I’m a few years late to the party, but there are a few concerns with this open loop system. #1 being that if you don’t keep the water got enough 130 -140F, there is a chance of dangerous bacteria growing. This wouldn’t be a problem if you were only heating, but where you are using this for washing, it could end badly. I’d be shocked if no one else brought this up, but I didn’t see it, while scanning the comments. I have a tankless system hearing my garage, and I love it. It’s about 13 years old now.
@reidallaway5 күн бұрын
@@JoelArseneaultKZbin this did come up in earlier comments and I had done my homework before designing and assembling the system. I have the water heater set to 55C and couldn't find any references to dangers of such a system other than Legionella, which should be thoroughly killed by such temps, especially since the tank is massively oversized for heating loads, resulting in long latency in the hot zones of the tank. If you have information or experience to the contrary I'd love to know as I have no desire to put anyone's health in danger.

Great work! Inspiring. Hmmm... Now I wish I hadn't gone out & spent 600 bucks buying a replacement ICE for my ride-on mower! Since I haven't installed it yet, perhaps I should re-purpose it to power a backup generator for my solar power system, since running a generator with an electric motor wouldn't make sense (unless you believe all those fake 'free electricity generator' videos!) 😀 Cheers from Aus.

I thought you was trying to achieve SolarPunk (my future dream) then I saw the same type of destructive farming that is the bane of this Biodome, monoculture. Robots should be used to reduce labour, especially in pest and maintenance. Regenerate lazy gardening (permaculture) that replicates the biodiversity of the Earth is only way to naturally farm. Monocrops kill the life in the Soil. Please also remember that Batteries ARE toxic to the Earth. Flame weeding? Why are you weeding? Weeds indicate Soil issues. Weeds is nature's way of fixing issues. A step in the right direction for reducing labour, missed the mark on keeping the Soil alive. Using a farm animal to fertilise the farm at the same time to work it is more Earth friendly than Solar panels, batteries and monoculture. Modern Agrarian (Solarpunk) is the future, it can heal the Earth and heal us too.

Thanks for sharing your innovations and I love that you work very collaboratively on your builds. Is anyone else out there interested in forming an electrification farm group in Lancaster, PA? Also, what is BOB? Was it always electric or was it a conversion?
@reidallawayАй бұрын
Bob was a battery electric vehicle from the outset. He's a model B2-48 burden carrier from manufacturer Taylor Dunn, built around 1985, using proven technology of that era. I upgraded the battery, motor controller and all the control and power wiring to more modern standards, using lithium batteries and moving from 36V to 48V but the original drive motor still propels it. The switch to lithium saved so much weight that I had to fill the old battery tray at the rear end of the vehicle with ballast to improve traction! Our other cart, Bobette, is a similar machine from Motrec, a manufacturer of such vehicles here in Quebec. There have been thousands or tens of thousands of these carts built since the 1970s, most of them battery-electric, but you need to find industrial auctioneers or get lucky on local classified ads and have one turn up.
@HSH-go-evАй бұрын

Outstanding Craftsmanship. The BBS02 and BBSHD motors from Bafang could be of interest for driving those single axis tractors. They have max 130 rpm / 160Nm at the output shaft at 48V and can accept a 32T chain wheel which would be optimal for the desired speed and torque requirements. That would translate to roughly 250Nm or torque on each wheel with a 52T chain wheel. Those Bafang units seem to be quite reliable (i use them almost every day since 10 years) and have the 48V motor controller included

Great inspirational video. On my homestead, I chose a cordless tool battery platform: The Ryobi 40v and the Milwaukee 12v m12 platform. I ofcourse have so many tools for those two platforms, including a cordless tiller and post hole digger. But most importantly, these batteries are used in a most optimized fashion. I made several solar portable solar generators using these Cordless batteries with aftermarket battery adaptors. It works really well for us. They are all solar charged, and I bought many cordless batteries.

Are electric vehicles truly zero emission?
@reidallawayАй бұрын
no of course not. A wooden canoe that you make entirely with hand tools while gathering your own food and defecating in a hole might be a "real" zero emissions vehicle, but the process is not for everyone. Virtually everything else has a huge footprint from manufacturing through to eventual disposal and recycling.
@chriskimber7179Ай бұрын
Who said zero emissions? Tilting at windmills does not produce better farming tools
@reidallawayАй бұрын
@@chriskimber7179 In fairness to commenter, several of my converted tractors do wear stickers reading, "Zero Emissions Electric Vehicle" but given that they're made from vintage equipment that would otherwise be scrap and their motors were salvaged and their batteries came from wrecked Chevy Volts and I recharge them on a grid that's 99.9% hydroelectric I felt like it was a rasonable claim to get people's attention and celebrate the achievement. Surely not pure enough for some but I do actually like getting things done.

Electrification is a great thing, but what that depends on is it impoweribg sustainable farming practices in relation to biodiversity collapse?
@reidallawayАй бұрын
I don't think I understand the question. Struggling to fight ecosystem collapse is definitely the higher priority than simply converting machines to electric for the sake of curiosity. My feeling is that there are huge numbers of farmers who are actively striving for more diversified farming systems that foster greater biodiversity and ecosystem health but that we are less well-served with tools to assist us in our work than farms that have adopted monocultures and more destructive practices. Smaller more diversified farms are a crucial part of the fabric of a sustainable future for humanity but we can't get there if there isn't enough labour to do everything manually or appropriate and efficient small tools to replace the labour that this kind of farming once depended on. I hope my answer makes sense but perhaps I'm not getting the question right.
