My moment of awe is what happens every time I watch WWII-related episodes and that is I’m in awe at how little time had passed between WWII and when this episode came out. It came out just 14 years after the end of the war. The attacks referred to as 9/11 was 23 years ago and Oklahoma City bombing was 29 years ago. I always liked history and always wanted to be part of history. Or maybe it would be more accurate to say I wanted to witness history. When I was younger, WWII was ancient history and 1959/60 seemed like the prelude to my birth. But now the time between 1945 or 1941 and when I could start remembering things, around 1971, seems to not be that long and that I have seen a lot in my life.

@@RobAGabor My goodness-it’s been 23 years since 9/11. I remember being a kid and adults telling me that time will go by more quickly when you get older. It does feel that way sometimes. Have you had a chance to read “First Squad, First Platoon” yet? Serling wrote it at about 21 or 22 years old while at Antioch College. Even at that young age, you can hear what will become his signature cadence of writing and speaking. To have that level of clarity at 21/2 is pretty amazing. I most certainly did not.

I remember feeling so uneasy when she picked up the sailor. The way he looked at her and how he behaved instantly scared me and I was so confused that she didn't want to let him go. I think she was terrified to be alone and felt more safe with him but your interpretation of the situation is very interesting as well! Great video as always. :)

It is actually kinda' fun--in an odd way. It creates this distortion in the audio of the episode that is unique, to say the least. It's right up there with June Foray's dubbing of the girl's voice in "The Bewitchin' Pool" and hearing Jack Warden in "The Lonely" say, "robutt." There's something about these moments that just break the fourth wall. 😆

As someone who did more than my share of hitchhiking all over the US, I can anecdotally report that a major shift happened in the last couple of decades. Now, it was never a wonderful way to get around. But when I started traveling in the early 2000s, it was quite doable it just required a degree of patience. Sometimes I'd get lucky and get rides right away. Usually it would take about an hour or two. But then I tried it again several times about a decade later, and it was a whole different story. Suddenly your odds of getting picked up *at all* were quite bad. It's become something not even worth trying anymore. I'm not sure what was responsible for this change, but I've talked to plenty of other travelers with similar experiences.

I find it hard to be too critical of Henry Bemis, because the premise of this episode is that it is a dystopia. If society ever loses its way so much that I was ridiculed for reading, I wouldn't want anything to do with anyone either. And what happens? Society destroys itself, and he was serendipitously saved only because of his isolation.

These episodes actually make me incredibly angry because I think they helped plant the seed in people's minds for desiring artificial companionship, and I believe this to be misguided and even delusional. As far as I'm concerned we might as well be talking about time travel, because in my opinion, we are so terribly far away from the development of human-level AI that society is likely to tear itself apart before we will get anywhere close. But... this won't stop companies from exploiting this misguided desire for profit, and we have this situation that we see now - fake AI being shoved into every tech product, making the experience worse, wasting resources, and setting the stage for continually fueling this obsession. All because people see episodes like this one and get the wrong idea, that this is something that is a) possible; and b) a good idea. When if anything, we should have taken away the opposite message, and interpreted it as a warning! We weren't supposed to take it as something that could ever happen, because it's a science fiction story, inviting us to temporarily suspend our disbelief in order to consider something new. So in this story, we are to assume that the robot *is* a person. And at the end, we witness a murder. After this, the victim's partner acts in such a way that I think ruins the story, because if all this is true, that she is a woman, has emotions, and feels pain, and they are in love, it shouldn't make any difference whether the inside of her head is wires and components or blood, fat, nerves and connective tissue. I think the episode betrays itself here by making him react so unnaturally. Allenby is the one who should be staying on the asteroid in my opinion, either as a prisoner, or a corpse. That would be, in my mind, the only satisfying ending.

It's interesting that TZ took a well known campfire tale and radio drama, and made it into this episode. The Grim Reeper taking the form of a slight, ordinary fellow was an interesting choice. By the climax of the episode we're totally aware of what's really happening. This one is a favorite of mine because of its ominous vibe and air of mystery. Creepy stuff.

I really like this episode. We went over it a few months ago on a Twitter watch marathon. I felt the camera angles were unique, and I noticed the artwork was strange! It's great to know that the TZ Companion also mentions it, and it was the director's intention. All your research on the atomic and neutron bomb articles is excellent. Every generation has something to fear, but I feel that fear has continued to linger to this day ever since the creation of these bombs. I understand your feelings about walking into war vs. being pulled into one. When you read comments online, they are very sad - people waiting for the 'bomb to drop' or wishing for the meteor or comet to strike the Earth. It is a general feeling of hopelessness, especially with how the internet lifts the veil of who is pulling strings. As you mentioned, all we can do is make those positive changes and live good lives.

Did you ever think of the irony of deserts and droughts on a planet that is over 90 percent made of water? The thought water can be scarce when there is more of it than there is minerals, at least beyond the molten magma.

Wonderful episode. I learned a lot about Greek Mythology. I would’ve never tied that to this episode, but your analysis made perfect sense. I thought that Nan had accidentally killed the hitchhiker when her tire blew out. So, this inextricably ties them together, and the hitchhiker is endeavoring to make her see that she is also dead and must pay for it. But those facts are not discussed in the episode, and I am sure they would’ve been alluded to.

You know what, I never even thought about it that way. I actually really like that reading of the episode. It would make the parts where she tries to hit him with the sailor in the car a yearning to hit him, something she is driven to do. I like it.
