Steady income is quite important. I've told people that income is like oxygen. When you have it, you don't care. When you don't, that's all you can think about! Have you been able to set yourself with some anchor clients? Or some repeatable projects? That could help stabilize freelance income.

@FOCUSinspiredКүн бұрын
That's a great point @DimmyV! Easier said than done. A good consideration is to ask yourself if that thought about what that other person thinks helps you and serves you? Sometimes it does. There are certain people's opinions that matter. Another useful consideration is whether your opinion matters more or theirs? When you can make your opinion the most important one, then you start winning! You can still consider the other person's opinion afterwards!

I recently found myself in a tough spot after getting laid off about a month ago. But I hustled hard and managed to snag a job within just 3.5 weeks, and get this-it's with one of the top 200 companies in the world! Here's how I did it, alongside the usual online applications (I'm based in Melbourne Australia). I was no stranger to rejection-I must've applied to over 480 jobs. But I knew I had to do more than just submit resumes online. So, every day from Monday to Friday, I hit the pavement, knocking on doors at 8 to 12 companies. Of course, there's an art to it. Mondays, though? I learned the hard way not to bother anyone before 10:30 am. They're either in meetings or gearing up for the week. From 10:30 to 11:45 am, though, that's prime time for morning visits. Lunchtime? A no-go zone from 12 to 2 pm. People gotta eat, right? Afternoons pick up again from 2:30 to 4:30 pm-people are more receptive when they're not rushing to head home. Tuesdays to Thursdays? Pretty much the same deal: mornings from 9:30 to 11:30 am and afternoons from 2:30 to 4:30 pm. I found people are generally more open to chats during these times. Fridays, though, folks are itching to start their weekend early. After 4 pm, it's best not to bother them-they're mentally checked out. It took some trial and error, but this strategy paid off big time. Meeting people face-to-face, showing my enthusiasm, and being respectful of their time-it made all the difference. So, if you find yourself job hunting, don't underestimate the power of pounding the pavement. You might just land your dream job like I did!

Wow, this is so toxic for so many neurodivergent people. Or in other words: you're saying, the job market is exclusively for neunormatives. Wow. Also: what do you do when there is only generic roles in your field, because companies just look for people to collect, but don't exactly know what they need the people for? :-)
@FOCUSinspiredАй бұрын
Interesting @christianibendorf9086 Which part would you say is toxic for neurodivergent people? I feel the suggestions could be leveraged for neurodivergent and neuronormative people alike. Also, it would be great to understand in what context "when there are only generic roles in your field" would be as well. Do you mean that there are only generic roles listed on a job board? Or something else? And yes, unfortunately in this market, some companies are "collecting people". I've seen some companies that have "future opportunity" job postings, which on one hand, I can see the value. But on the other hand, should have a bit more transparency when it comes to timing.

"If you're not smiling: MINUS ONE!. If you're not giving 50-80% eye contact: MINUS ONE! If I can't see your hands or there's no enthusiasm in your delivery: MINUS ONE! …" For example, some people won't improve their interview performance by forcing themselves to stare at the other person. Others are basically incapable of a "normal" smile. Some have a hard time focusing and prioritizing when speaking. Too bad those are just 5-out-of-ten-10 "garbage" no matter how experienced, educated, productive, innovative… they may be in other fields. They lose because they have a weird smile and are bad at talking … 😐
@FOCUSinspiredАй бұрын
@@christianibendorf9086 gotcha! Lots of valid points. It does point to the mine and the unconscious biases for many interviewers. Thanks for the lesson and bringing these to my attention! 🙏 All of your points could be incorporated into training as accommodations for neurodivergent candidates (maybe a future video?). Out of curiosity, would any of the -1 points be valid from your perspective for a neurodivergent candidate? Perhaps for the 5 marks for content: did you answer the question, relevant to role, example, story, human elements? What other suggestions would you have for interviewers to look out for to accommodate neurodivergent candidates?

Good question. If you're referring to the rest of the career coaches out there, there's a lot of overlap, and am similar to many. If I had to pick a few things that makes me different, I would say: 1. Lived experience: I worked in industry, worked as a recruiter and a hiring manager (many career coaches just share their academic knowledge of job search/career, or experience as a recruiter, or experience leading times - I'm at the intersection of all of that which puts me in a small subset of career coaches) 2. Thirst for knowledge and focus on first principles: I don't consider myself an expert in anything and say I'm a forever student, learning to get better. I focus on why things are the way they are so that folks can make the right decisions. One name I give myself is a "DJ for personal development" where I "remix" what's out there to see if that resonates. 3. Care: I would love for everyone on the planet to reach their potential. I'm starting with the ones that want to be helped. Sorry for the long response. I'm sure that will change over time as well.

I’d rather talk to a human. It’s annoying when you call up a company and have to press 1 2 3 etc just to speak to someone. Ai is good for certain areas but end of the day human interaction can’t be replaced. Also how does this impact socialising. Talking to a robot isn’t the same as talking to a human.
@FOCUSinspired2 ай бұрын
Same here @DimmyV Though I'm wondering what happens when AI becomes so good that you can't tell the difference? Especially in the context of a customer service call: What if you didn't know the voice on the other end was AI generated or not? As long as it got you what you wanted, would it matter?
