appreciate how much they have given back to the town- indeed though there are other notable cases, it's not something you hear of often.
