agree with so much of this. I hand make my items and etsy mistakenly took them down as a drop shipping product. yet there's hundreds of actual drop shippers that get no push back. it's ridiculous.

Unfortunately, this is part of a much larger systemic problem. Under our current global economic system, the profit line of any company - _especially_ a publicly traded one - is _obligated_ to go up or the company will go under. This is what leads to corner cutting, appealing to advertisers and a steadily worsening product over time. AKA Enshittification. This is as true for Etsy as it is for Facebook, Microsoft or H&M. It's why climate change has only ever escalated since we became aware of it. Line must go up, at any cost. It's all broken, down to the very foundation. We need to work towards much more fundamental societal change if we want this pattern of enshittification to reverse.

IPO. Be wary of any company when it hits IPO/public trading. The usual timeframe is 5-7 years (or less) before they complete their about-face and start SHOWING that they value shareholders above anyone else (employees, partners, customers, etc). I've consulted with many startups through IPO phase and EVERY SINGLE ONE was completely ruined in that timeframe (or less). Etsy's IPO was 2015, IMHO they started being more shareholder-centric in 2019, after they launched their "stockholder engagement program" in 2018.

Etsy's stupid, because it's cheaper to go to aliexpress. People aren't shopping Etsy to find the lowest price. They're alienating everyone for short turn greed

I've been on Etsy since 2012 also. It was my full time job for a few years. It's the reasons you cited that caused me to decide to let all my remaining listings expire. The last straw was their AI bot taking down one of my listings claiming it's not handmade. Oh, the irony! It's an embroidered felt flamingo mask, something I've sold many of on Etsy for several years along with other animal masks. And of course they did it the month before Halloween. I deleted the rest of the mask listings and gave my inventory away. Then they had the balls to send me a survey which is "confidential." I'm sure no human read that either. Keeping commerce human requires that a human being available to support your human sellers!

This stuff just makes me sad, I am EXTREMELY allergic to metals to the point titanium plated (anodized) doesn't cut it, I NEED things made of solid titanium. I got some jewelry from Etsy because quite literally nowhere else was selling the jewelry I was looking for. Not even 4 months later the shop I got it from was removed. So now if I want to get more of their pieces I can't and it's so frustrating. Real stores are suffering and Etsy doesn't care, and for certain types of jewelry you have no other option but hoping someone does it on Etsy and usually, there is someone who does make it. But now if I look it's all people lying about their pieces being solid (they're all plated) or it doesn't have a store for it anymore.

Its absolutely heartbreaking and frustrating how difficult it is to find an actually user-made account on etsy. I always start there when I’m looking for something specific (like a hair stick or a present for a friend recently) but I had to sort through *so many* dropshipping accounts before I could find a handful of user-made goods. I shouldn’t have to check their reviews just to see *thousands* or tens of thousands of reviews for a shop with almost no information and the same shit as most of the shops on the same page. It’s exhausting and I cannot imagine the stress it’s been causing the selling artists and crafters.

I've only used Etsy as a buyer and what I hate about it is the search is absolutely terrible. No matter what I search for gets over 1,000 results and inevitably, fewer than 100 items match what I searched for. And if I add more qualifiers to try to narrow it down, that actually increases the number of results! Plus for every actual item there are 100 listings for an electronic pattern to download to make that item. Like if I'm searching for Nordic snowflake mittens, I'll get some listings for actual mittens (most of which are not Nordic or snowflake), but all sorts of electronic pattern downloads to make Nordic mittens. Searching for anytihng is frustrating and overwhelming and I often give up before I find it.

I actually got a petticoat from a dropshipper on etsy, and I know it was a dropshipper because they sent me the EXACT same petticoat I got from amazon I was trying to replace. I left the person a bad review, and they had the GALL to DM me and basically offered to refund me to give them a better review. I refused obviously, but the fact they know all they have to do is play the algorithm is disheartening to know finding actual craftsmen is that much harder. If you see it, say it - call out dropshippers everytime, they don't deserve easy marks.

I made a blanket for my son from I am guessing the Lion Brand fur yarn. Some of my adventures in yarn have been him liking a yarn, (and he just wants the skein,) but I look at it as 'what can I make with that.' My son has a fur blanket that is heavy but so soft. I had a bit of trouble knitting the blanket, (it's striped,) and I forgot how many rows I was doing of each color, (just blue and white.) I can tell but not many others can. You could make a furry boa for your daughter(s). I think you said you have a daughter.?

As a creator who was sick of sites like T-Spring and wanted a merch shop, I moved my shop onto Etsy simply because there wasn't an affordable alternative that I could find which also allowed usage with an alternate platform like Printful or Printify. I made my own designs (no generated slop), but I wasn't printing the design onto products or doing the shipping since doing that with a focus on video creation and only a few thousand social media followers makes very little sense. An alternative finally came about that was more affordable than Etsy (0 dollars upfront and can stay published indefinitely), but the cost was that nobody came over to the new shop. I quit. Hung it up. After moving to a new platform with my merch, I though about offering local art and/or photography through Etsy, but then I realized Etsy's site isn't even built for that! I physically can't offer truly custom products through Etsy without BS-ing the back-end of the listings, and as far as I have seen and understand, local by-hand delivery is a pain in the rear with Etsy's system. It's like Etsy is trying to serve both sides of the aisle (actual custom stuff and drop shippers) and fails miserably at both. But it happens to do slightly better at serving drop shipping and stuff like that, so it rules the platform apparently. It's sad that Fiverr or Upwork can offer better systems for custom, hand-made stuff, and those sites are questionable since so many of the people on those platforms don't necessarily have a decent quality standard. At times, it certainly seems like there's almost no winning with these online marketplace platforms. All great ideas on paper, but they seem to fall apart in reality.
