The Last Dinner Party have seen a meteoritic rise to fame over the past couple of years, especially so around the release of their debut album "Prelude To Ecstasy" and debut single "Nothing Matters". In this video I delve into what may be the secret behind this sudden rise to fame, and dispel the notion that they are "Industry Plants"

they're insanely good and lovely people on top of that. they have the musical talent, the aesthetic and the performing skills to be huge. 2 or 3 days after glasto they came back to the george for a charity gig and i got to meet them there (i even gave them pins i made and they wore them on stage it was surreal). they were just the nicest humans ever and they actually felt genuinely kind and sweet. the gig is on youtube and it looks like a bunch of friends having fun (because it's what they are)

I've KZbin comment argued with trolls about The Last Dinner Party a whole lot. They have no proof of anything but, "There are other bands out there doing it longer that didn't get this shot." Which is true, but as you said, it's part luck and part design. They got a really good look going. But mostly it's that Nothing Matters is SO GOOD. I played it for my friend in December and watched his brain blow up, Spotify sent him his year in review in January and Nothing Matters was his top song. They released at least two more good solid songs. That's great because there are a lot of artists that I only like one song, ever, or one song per album. They're great musicians who wrote an amazing song. That's what got them famous. I hope they keep giving us bangers for years to come.

Exactly that, it took me a long time to learn this, but there is no point being bitter about someone else's success, instead look at it closely and see if there is anything you can learn!

I am a cynical, almost 60 year old musician. I saw many of the greatest bands live as a teenager. The Last Dinner Party are the real thing - as you say, they have a fantastic look AND great songs but the songs pulled me in first. The new song they are playing tells us this is not a one off!

Good analysis, Vincent. I'm witnessing the rise to fame of a new band here in Auckland, New Zealand, and the pathway is similar. One thing you forgot to mention: The band has to know who their audience is, and what they like to hear, then write good music that meets their criteria.

Personally I think their album is the best thing I have heard for decades. It is a masterpiece. These girls are ridiculously talented and are slaying it. They should be the biggest band in the world if there is any justice

Industry Plants are needed. Back in the day, the record labels took talent and paid for them to make a record and tour. Nowadays that is more or less unheard of with new indie artists. We need more of record labels boosting artists.

Mm, there's a video from 'Justin Hawkins Rides Again' (I think it's reacting to this band actually) where he says "surely it's a good thing when records labels invest in an artist and push them to do well?".

Subscribed. This was a well thought out and considered take. As you say: bottom line is - they’ve got bloody songs and the musical chops. Personally, I love them and I’m in 50s. I love a lot of music. I know a lot of music. I’m a musician myself. They have my vote and I think their debut is terrific!

These days, only those from a well off background can give their all to artistic pursuits. This kind of makes them all nepo babies in a round about way. In a lot of ways that has always been somewhat true. However, talent, a large dollop of luck and a dash of that elusive 'X' factor, always wins out in the end. When they are dropping album no#4 and it is still finding a large audience, this "argh they're industry plants" will all seem irrelevant. Also True industry plants chase obvious trends... these girls are not exactly doing that are they. They are defiantly influenced by the more arty, alternative end of musical artists, the kind that might (emphasis might) make a living at this, but will rarely make a lot of people rich.

For full clarity: I don't like their music, I simply find it a bit dull. I think multiple things can be true at the same time: both that they come from wealthy backgrounds which makes it easier for them to get into music AND that they play songs that other people enjoy and find engaging. The first point is more of a issue with the music/arts industry as a whole, it just is so much harder to break into music (which doesn't pay well) if you have to break your back paying your bills.
